This is the first release from the Dirty Three since 2005's Cinder. For those of you familiar with Dirty Three music, Cinder was a big change for the group, as it was composed of shorter songs, which seemed less spontaneous and more methodical.
However, Dirty Three have returned to their original style of composition here on Toward the Low Sun. The style of songs are remiscent of their earlier releases, sounding more intuitive and improvised. The surprising thing is that the sounds and melodies are all very original. It seems they have been rejuvinated and recharged over the past 7 years and produced something entirely fresh, yet sticking to their roots.
The first few songs sound a little more experimental and a flashback to the groups earlier days. As the album proceeds the melodies and sounds become more and more beautiful, reminding you of why you are a fan of this group.
Bottom line, if you enjoyed previous releases by the Dirty Three, then you will be pleased with the musical content on this album. It is a fresh twist to the groups signature sound, while experimenting and pushing the boundaries even further than before.
Long live the Dirty Three!
