映画『八月の鯨』（DVD『八月の鯨』＜リンゼイ・アンダーソン監督、リリアン・ギッシュ、ベティ・デイヴィス出演、パラマウント　ホーム　エンタテインメント　ジャパン＞）では、往年の名女優が老女役で競演しています。

リビーとセーラの年老いた姉妹は、小島の海辺に建つセーラの別荘で夏を過ごしています。病のため目が不自由でセーラに面倒を見てもらっているリビーは、気難しさで周囲の人間を傷つけることもしばしばです。そういう日々が淡々と描かれていきます。

リビーの「すべてが消えてゆくわ　遅かれ早かれ」、「貴重な残り時間はもうわずかだわ」、セーラの「情熱と真実こそ人生のすべてだと思うわ」という台詞が印象に残りました。

老いは誰にも容赦なく訪れること、老いの日々をどう生きていくべきか――を考えさせられる作品です。

若い時に見て心に残ってた作品です。シニア世代になって改めて手に入れて観たのですが
イギリス作品いいですね。うるさくなくて。どこも盛り上がりはありませんが、普通の老姉妹の掛け合いが面白かったです。

『八月の鯨』を初めて観た。リリアン・ギッシュ、ベティ・デイヴィス。この二人の存在感に完全に魅了された。

この映画が公開された1988年。私は大学1年生。一人暮らしを始め、毎週のように映画を観ていた時期。特にキネ旬のベスト10作品は映画館やビデオを借りて観まくっていた。

1988年というと、『ラストエンペラー』『フルメタル・ジャケット』『ベルリン天使の詩』『存在の耐えられない軽さ』『黒い瞳』が上位を飾った年。『八月の鯨』もそんな洋画豊作の年のキネ旬年間4位の作品である。

しかし、私はこの作品を観ていなかった。観る気もなかった。当時、アメリカン・ニューシネマやフレンチBBCにハマっていた私。老人しか出てこないような映画に全く興味を抱くことはなかった。

つい最近、偶々、U-NEXTでこの作品で見かけて気になっていた。53歳の今だからこそ、観る気になったと思うのだけど、確かに観て良かったと思える作品だった。

「人生の半分はトラブルで、あと半分はそれを乗り越えるためにある」。この台詞がこの映画の名言としてよく取り上げられる。しかし、この台詞を吐くのは主人公の二人ではなく、二人の幼馴染みである老婦人ティシャ。彼女が会話の中でサラッと言うので、名言と知られているわりに、正直、あまり印象に残らない。

ティシャと共に饒舌なのは、老紳士ミスター・マラノフ。彼も人生訓のような台詞を沢山吐くが、こちらも同様にその饒舌さ故にあまり印象に残らない。

リリアン・ギッシュ。当時、御年93歳。彼女は、姉役のベティ・デイヴィス（当時、御年79歳）から常にBusy、Busyと揶揄される。生真面目で、働き者で、常に忙しく動き回っていて、教訓めいた言葉、人生を悟ったような言葉を一切吐かない。

盲目で気難しい姉に寄り添い、彼女の世話をする。死んだ伴侶との46回目の結婚記念日を静かに一人祝う。隣人たちに気を遣い、彼らの話をよく聞いてあげる。姉は妹の気丈な思いを感じて言葉に出来ない感謝を抱く。サマーハウスに新しい大きな窓を付ける決断をする。そして、八月の鯨を只管に待つ。

この映画の名言は、実は語られることのない彼女達の心の有り様なのではないだろうか。其々の歴史に刻まれた其々の心の重み、それは一般化できない。その名言は、言葉にできない静謐な生の佇まいの中にこそある。カメラはそんな彼女達が連れ立ってゆっくりと歩く、その握り合う手、歩調を合わせる足元を映す。

エンディングの音楽も、彼女達が岬に佇むラストシーンの美しさ、その老齢な生の勁さを感じるが故に心に残った。

　サイレント時代の伝説の美少女スター、リリアン・ギッシュ。そんな彼女の動く姿を映画で観たのは、この映画がはじめてだった。いまは、サイレント時代の映画も簡単に楽しめるようになったが、当時は淀川さんの語りくらいでしか知ることができない世界でした。そんなリリアン・ギッシュだが、ご本人は、伝説なんてどこ吹く風とばかり、９０歳をこえても自然体の素晴らしい演技というか、その御姿をみせてくれる。すごくチャーミングなお婆さんなんだが、自分の意に染まないことには、しっかりと物を言う芯の強い女性を演じている。共演のベティ・デイビスもまた伝説の女優。タイトルでは、名前がデイビスが左に、ギッシュが右側だが、ちょっと上に表示される。「タワーリング・インフェルノ」のポール・ニューマンとスティーブ・マックイーンの名前の表示を思い出した。ギッシュとは対照的に、まわりから疎まれ嫌われるデイビスの役どころは、また彼女ならではの存在感を示していて見事。ラストの何とも言えない感動を呼び起こす。ヴィンセント・プライス、ハリー・ケリー・Ｊｒも出演。老姉妹の日常生活とそこに生じる葛藤を静かに描き出すリンゼイ・アンダーソン監督の腕前もまた見事なもの。「八月の鯨」とは、何を表しているのだろう。昔も今も、毎年のようにやってきて、いつでも見れるようで、なかなかその姿を観ることができない幻のようなものなのだろうか・・・。

I have long loved this film. In what was to be the last movie starring both Lillian Gish and Ann Southern along with Bette Davis and Vincent Price the screen brings to life the play by David Berry. Set on the coast of Maine, two widowed sisters (Gish and Davis) face the declining years with opposite perspectives on the future and mutual memories of the past. A very tender story, well written and executed.

A moving film transferred solidly to the blu-ray hi-def format. Oddly, the performances are not altogether as smooth as one might have expected as the action takes place in short vignettes, juxtaposed with stunning scenes of the New England coastline, and these sometimes come across as rather staccato. Similarly, both Bette Davis and Lillian Gish are clearly very old indeed and don't quite command the acting skills that they once possessed. Ironically, on the extras the extended interviews with all the main players show that they were much more in possession of their faculties than the characters they represent. I suspect director Lindsay Anderson had quite a task making this small feature and did what he could with a not particularly easy cast - at least where Miss Davis was concerned. Still it was sufficiently interesting for me to order a rare copy of the theatrical play script on which the film was based, as its haunting quality has a fascinating, if somewhat depressing, allure. I had to order the Blu Ray from Amazon US and it was very well delivered to the UK by DPD then, unfortunately, Yodel took it to someone else's house a mile away from my own (with a totally different address) thus causing me great difficulty in tracking it down. Still, such is life with many 21st century service providers.

I first watched this movie about a decade ago and immediately loved it. Bette Davis who plays the character "Libby" was the reason I watched, but Lillian Gish, who plays Davis' sister "Sarah" stole the show. Davis at age 79, was not in good health and it showed. Gish, who plays the younger sister, is really 15 years older than Davis, and even though she was 94, she looks like she was Davis' age. That was one of the peculiar parts of this movie. There too was an awkward familiarity in Davis' mannerisms and speaking voice. She seemed to be trying to conjure up her character's personas from her earlier movies. "Margo Channing" in "All About Eve" "Charlotte Hollis" in "Hush, Hush sweet Charlotte" and the character "Jane Hudson" in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane" (The latter two are my favorites) but instead of coming across as her usual commanding self, Davis' speech patterns were odd and halting. Enough so that it made her character "Libby" seem a little confused and disoriented, which made it just slightly uncomfortable to watch, but not enough to negatively affect the overall prominence of her role. Gish, by being delightfully charming and convincingly concerned for her sister and filling in any gaps left by Davis, saved Davis' role as "Libby" from becoming an irrelevant caricature. There are other heavy hitters in this movie. "Vincent Price" who plays "Nicholas Maranov. "Ann Sothern" as "Tisha" and "Harry Carey Jr." as "Joshua Bracket". This movie is set in the year 1954 in Maine on an actual coastal island named "Cliff Island" and begins with a flashback from decades ago with the characters "Libby" "Tisha" and "Sarah" as young women, calling to each other to come and see the whales. Later, as the movie fast-forwards to the scripts present time, you discover that the two sisters are estranged but "Libby" being infirmed needs her sister to help care for her which Gish does well. I love Gish's openness and verve as she goes about her daily tasks which includes caring for Libby who is blind. In Gish you see a lot of the history of Hollywood manifesting itself in her character. I was and am completely charmed by Gish's performance. Sothern plays Tisha, a dear friend to Sarah and visits the sisters and it's very clear that Tisha does not like Libby and is very critical of her. Carey plays an obnoxious handy man and Price plays a Russian ex patriot who has lost his place to stay when his friend dies and although the house belong to Sarah, Libby makes it clear that he won't be staying with she and her sister. At times, Davis' character is a little over the top with her dislike for Maranov. It didn't seem to fit the other characters opinions of Maranov, and Price and his character's reaction to Libby's disdain was so convincing that I couldn't help but wonder if that angst was not only part of the script but also the actual opinions each actor had for the other. Again it looked like Davis was trying to conjure up old personas to give drama to her lines but IMO it fell flat. In the end Libby and Sarah have a breakthrough. The scenery is shot on the actual island and is beautiful to see. Since I've purchased this video I've watched it 9 times and aside from the criticisms I have, which are really minor compared to the overall acting in this movie, I find "The Whales of August" to be a very charming movie and I very highly recommend it for all ages.

un film sensible et très beau, qui change tout à fait de la vulgarité habituelle du cinéma américain.On dirait du Tchekhov mis en scène par Nikita Mikhalkov, ce qui n'est certes pas un mince compliment. Le jeu des actrices et des acteurs est admirable et profondément émouvant, tous au bout de leur magnifique carrière. Je ne me lasserai jamais de voir et revoir ce chef d'oeuvre, vraiment. Quel bonheur et quelle émotion!
