あと「BORN THIS WAY」をあまりに聴きすぎ、新しい「BORN THIS WAY」が聴きたかったから。 Live From The Cherrytree Houseの「POKERFACE」はいつ聴いても泣きそうになる。

Minority Report - the remix

I started with a tempered positive review after a first listening - after a dozen I am verging into the intemperate.
This is a five star album, and here's why:
1) It's over 70 minutes long:
"Oh yeah, right", I can hear you saying, "don't you know music is about quality, not quantity?" Yeah? Are you sure it's ALL about quality? Then why have we never heard a concert with $100+ seats where the audience files in, hears about 20 minutes of the HIGHEST quality music ever created, and goes home feeling they've got their money's worth? Why are none of the world's greatest painting the size of a postage stamp?
Like any other good (you either paid for it or stole it - either way, a "good"), both quality AND quantity are important in setting value. Many pop artists, as we know, foist off albums at about 45 minutes, some even falling below the 40 mark! Was that the "artistically correct length"? Or was that the producer's decision to sell three albums out of 140 minutes of material, rather than two? I know what I think, and that's why any album which clocks in at over 70 minutes in my book gets a bonus point for value, unless the material is junk from edge to spindle.
2) OMG some of this is GOOD!
Two of the tracks are so artistic, that they've already paid for five stars, even if the rest were nothing more than the loop from a Mr. Softie truck. First (and absolutely no offense meant to anybody) changing Judas's lover to a lisping but emotionally engaging male voice, coupled with creepy mass crowd sounds, is one of those inexplicably brilliant moves that your unconscious gapes at even while your conscious mind is struggling to figure it out. "Dark"? Yes!
The second of the two-that-pay-for-all moments is the quarter tone harmonies in "Marry the Night". Frigging quarter tones, man! Ninety plus years after Charles Ives's art song "Like a Sick Eagle", quarter tones edge their way into American popular music! And they work! Lady frigging Gaaaaga! (I don't normally write in this effusive vein - I am in fact a little old to write in this vein - but this IS pop music, so I think it's OK - not, of course, that I'm asking for permission, yeah).
The icing is, the rest of the CD is NOT a loop from an ice cream truck - not every moment is artistically moving (not Johannes Brahms's music either, bub), but there are a LOT of good moments sown in there: I feel like I've got a good two or three albums worth of music out of a single CD: A+, Mr. Commercial American Music Industry (for once)!
