Digitally re-mastered edition of this eponymous 1974 album from six of Scotland's finest musicians. Heavily influenced by Fairport Convention, this classic Folk Rock album is one of Scotland's best kept secrets and stands up well to comparisons with Steeleye Span, Pentangle and Fairport themselves. Originally released on Transatlantic, the album features traditional Folk songs, contemporary ballads and self-penned tracks in an up-tempo Folk Rock style. Featuring the superb vocal talents of Mae McKenna who went on to have an extensive solo career as well as providing backing vocals to everyone from Pete Townshend to Kylie. Multi-instrumentalist brothers Billy and George Jackson along with fiddle player John Martin formed the legendary Ossian. Members of Contraband later joined Easy Club, Isla and Gryphon. Celtic Folk.

スコットランド出身のトラッド/フォークバンド、コントラバンドのアルバム。1974作
ブリティッシュフォークの名作のひとつに数えられる本作は、メイ・マッケンナの美しい歌声と、
ギターとフィドルを中心とした巧みな演奏による正統的なトラッドソング聴かせる。
ロック的なドラムも入っていることで、SPRIGUNSあたりに通じる質感もあるが、
こちらの方がもう少し牧歌的でケルティック、またやわらかなカントリー調の趣もある。
STEELEYE SPANあたりのシリアスさともまた違う、のんびりと楽しめる好作といってよい。

I am so pleased to finally get this album on CD. I've had the vinyl issue since the late 1970's and have been waiting many years for it's release on CD. It's a classic folk-rock album, easily on a par with Fairport's Liege and Leif. Mae's voice is simply sublime and the band's mixture of traditional and more modern folk makes it one of those albums that can't be forgotten - it's a shame that it has been just that for all these years.
Standout tracks for me: the hauntingly beautiful 'Banks Of Claudy' and 'On The Road' as well as the unforgettable 'Lady For Today'.
I learnt to play 'Alex's Interlude' many years ago, it made my kids laugh, but it gave me a sore head!

A delightful album from this Scottish folk band. Unfortunately although there are no extra tracks included on the 2012 re-issue of the original 1974 release, it does however include an excellent booklet with detailed background information.
They successfully mix traditional folk songs such as 'rattlin' roarin' willie' & 'the banks of claudy' with Celtic jigs & reels (the reel at the end of 'the black rogue' is especially good), beautiful ballads such as 'lady for today' where Mae's vocals just shine through and more contemporary folk ('on the road' & 'edward sayers' brass band') the latter sounding a lot like Strawbs.
Do be honest i could have done without the whimsical 'stainforth blues' but overall a fine edition for lovers of Celtic(ish) folk.

Like other reviewers, I was pleased to see this album finally released on CD having owned the vinyl version back when noah was a lad. At its best, Mae's voice rivals that of Sandy Denny. Not all the tracks have stood the test of time, but well worth the money. A classic that deserves greater recognition.
