まずはジャズ「You look good to me」を試聴。
THE Raconters「Consolers Of The Lonely」を聴いてみると、Special Editionの魅力がよくわかる。

If using IEM for playing in a band, would suggest to get an extension separately.
Breathtaking sound, they work really well with the new Shure bluetooth cable!

Spoke too soon. Amazing sound but fatally flawed when using with an iOS device. Because they are so low impedance the lowest volume setting is quite loud and there's no way to tune it so they can be played quietly. I didn't notice at first but it's rather annoying so I will be returning them.
Disappointed but oh well :(

I have put my rating back up to 5 stars as it turns out there is an easy solution to the volume issue. In iTunes you can right click on a song, go to Info -> Options and adjust the volume down a bit. You can even do this for all songs at once by selecting them all first. Then sync to your iOS device and bang, problem solved!
Since this is an easy solution to the volume issue I don't think I can fault these anymore - and the fact that they take so little power to drive means battery life in the source device should be theoretically longer.
First though, what the 535LTD-J comes with isn't exactly what is pictured in Shure's Amazon ad, although I didn't purchase them from Shure; I purchased them from PIVA (whoever they are). I don't believe for a minute that they are 'Authorized Reseller', but I really don't care. The item was listed under the 'Used and New' listings as being 'New' and for only $295. The box and everything in it appeared to me to be brand new when I got it. It was still shrink-wrapped in plastic and the 'seal' hadn't been cut. Looked brand new to me. On the back of the box there's a picture of a yellow foam sleeve and a grayish/white triple-flange sleeve, although they were NOT in the box. No biggy. I have TONS of tips laying around.
On the surface, I suspected my 535LTD-J might be a 'Chinese ripoff' (a clone), and given that they DIDN'T come with any filters in the nozzles, they may very well NOT be 'the real deal' (more on that below). Still, they ARE listed by Shure, both on Amazon and on their website, just for a LOT more money. By the way, the box my 535LTD-J came in says clearly; "1 Year Limited Warranty" for whatever that's worth. The manufacturing date below the barcode is Sept. 14, 2016. These IEMs are also known as the 'Asian Market' version, in addition to the 'International Version'.
Anyway, back to the 535LTD-J. Not being one to take or accept ANYTHING I read at face value (referring to reviewers claiming the 535LTD-J needs a better cable), when my 535LTD-J earphones arrived, I left the 'stock' cable plugged in, swapped out the stock eartips for my preferred tip (Comply foam), plugged them into my Cayin N5 DAP w/ Cayin C5 Portable Headphone Amp, dialed up the 24-bit/192KHz version of Sting's 'The Living Sea' and gave them a spin.
I really don't care what ANYONE says; the 535LTD-J IEMs have fantastic bass, even with the stock cable. While the stock cable isn't that great, the character and depth of the bass when using it is fantastic and it really does shine. Everything else though (mids and highs) seems ... well ... not very exciting. Not really laid back or subdued, just not very interesting and certainly not a thrill a minute. Maybe clinical would be a better description. Don't get me wrong, the mids are VERY good and the highs almost sparkle. They're just not what I expected and they're just not quite there, in terms of all the superlatives one would normally associate with great mids and highs. That said, you also have to recognize that my first listening impressions are based on a pair of 535LTD-J IEMs coming right out of the box! It'll be at least a week (probably longer) before they're actually burned in to the point where EVERYTHING will start to sound better and they WILL open up considerably.
Now for the eye-popping part of this review. I listened to the 535LTD-J for about an hour or so, going back and forth between Sting's "The Living Sea", Sara K. and Chris Jones' "Are We There Yet?", Supertramp's "Some Things Never Change", Jazz at the Pawnshop Vol 1, Jennifer Warnes 'Famous Blue Raincoat', Rebecca Pidgeon's "The Raven", Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature", Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill - Acoustic", Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry's "At the 2nd Fret" and a few other 24-bit/192KHz and DSD64/128 albums, just to see what these IEMs sound like with high quality audio files. They sound GREAT. Well, I thought they did until I swapped cables.
I have a Moon Audio 'Sliver Dragon' balanced cable that I got with my Shure SE846 IEMs. So, I hooked them up to the 535LTD-J, plugged them into the balanced output on the Cayin N5 (bypassing the headphone amp) and started going through the above list of albums, again, with the "GOOD" cable. WOW! What an amazing difference! For once, "THEY" were right about the stock cable desperately needing to be upgraded! Obviously, we're talking about the difference between a not-so-great 'stock' cable versus a $200 custom silver cable, and you SHOULD expect an improvement in audio quality. But HOLY MOLY, I didn't really expect THAT much of an improvement!
The Cayin has a 'digital' volume control and with it set at '45' (on a 0 to 100 scale), the 535LTD-J is VERY LOUD! It's still loud at 40 but at least it's not bordering on the threshold of pain to listen to, as it was at 45. The improvement in the quality of bass, especially the sub-bass, is dramatic! On Supertramp's "Some Things Never Change" album there's a song (Track 11) titled "C'est What?" that has a few extremely low frequency bass thumps in it (they might be synth generated) that go REALLY low and I could literally FEEL those thumps rumble through my head! REALLY dramatic and a REAL eye-popping experience! Mind you, I had (and STILL have) the equalizer in my Cayin N5 set to OFF, so I haven't tweaked ANYTHING.
EVERY NOTE across the entire frequency spectrum improved. The lower mids, mids, upper mids tightened up and smoothed out considerably. The female voice (Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat, in particular) sounds INCREDIBLE and even the old, dark, deep and scratchy voice of Brownie McGee sounded amazing and like he was standing right in front of me. These are the kind of IEMs that, with the RIGHT cable, make you rediscover your music collection and listen to it like you did the first time you heard what would ultimately become your favorite album! The highs now sparkle, by the way. No harshness, no grit or gravel. Just pure, very airy and sparkling highs. Superb definition, extension and articulation.
One thing did occur to me during this listening session and that was that I did NOT listen to the 535LTD-J with the stock cable plugged directly into my Cayin N5. The Cayin C5 is a somewhat warm sounding headphone amp that does very-so-slightly improve the bass response, but not like what I experienced. I have a Fiio A5 that I'll be testing with the 535LTD-J IEMs at some point too, but I have a good idea already how that will sound. The A5 has an extraordinarily flat frequency response (like reference flat) that adds ZERO color (tonal variations) to the sound of everything I plug into it. I find it boring though, simply because it's very clinical sounding. I like the Cayin C5 because of the slightly warm quality it adds to the mids, mostly because it makes voices (especially female voices) sound BETTER and highly focused. That's really the only range of frequencies it has an affect on though.
So, back to the topic of whether my particular Shure 535LTD-J is the 'real deal' or not; I really don't care if it is or not. The fact that it doesn't have any filters in the nozzles MIGHT explain why it sounds the way it does, which is superb (at least with the Sliver Dragon cable it does). And too, Shure states in their ad that the 535LTD-J does indeed have a completely different sound signature than the US variants do. So, who knows. I have a complete set (plus extras) of Knowles filters that should fit the 535LTD-J. I don't have a US version of the 535, so I don't have anything to compare my 535LTD-J to, other than my other IEMs, which wouldn't really be a fair comparison. Once they're broken/burned in though, I'll find out what effect the Knowles filters have on the 535LTD-J and will do some experimenting with 'filter rolling.' I'll update this review when that happens, if anyone is interested.
My normal "rig" is my recording studio, where EVERYTHING is 'balanced', which is why I wanted the balanced version of the 'Silver Dragon' cable. Also, I tend to purchase IEMs that use MMCX connectors exclusively and just so I can use my 'Silver Dragon' cable on ALL of them. Well, not all but most. There are a few bone-headed IEM designers out there that THINK that by making their MMCX connectors 'different' that people will just naturally want them or will (unnaturally) gravitate to them, because they're so cool (what-ever). Not a chance.
I steer away from nearly ALL of them, since there's nothing inherently wrong with the MMCX connector to begin with. I've NEVER had one fail, fall out, function intermittently nor have I experienced ANY issues with them. EVER. They just flat work and they ARE extraordinarily reliable connectors. "Don't fix it if it ain't broke" is, to me, a very SOUND philosophy (pun intended).
I'm not sure how good or bad this review might be, in relationship to what YOU might be looking for and in terms of sound quality descriptions or anything else I wrote. I just thought my experience with the 535LTD-J might be useful to someone who is either considering buying it or already has it and is wondering what a custom cable might do for its sound quality. I also don't know how popular OR unpopular my 'Silver Dragon' cable or ANY of my other hardware might be. I like my Cayin N5 a LOT and mostly because of it's balanced output and the fact that it CAN handle everything I throw at it (24-bit files, DSD files, whatever). All I know is how it sounds to ME, and with the 535LTD-J plugged into the Silver Dragon cable, it sounds FANTASTIC!
UPDATE: 3/1/2017
The IEM I received is NOT the Shure SE535LTD-J. It is the Shure SE535LTD-CHN - MADE IN CHINA for the Asian market. I don't know what the difference is between the Shure SE535LTD-J and the Shure SE535LTD-CHN, in terms of build quality and/or functionality, but the build quality of the Chinese version that I received is of very poor quality. Just swapping the tips feels like the nozzles will break at even the slightest pressure. The are very small in diameter (about half the diameter of the US made SE535LTD) and they do NOT have filters in them, no doubt because no one (least of all Knowles) makes any filters small enough to fit them). There isn't even a screen in them to keep out ear wax particles. If anything drops into them, it'll go straight into the earpiece and WILL contact the drivers.
The 'stock' cable is terrible and the sound quality it produces is substandard. Sure, I'm using a $200 Moon Audio 'Sliver Dragon' cable with these IEMs and can's and string would probably sound pretty good using this cable. NOT knowing, however, how the Shure SE535LTD-J actually sounds, since that's NOT what I received, I don't really have a proper reference for how these IEMs are SUPPOSED to sound.
All that said I still stand by my review of their sound quality with the Silver Dragon cable. They sound GREAT and I have NOT made up my mind yet whether or not to return these IEMs. I will soon though and I WILL update this review again.
UPDATE: 3/3/2017
I submitted a refund request through Amazon and the seller replied that they would refund me the full amount I paid for these IEMs, plus my shipping costs. That's generous and the reply I received was prompt. The seller also apologized for the mislabeling of the SE535LTD-CHN in the ad as the SE535LTD-J, which they claim was an Amazon mistake. They do look very much like the SE535LTD-J, but they are definitely NOT the same. I also sent them a picture of the bottom of the box where the SE535LTD-CHN is clearly visible on the label.
The accessories they come with are different (not as many ear tips), the cable is completely different (no cell phone controls), the nozzles are NOT metal; they are just cheap, flimsy looking plastic and there are no filters in them. That (the lack of filters) and the cheap, plastic nozzles are my biggest concerns. If earwax or any dirt/debri were to get inside the nozzles and drop down into the chamber where the drivers sit, who knows what might happen to those expensive drivers. It just seems like too big of a risk to me. And too, just changing the ear tips makes me feel like those plastic nozzles might snap right off.
So, I am reluctantly shipping back the Shure SE535LTD-CHN IEMs today. I do like the sound of them with my $200 Silver Dragon cable, but not having anything to compare them to, like the REAL Shure SE535LTD-J, and the fact that they do sound pretty bad with the stock cable and that I DIDN'T receive what the ad said they were, well ... live and learn and back they go. Hopefully this won't happen to anyone else.
