１２年発表の１ｓｔ。トレヴァー・ホーン、ロル・クレーム、クリス・ブレイド、ステーヴ・リプソン、アッシュ・ソーンの５人で結成され、０７年にシングル Barking Up The Right Tree／Freeway でデビュー。ライヴ活動などを行っていたそうだが、そこから一気に５年もの歳月を経て発表されたデビュー・アルバムが本作。とっくに解散していたと思っていた人も多かったと思うが、どちらにしても先のシングルは彼らのイメージを覆すかのような仕上がりかつ、稀に見る佳曲であり、本作への期待は聞く前から嫌が応にも高まる。当初メンバーの一人と思われていたクリス・ブレイドはクレジットにはあるものの、ジャケットの写真には写っておらず（４人で映ったモノクロ写真がカッコいい！！）、またジャケットの表のメンバー表記にもないことから、彼は本作では本来の裏方に戻ったのかもしれない。
先に発表したシングル曲もニュー・バージョンとして完全に取り直されており、それらを含めて楽曲の質が恐ろしく高い。そしてアレンジ、録音、ミックスなどのさじ加減の素晴らしさが際立っており、全てにおいて彼らの持っているイメージを覆すほどの魅力を放っている。サイケやブルース・ロック、フォークなどをベースにした楽曲も目立つものの、それらの薬臭さや土臭さを完全に排除してモダンに仕上げるあたりは彼らの面目躍如といったところだろう。全体に感じられる近未来感はかつのバグルスの先を見た音像といった印象か？しかしながらそのベース・プレイやシンセの使い方、そしてヴォーカルにはいかにもバグルス～イエス～AONといった部分もあり、感じられる近未来感が決してバグルスから遥か彼方といった印象は受けない。多くの否定的な意見を受けるかもしれないが、このグループは３０数年を経て再結成されたバグルスと考えたい。それにつけても涙なしには聞けない名作である。誰が聞いてもトレヴァー・ホーンのベースとヴォーカルはあの時代そのままである。
尚、本作は当初１枚もので発表されたが、すぐにエクステンド・バージョンや本編未収録曲など５曲を収録したCDを追加した２枚組も登場した。更に日本版ではここに未収録曲の「プロードウェイ」そして「フリー・ウェイ」のライヴ・バージョンも追加されている。
Ｐ．Ｓ．で、いつフル収録のライヴ盤はでるのでしょうか？１０枚組のボックス・セットで出ても買いますけど・・・。

期待を裏切らない、ある意味スーパーバンド

　バンド名の由来は、言わずもがな。みんなプロデューサーとして活躍してきた人たち。個人的には、バグルスが好きだったし、そのトレバー・ホーンが、ほんとうにひさしぶりに演奏し歌う側で活躍するというのだから、どうしても期待してしまうのだけれども。
　プロデューサーとしての仕事もひと段落ついたし、定年後のおじさんたちのバンド、というイメージはぜんぜんなく、むしろレコーディングアーティストとして、これまでの仕事でためてきたものを出し切ったという感じがして、みんな若いよな、とも思ってしまう。
　バグルスや１０ｃｃのファンでも、十分に納得するはず。
　あと、いきなり女性の声で「男の子は泣いちゃだめ」って聞こえてきても、びっくりしないように。

スティーブン・リプトン＝アニーレノックスの「メデューサ」アルバムは本当に本当に本当に素晴らしかった。

などのプロデューサーらのバンドである。

一曲目のfreewayが本当に素晴らしい。

だれもが口ずさめるような覚えやすいメロディーではない。

でも、素晴らしい。

アカン、説明でけへん。

覚えれるメロディーだけが音楽のすべてではないという、当たり前の真実をいまさら確認した。

これ歌ってるのだれやろ。

ほんま素晴らしいわ。

Having been a long-time fan of the various production efforts of Trevor Horn, Lol Creme, and Steve Lipson, I had high expectations that this would be another stellar work. And I was not disappointed. There are no standout tracks; they all stand out. Most notable are:

Freeway is a frenetic tribute to the L.A. freeway system (no joke), California's bucolic coastal highways, and driving in general. To be fair, Horn wanted to capture the experience of speeding at 90 up the I-405 northbound through the Santa Monica Mountains, cresting the hill in the wee hours of the morning, bringing the San Fernando Valley in all its splendor into view. The song is steeped in Horn's signature sound. Lush harmonies combined with elevated, lofty riffs and optimistic progressions make for a wonderful audio experience. Ash Soan, the timekeeper, is a machine! An amazing drummer!

Man On The Moon is a heartfelt lullaby that has shades of Elton John's pop sensibilities in it. It carries you wistfully along with its powerful but still soulful guitar solos.

Garden of Flowers is Trevor's lament on day of inclement weather, unable to go out on his boat. The song carries a powerful undercurrent in its guitars.

You and I is an ELP/Yes progrock fantasy. More fat harmonies snuck in on the fringes of your audio image make for an aural kaleidoscope. The vocal layering in the bridges are clearly homages to Jon Anderson. The acoustic guitars pay fair tribute to Steve Hackett, even if incomplete. The closing tack piano is a nice touch, too.

Your Life is bookended with Yes signatures, borrowing riffs from Roundabout. It starts out kinda minimalist, the way Seal did on some of his tracks. That "less is more" effect really works here.

Seven sounds like a Lol Creme song. The liner notes don't indicate as such, but the direct narrative sounds like it was borne of a subplot of Spielberg's A.I. Penned in septuple meter, the song sends me back to some of the quirkiness of Godley & Creme's Wet Rubber Soup. After several listens, the song's hook is not just it's story, but also the harmonic Vocoders on the verses.

The hidden track is "the backing track to Two Tribes", the back half of the extended Freeway track on disc 2. Borrowed from FGTH's Pleasuredome, it's a nearly 5-minute instrumental piece that isn't anything spectacular unto itself, except that this recording was taken out live, without any post production work. It sounds great, considering there are no real studio tricks at work here. It's almost as if you're hearing an unpolished Trevor Horn demo, which starts out with four times the polish of any standard demo.

If you like the all the flourishes that Trevor Horn includes in his productions, then you are sure to enjoy this CD.

This is an amazing album, which should't come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the talent involved. The songs range from power-pop ("Waiting for the Right Time") to acoustic ballad ("Man on the Moon") to Buggles-esque ("Seven"); my overall favorite from the album is "Freeway" (the single that lead me to the band/album), though several other tracks are close behind. The vocals are primarily split - as far as I can tell - between Chris Braide (mysteriously uncredited on the cover) and Lol Creme (10cc), though Trevor Horn (The Buggles, Yes) takes the lead on a few tracks, and gives many of the background vocal tracks a nice polish; Stephen Lipson (a well-pedigreed studio musician) and Ash Soan (Del Amitri, Squeeze) round out the band. As most of the performers are also producers (hence, the name of the group), the sound quality is nothing short of phenomenal. Finally, I highly recommend purchasing the two-disc version of the album, as it feature an additional five tracks, plus an unlisted sixth live instrumental track.

... und scheinbar völlig mühelos, so klingt der Super-Pop der Producers. Nick Cohn konstatierte einst: "Was ist schon drittklassige KUNST gegen Super-Pop?" und Lol Creme, Trevor und ihre Mitstreiter beweisen, dass er recht hat mit "Made in Basing Street" beeindruckend. Wer intelligente easy-go-lucky-Musik mag, wer sich schon früher für den intelligenten Pop von 10cc begeistern konnte, der ist hier absolut richtig!

As soon as I read a review of this CD, I knew that I had to get it. And guess what, I was expecting it to be good but found it to be brilliant. If you loved the Buggles ( like I did ) then you have to know that Trevor's voice hasn't aged at all to my ears, mainly I assume because he's not used it enough. Pity.
Whilst I'm less familiar with the back catalogue of Lol, Ash and Stephen, there is a maturity and grace that runs though the whole album which I presume only comes with not only musical experience but life experiences too.
This album is one that will sit in my car's CD player for a very very long time, I can't recommend it highly enough.
