Problemi di lettura sul giradischi

Back to the beautiful basics

The Magnetic Fields created a monster with their epic and masterful three-disc "69 Love Songs" and though they have had their moments since, the concept-strapped albums which followed- "i", "Distortion", Realism"- never quite captured that spark again. Stephin Merritt, the mastermind behind not only the Fields but Future Bible Heroes (my favorite of his incarnations), the 6ths and the Gothic Archies, as well as his varied solo works, is at his songwriting best when it is kept simple and fun. His turn of phrases and humor, both witty and dark, are second to none in the indie world. "Love at the Bottom of the Sea" isn't tied to any concept (which makes it sound more like a bouncy Future Bible Heroes release) and is the better for it. It recaptures the easy joy of the pre-69LS albums and sounds fresh and reborn. Stand-out cuts are "God Wants Us To Wait", The Horrible Party", "Andrew in Drag" and "Quick!", though every song has its razor-sharp hook and punch line. If you're a fan but have not been tickled by the Fields' output since "69 Love Songs", I promise you this is a solid return to form and fun.

Listen for yourself, not to the negative reviews

Is this the best Magnetic Fields album ever? No. Is it the "Best MF album since..."? That's nearly impossible to judge since virtually every album in the group's catalogue is so wildly divergent from the one before it. That being said, the sound of "Love at the Bottom of the Sea" is very much in line with 1995's "Get Lost," which happens to be my favorite album from the Magnetic Fields. (I guess, then, that you can take this review with a grain of salt for that very reason.)
So, what's left to do? I guess we should judge the album as its own work and the songs on their own merits.
1.) "God Wants Us to Wait" is a very funny take-down of the current environment of sexual politics and religion. In the same vein as "We Are Having a Hootenanny" from "Realism," this track has a memorable, thumping backbeat that makes it a very strong opener for the album.
2.) "Andrew in Drag" is Mr. Merritt in prime lyrical form. The sound is vintage Magnetic Fields - in a very good way.
3.) "Your Girlfriend's Face" is, admittedly, my favorite track. A hilarious contemplation of hiring an assassin for an ex and his present girlfriend, the entire lyrical line is so focused in being unhinged that you need to listen again to make sure you did hear it right. You did.
I'm going to stop because I'm telling you what I think is good, which is rather against the point of my review. I find "Infatuation (With Your Gyration)," "Goin' Back to the Country," "My Husband's Pied-a-Terre," and "Quick!" are all very good tracks - better than the accusation of being nothing more than B-Sides, such as other reviewers have written.
Is this album made of five-star, solid-gold songs? No, but it's much better than people are making it out to be. There are, in my opinion, quite a few songs that will enter the standard MF repertoire. Give it a listen for yourself if you happen to be a Magnetic Fields fan - especially of their earlier work. You might just be surprised.

A tad disappointing, but still a fun, breezy little album- 07/10

Do not get me wrong, this is NOT a bad album - There are some damn fine, catchy, jaunty and funny songs on this album, but it is without a doubt their most uninspired album - though Realism had less good songs, it DID have a more identifiale, folky sound to set it apart. Love at the bottom of the sea, however, simply sounds like a "Magnetic fields" album - this is the band going back to basics, which is not necessarily a BAD thing, but it seems as if Merritt has forgot to write inspired, richly melodic pop songs as consistently as he has done in the past.
A fair few of the songs, whilst still quite enjoyable, feel VERY standard - in the past, even when some songs within the typical Mfields framework sounded similar, there was always some instrumental flourish or vocal melody to pick things up a bit and make it more identifiable, but on this album, a few too many, for me, sound simple very VERY "standard" - very uninspired, though due to the band's almost immediately recognisable, loveable sound, they do not exactly stray into "bad" territory - but if you are as big a fields fan as me, it is hard not to be slightly disappointed that so many of the songs lack that extra something to make them more memorable. HOWEVER, a fair few still do - Even if not quite as memorable as some of what has come before, a number of tracks are highly catchy and may soon find themselves in some best of playlist of the band soon (as they did with me).
Some of the highlights mentioned above are the single, Andrew in Drag, a highly fun, funny, cheeky song with a memorable sound - Infatuation (with your gyration) is something a bit different, but has a cool sound, and gets quite "dancy" in a very likeable way - The machine in your hand sounds quite standard, but, to me at least, has quite a memorable on going vocal melody and I find myself listening to it more and more - ditto with My husbands pied-a-terre; again nothing highly inspired, and not a classic, but VERY enjoyable, good old fields sound, just a good wee song. The last two tracks are my favourites: Quick and All she cares about is mariachi. Mariachi in particular has a very memorable style of vocal from Merritt.
So, whilst not anything approaching the band's best, most inspired album, there is a lot to enjoy from this bright, breezy, jaunty wee album - a fair few good songs, and no real BAD ones means that whilst it does not inspire much, it doesn't exactly leave you with feelings of major dissappointment either. Better than realism, but nothing approaching Distortion, songs, or highway strip - you are probably more likely to get something out of this quirky wee album if you are a major fan of the band's sound.
