Celtic soul at its best!
What’s wrong with this picture？に次ぐBlue Noteレーベル経由のExile Record作品。前作Keep it simpleの路線踏襲であるがボーカルの力まなさが前作に比較し、良い雰囲気を醸し出している。録音がVanの故郷のベルファストと云うことがリラックスした雰囲気を作り上げているのだろうと想像してしまう。Too long in exileからClose enough for jazzをボーカル入りで持ってきたもの以外は全て書き下ろしの新作。
多くのベテランミュージシャンが新作を発表する際に惰性を感じることが多いが、Vanは今回も彼の真骨頂Celtic Soulをさらなる高みへと昇華させている。彼にしかできない名人芸。手放しに名作であり、個人的な２０１２のベストアルバム確定。近寄りがたさはあると思うが、すべての音楽好きにに推薦したい。

完璧です。
極上のVan Morrison流ソウルミュージックを堪能出来る名盤、音楽を好きで良かったと思える素晴らしい作品だ。
匠、ベテラン、ソウルマスターだからこそ出来るこの力の抜き具合といい、唯一無二のボーカルといい、楽曲のレベルの高さといい、全てにおいて一流。
ホーン、ピアノ、そして何と言ってもVanのボーカルを軸としたサウンド・・・ジャズ、ブルース、アイリッシュ、様々な色が至極ナチュラルに重なる奥行きあるこれら音のかたまりは、人の手だからこそ生み出される抜群の色気にて埋め尽くされている。
全体に流れるリラックスしながらも溢れ出る音の質の高さと、程よく揺れて往く、極上のスィング感に酔いしれる。
貫禄と余裕、凄い。

　前作から4年ぶり、待望の新作だが、これは久々の快作と言っていい。ここ10年ぐらいのヴァンはブルース的な曲作りにどっぷりはまっている感があるが、前作『Keep It Simple』はそれがややマンネリ化しているように思えて、個人的にはあまり面白くなかった。この新作もブルース的な曲作りという基本軸は変らないものの、バックの演奏をよりシンプルにすることで（曲によっては音がスカスカのように思えるほど）ヴァンのボーカルをよりいっそう際立たせることに成功している。ヴァン・モリソンのアルバムにリスナーが求めるのは何といってもヴァンのボーカルを堪能することであるから、このシンプルなアレンジは正しい方向性であると言えるだろう。
　アルバムの中の白眉は終盤のやや長い2曲「If In Money We Trust」「Pagan Heart」だろう。この2曲は曲の終盤になるにしたがってヴァンお得意の即興性の高いボーカルになっていき、それに呼応してバックの演奏が小さくなっていく。その音の隙間からヴァンの息遣いまで聞こえてくるようだ。
　オープニングを飾る「Open The Door (To Your Heart）」のさりげなさも心地いいし、「Goin' Down To Monte Carlo」のやや長いアウトロ、以前のアルバムにもインストで収録された曲を今度はボーカル入りで再演した「Close Enough For Jazz」の長いイントロも楽しい。
　バックの音がシンプルだからそう感じるのだろうが、全体的にピンと張った細い糸の上をゆっくりと歩いているような感じであり、それでいながらベテランならではのリラックスしたムードもある。何度も繰り返しじっくり味わいたいアルバムだ。

ヴァン・モリソン２０１２年作。
CDのみでアナログ盤は発売されませんでしたが、
「Back On Top」みたいに、今後アナログも出るかもね！

これは１９９０年代から始まってしまう
「基本的に同じようなアルバム」の内の１枚です。

もちろんアルバム毎に演奏者も違うし、
ブルース色が強いだとか、ジャズ色が強いだとか、トラッド色が強いだとかあるけれど、
基本的に同じようなアルバム・シリーズは何が同じかというと、
楽曲のメロディーやコード進行のパターンが同じようなヤツばっかり並んでいて、
またか・・・別のアルバムにもこんな曲なかったっけ？・・・となります。

だから基本的に同じようなアルバム・シリーズは相当良い曲が数曲無いと、
ああ、また一緒ね・・・となります。
また一緒なので安心して聴けるというのもありますけど・・・。

他の方も書いていますが、アルバムのハイライトは
スリリングでグイグイ引き込まれる「If In Money We Trust」と「Pagan Heart」。
ただ、CDで１曲目から順番に聴いていくと４０分近く聴いたあとに
この長尺曲２連発は、けっこうキツくて、
無駄に収録時間長過ぎな、残念なアルバムなのです。

駄作です。タイトルが大げさなんで、期待ハズレでした。気まぐれでアルバムを作るヴァンらしい、失敗作ですね。サウンドが横道にそれています。実力はこんなものじゃないんですけど。

Born to Sing: No Plan B is the first original CD from Van the man since 2008's Keep It Simple, and it has been well worth the wait.
This album is a superb mixture of soul, jazz, blues and rock. The instrumentation is very sparse, tasteful and well recorded.
The main theme of the songs is based on the wisdom Van has gained from his years in the music business. They centre on the perils of success, anti materialism and the fight to maintain your soul in spite of it all.
Morrison's voice, with it's unique tone and phrasing, is in fine form.
The solos are mostly horns and keyboards although there are a couple of very nice guitar solos.
Overall, an excellent album.

I listened to this recording several times while driving through New England recently. It immediately caught my attention for several reasons. First, I did not hear any synthesizers. Second, the CD contains real liner notes, prepared by respected writers. Third, the musicians, including Morrison on saxophone and piano, perform very well as a unit. Indeed, when Morrison sings, he supports the band; not the opposite, which often is the case for vocalists who somehow dominate the instruments with their voices. Finally, and this is a basic comment, the music just sounds real good. It is enjoyable and well presented. In short, this is, in my view, Morrison's best recording since "The Healing Game."

Three tracks stand out for different reasons. While I highlight these tracks, this CD includes a collection of superior recordings.

The best recording on the CD is "Goin' Down to Monte Carlo." It starts with rythmns that sound like pre-reggae Caribbean music. The lyrics portray an intrigue with life in Southern France -- Nice and Monaco. The messages reminded me of recent trips to this part of the world and the peace one can experience in this region at the right time of year. Morrison sounds like he really enjoyed singing this song. When he stops singing, this band leader lets the band take over. Much like a live performance, this studio recording departs from recent musical structures -- the musicians, with the support of their leader, individually display their talents. Relieved of the threat of the synthesizer and the pressure of time limitations, these musicans show their craft with abandon -- they truly jam. Their sound is sweet and cohesive, and it is wildly moving to hear the sound of a trombone in a modern jazz, R&B or pop recording. As a ranking member of the global music community, Morrison, because of his status with the record label, made a wise election to dedicate over eight minutes to this track. The sound is, in totality, masterful.

The first track is "Open the Door." This is a spirited song. It was a good decision to make this the first track. Simply put, it is a happy song about the writer's wish that someone open the door to her heart and soul. When I heard it, I thought about similar pleas made by Morrison in his lyrical masterpiece "Wild Honey," where he romantically proclaimed that his heart "beats just for you." In short, "Open the Door" is a light love song. Unlike most love songs, it will not support a slow dance. Its messages mirror Smokey Robinson's with a more upbeat tempo than those that characterize this Motown artist. It is not a slow jam.

"If in Money We Trust" is a great musical arrangement. It starts with a nice, delicate bass line. The piano follows, and we then hear -- we enjoy -- the trombone sound again. Morrison gives his band many opportunties to show their talents. Like any leader, he steps aside and lets his team members show their talents. This track features masterful brief saxophone, trombone and piano solos. As noted above, the vocals accent the core music; the musicicans do not support the vocalist here.

"If in Money We Trust" will generate some controversy. I suspect many religious groups and some individuals will complain about lyrics that repeatedly ask, "Where's God?" (They would proclaim that God is everywhere.) These folks also may complain that the statement -- "When God is dead" -- is not conceivable and never will occur. Nevertheless, while the lyrics are distracting and may generate some controversy, the music -- the sound -- is tremendous. Like track two -- "Goin' Down to Monte Carlo" -- this track runs over eight minutes. While listening to it, I visualize Morrison actually stepping aside yielding to and genuinely appreciating the members of his band.

"Close Enough for Jazz" basically is an instrumental arrangement. It includes some lyrics that present like an afterthought. This really is an arrangement that features the musicians. Nice sounds.

In closing, it has been years since I heard a vocal recording that genuinely featured the acoustic musicians. As I reflect on this recording and the length of some of the tracks, I am reminded of the artistry of Isaac Hayes. This musical legend often produced long tracks that featured the band and included his vocals only to reinforce the instrumental musicians. I am delighted that this recording resurrected in my mind memories of great musicians like Robinson and Hayes. Morrison ranks as a bona fide member of this class of distinguished musicians.

Je ne vous ferai pas l'affront de vous dire quel numéro porte cet album dans la discographie pléthorique de Vab Morrison qui s'étend sur un demi siècle depuis ses débuts victorieux avec les Them...
Sachez seulement que ce superbe dernier opus de 2013 est une vraie merveille qui réconciliera tous les fans de l'irlandais.Pourquoi? Eh bien parce-que tous les ingrédients sont là : d'abord l'inspiration pour des compos flamboyantes irriguées de soul, blues,,jazz et rock à la sauce de Van, ensuite ce feeling cette émotion qu'il fait si bien passer et qui sont inimitables.
Prenez juste pour le fun les 3 derniers morceaux et vous avez tout Van : un soul funky racé, un blues qui rappelle sa connivence et sa complicité avec le grand John Lee Hooker et enfin le dernier qu'on dirait issu des sessions de Tupelo Honey ....allez achetez foncez c'est fabuleux un type pareil!

Nacido Para Cantar. Tres palabras. Seis, si añadimos lo de Sin Plan B. Pues claro que has nacido para esto, Van, y causa desazón pensar que te lo has estado pensando estos últimos cuatro años. Muchos sabemos que para eso estás aquí. Para cantar, para la música, para conmovernos, para irritarnos, para hacernos llorar, para esperarte, añorarte, anhelarte, arte, arte, arte…
Ha sido una larguísima espera desde Keep it Simple, que salió el día de San Patricio de 2008, hasta Born To Sing, que vio la luz en 2012. Nunca, en más de cuarenta años sobre las tablas, se había dado un paréntesis tan dilatado para conocer material nuevo del artista.
Los músicos reunidos para la ocasión han sido Paul Moran (al órgano Hammond, otras teclas y piano); Alistair White (trombón y dos años junto a Van); Christopher White (saxo tenor, clarinete y otro par de años con Van); Dave Keary (guitarra); Paul Moore (bajo, el único repetidor junto a Van Morrison del disco Keep it Simple), y Jeff Lardner (batería). Hace poco el genio confesó en una entrevista que le resultaba muy difícil encontrar músicos capaces de adaptarse a sus continuos cambios. Se juntaron en Belfast, su ciudad natal, a finales de 2011, y parieron este disco.
Vuelve a Blue Note, por segunda vez, tras What's Wrong With This Picture? Cuenta Van The Man que una de las auténticas razones de su regreso al sello es que Don Was asumió la presidencia recientemente. El disco vuelve a dar una vuelta de tuerca más, tantas veces repetida, hacia el jazz y los aledaños del blues. El viejo jazz y el viejo blues, cabe añadir. Yo diría que es un nuevo intento de regresar a la música que salía del tocadiscos de su padre, un viaje en el que se embarcó desde muy niño para preguntarse desde entonces si ha nacido para esto o para otra cosa. Los amantes del género aprecian más este disco que los cercanos al soul. La revista Mojo (por cierto, la entrevista publicada en el número de noviembre es de las mejores que nunca he leído) considera que es “un disco excepcionalmente bueno”.
