Good Edition, especially for free
2012年12月16日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This e-book is great. I was a little apprehensive as other reviewers had complained about the lack of the first two chapters. I did not have this problem, and I assume the issue has been resolved.
Wieland itself is an American Classic that too few people have read. Simultaneously America's first true gothic and containing insights on the construction of national identity, this novel is great for anyone interested in the early history of the nation or the establishment of national identity.
As for the edition, I wish it came with the Memoirs of Carwin, the Biloquist, but that doesn't diminish it much and I can't very well subtract a star for something that wasn't ever promised to me. 5/5.

Good story for an old book
2013年11月13日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
This is supposedly the oldest book published in America. It is written as a letter from Clara Wieland to an unknown person, and relates the mystery, suspense and horror of a few months in Clara's life in Pennslyvania. It uses plenty of $10 words throughout, and is written in a style current readers are not used to. Nevertheless, it is an intriguing story that follows Clara, her brother, his wife and children, his wife's brother, and for a short time a character, Carwin, recently arrived from England who will not speak of his background. All very mysterious to be sure. Whodunnit? I got this free on my Kindle.

Scary yet Half-Baked Classic
2014年2月19日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Wieland leads us to 18th century Pennsylvania and a great part of the novel is set on the Wieland family estate. Charles Brockden Brown created a grey and dreary setting that is perfect for what’s about to happen. While reading, I sometimes imagined that the Wieland estate could easily be the setting for a much happier story. The estate would feel completely different, by just changing the right words. But we don’t need that for Wieland ;) .
The events that take place are told by Clara Wieland, sister of Theodore Wieland. Clara is a very brave and smart woman. Sometimes her actions are so brave that they can be classified as plain stupid. When I gave it some thought though, I noticed that it was somehow strange that this brave woman falls gravely ill every time someone tells her something shocking. That doesn’t make sense. Nevertheless, I never doubted the female voice Brockden Brown used to tell this story.
Charles Brockden Brown starts his novel with an introduction of the characters and their background. It takes some time for the story to get going but when it finally does, it’s full of suspense (at least if you have no idea about the outcome). In the end, everything seems to be clear. However, when you think about it, a few things just don’t add up. Wieland is a novel for those who are bored with today’s thrillers and those who want to see how the American Gothic novel started out.

missing chpts
2011年2月12日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
I decided to get this ebook although another reviewer said it was missing the first two chapters. It is missing the first two chapters. However, it is pretty easy to find this book online. I plan on downloading those missing chapters to the kindle from another site so that I have the complete copy. Makes it a little more difficult. But still better than checking it out from the library.
