That's why...
Isn't it time :
From there to back again :
That's Why God Made The Radioでいい意味で裏切られた。
Spreading the love and sunshine to a whole new generation

Right off the bat Think About the Days treats us to an amazing vocal by the Boys that is truly heart-wrenching, something Brian is a master at, and the tack-piano with reverb brings us back to shades of "Sunflower." It segues into the upbeat That's Why God Made the Radio, a showcase for the classic Beach Boys harmonies!
Shelter is a nod to I Get Around with Jeffrey Foskett taking the falsetto chorus ala Brian Wilson in his hey-day! It's a fairly mundane song until that chorus kicks in and is brought to life by the unwavering vocal by JF.
Mike Loves contribution, Daybreak Over the Ocean is simply awful, no wonder it has been rejected multiple times since first being recorded in 1978, there's no way it fits into the collection and is definitely the weak point of the entire project! Although a mystery to Mike LOve, this songs illustrates why he only has 3 songwriting credits on the album. Even at his worst Brian Wilson can still out-strip Mike Love's contributions any day!
The album closes out with some stunning music with Strange World, From There to Back Again and Pacific Coast Highway, three songs that bring you beautifully back to classic Brian Wilson (almost), and leads to the final track Summer's Gone. Nothing could be more appropriate than Summer's Gone to finish off what is more than likely the last Beach Boys album ever, a gorgeously sad song that pulls at the heart-strings in much the same manner as the album opener Think About the Days.
The highlights here far outweigh the downers, and as I said, if Joe Thomas's production style mixed with Brian Wilson's incredible talents are something you like, then by all means this will be a very enjoyable album for you.
I recently watched a movie on Crackle that was produced around the year 2000 called the "Beach Boys an American Family". I got interested in the band again and discovered some of the tracks on this album on Youtube. I loved the title track and was nearly brought to tears by the final track "Summers Gone". I purchased the album and have listened to it over and over. There isn't a weak track on it. Nearly all the Beach Boys albums except "Pet Sounds" have some throw away filler tracks, but not this one. One of the other reviewers said the whole thing had a bitter sweet feel about it and I would agree with that but many of the first 8 tracks make me feel happy. They have those great Beach Boys harmonies. The title track is pure Beach Boys fun in the sun music with a hint of wistfulness and most of the first 8 tracks would fit that description. The "Private Life of Bill and Sue" doesn't really seem to fit in with the rest of the first 8 songs that seem to be thematic, however, it is one of the most enjoyable tracks on the album. It has has great vocal harmonies, catchy lyrics, a Caribbean flavor, a memorable melody, and is great fun. I think it would have been a big hit in the mid sixties. I would characterize the first 8 tracks as a celebration of the reunion of Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and early band member David Marks. The joy of the reunion comes through in the music. The last 4 songs invoke feelings in me that this was a onetime thing, the guys are older and this won't happen again, and the fun was good while it lasted but this was the last hurrah of the surviving members together. Each of the last four songs get increasingly more melancholy and the last one, "Summers Gone" is like Brian Wilson's valedictory message that the Beach Boys are over. As a man 65 years old it hits home to me. The end of pop music's boys of summer brings home the fact that those of us who enjoyed them are no longer kids and you can't go back, you can only remember. The last four songs make a nice coherent suite that work together almost perfectly. I consider the last four a song cycle like those of Schubert, Schumann, or Mahler. The cycle is not as ambitious in scope as those of the classical masters but I hear those 4 songs as a cycle and another Brian Wilson masterpiece. Incidentally the first song is a wordless choral number with piano solo that lasts about a minute and 20 seconds and leads perfectly into the title track. The Beach Boy harmony is in perfect form on the first track. The boys still had it even though all of them were close to 70 years old. I suspect some studio magic was involved in the making of the album. Probably a lot of Auto Tune was involved but nevertheless it is a wonderful album to listen to and I don't much care how it was produced to come off sounding so good.
The entire album is thematic in my mind. The first 8 songs are reminiscent of older men back together recapturing their youth for a brief moment and the last four are a recognition that it can't last. I have heard nearly all of the Beach Boys albums and I consider this number 2 after "Pet Sounds". The albums I don't own I have heard on Youtube and to me all but "Pet Sounds" are inferior to this one.
This may be a bit late to review a pop album that is 3 years old but I love it and I think all Beach Boys fans who haven't heard it will love. So I will add my review to 400 others.
