While die-hard Boyle fans may initially dismiss this sequel due to the fact that the visionary director opted not to reprise his role at the helm, a quick glance at the credits reveals that not only did he remain onboard as executive producer, but the original producer, original screenwriter and even the original composer, whose swelling score effectively drives home the emotion of the smaller, quieter moments while seamlessly sweeping the viewer up in the action scenes, all saw fit to remain on board in order to keep the machine running smoothly. Throw into the mix a promising director and you have the perfect recipe for a sequel that impressively maintains the aesthetics and intimate feel of the original while subtly expanding on the mythology in a manner that, while impossible to discuss without resorting to spoilers, feels both fluid and organic.
Though this sequel has a handful of eyebrow-raising issues, the overall result is a thinking person's "zombie apocalypse" a flick that maintains an impressive emotional core while never losing sight of its genre roots.
The directors abilities may not yet be honed to the fine point that Boyle's were by the time he took on the infected, but he does display an impressive ability to conjure convincing performances from his players; Robert Carlyle in particular hits all the right notes as a survivor of the original outbreak whose fate is sealed by a particularly blameworthy act of cowardice. Whereas the director could be accused of relying too much on the eye-straining technique of camera jostling when things take a turn for the worse and the infection remerges, it's hard to argue that the technique doesn't effectively convey the chaos that characters experience when trapped between trigger-happy snipers and teeth-gnashing zombies. Even when the technique is more restrained, however, the direction has the ability to make the viewer believe the situation is calm before pulling back to reveal that things aren't quite what they seem and it goes a long way in driving home the disorienting volatility of such an explosive scenario.
In terms of screenwriting, the story is full and rich and nicely balanced so it doesn't bore us with re-visited details of the last film but gives us enough depth so newcomers to the Franchise can understand what is going on. This results in the creation of characters that are identifiable and sympathetic, and unrelentingly tense situations that truly fray the nerves.
In the end 28 Weeks Later is a film that's likely to be as polarizing for many viewers as its predecessor was due to its unique experimentation with genre standards. Weeks impressively expands on the ideas of Days while upping the scale and terror ante, and actually attempts to stimulate thought rather than insulting the viewer's intelligence, there's quite a bit to like about this vicious little screamer.
28 Days wasn't trying to be an action-packed, gore-fest zombie movie. That's been done to death before. It was more intelligent, subtle, understated. The sub-plot with the British soldiers really intrigued me & added a psychological factor. But it fell apart at the end... the zombie chase scenes thru the mansion were sooooo bad they'd have been left on a 70's B movie cutting room floor & such a screeching, abrupt ending that i wondered what the cast & crew were in such a hurry to get away from??? Great film ruined by a poor ending.
28 Weeks isn't trying to be intelligent, subtle or understated. And it succeeds where 28 Days failed by sticking to the principles it starts with!
The film opens with Don (Carlyle) & his wife Alice (McCormack) holed up with a few other survivors in a country house. It isn't long tho before those pesky infected folk come knocking on, or rather crashing thru, the door & Don leaves his wife to be devoured rather than run back to try to save her & face certain doom himself.
28 Weeks later we find Don being reunited with his 2 kids Andy (Muggleton) & Tammy (Poots) who are returning to be re-patriated having, apparently, been living safe & sound in Spain(?).
NATO (which seems to consist entirely of Americans) is charged with the clean-up & re-population of London (the rest of Britain doesn't exist for the purposes of this film) & for now is taking place on the Isle of Dogs, or New London, which has been scrubbed up nicely.
Security on this little safe haven is done American style - snipers with high velocity rifles on rooftops, machine gun stations, combat choppers. Yup, theres enough military hardware to keep out the entire population of China - shame they forgot to put any sturdy gates or fencing up though.
Suffice to say that sneaky little virus finds a way in & all hell breaks loose. Maybe it's mutated in the 6 or so months since 28 Days but the virus now goes from 0-60 in a few seconds, whereas in 28 Days it took quite a few minutes. Maybe that's just progress for you.
When the Americans highly thought thru containment plan (lock everyone in the underground car park & turn all the lights off everywhere) fails & the infected & un-infected alike start spilling out, the order is given to 'shoot anyone' - which is probably the most accurate portrayal of the American military in the entire film.
This gives rise to the 'American Hero', Sgt. Doyle, the soldier who decides to leave his post because he 'doesn't just shoot anyone' & attempt to lead a group of un-infected folk (quickly reduced to the central characters) to safety.
Cue lots of chasing, explosions, blood, guts & vom inducing touchy feely moments.
It might sound like i didn't enjoy the film - but actually i did!
Whilst i found most of the characters unsympathetic, they were acted well & their fates weren't predictable.
The action sequences are gripping & very well filmed & the end of the film doesn't disappoint.
It's pretty gory - but it's supposed to be & the gore is done well.
On a final note, i didn't think much of the DVD special features - but i rarely do so don't take much notice of me there!
