　リアルタイムでこのバンドを聴いた身として書く。実はこの後の「ミーンタイム」がHELMETを初めて聞いたアルバム。でも専門誌の評価と違い、妙におとなしく、整理されすぎた感じで面白くなかった。「なんだよ～～全然ノレナイじゃん・・・・！」んで、このアルバムを見つけて購入し、聞く前は全然期待していなかった。どうせ過大評価・・・・・えええええええええ？？？？カッコえええじゃん！！！！どうしてこれがああなっちゃうの？？？てな感じですわ。今となっては「ミーンタイム」以降のHELMETもそれなりに魅力があると思います。が、全然別のバンド、と言わざるをえないです。
　とにかく熱量、勢いというものが全然違う。「ミーンタイム」以降は計算づくのハードさ、ヘヴィさを追求している（で、それはそれで面白い）が、ここでは考えるより先に身体が動いちゃってる感じ。一言で言うと「八方破れ」。ギターも弾くというより、掻き散らかす、ぶっ叩く、という風で、ハードコアパンク寄り。きっちり計算されたヘヴィな爆音を鳴らすメタル寄りではありません（ちなみにワタシはこういう音も好物）。だから人によっては全然ダメ、という音ですね。
　ただ、個人的には大傑作で、未だによく聴くブツです。

後のグランジとしての知名度が高いのでしょうけど、矢張り、此奴らの十八番はこのジャンクの如くノコギリギターをザクザクと切り刻むこのStrap it onでしょう。

MEANTIME以降はほぼヘヴィネス化しましたが、この頃の此奴らは必見。 Born Annoyingと共に聴く事をおすすめします。
本当にこの頃はハードコア色が有り、個人的には一番最高の時期だったのではないかと思われます。然し、何故にこのアルバムだけこんなに隠れてしまっているのだろう？　不思議だ。

オーヴァーレベル気味な激しいギターと変拍子。
そしてがなりたてるボーカル。
どこかスカスカで、シンプルでありながらしかしこれ程力強いバンドサウンドはそうあるものではないだろう。
ジャンルに当てはめるならグランジという事になるのだろうがそんな事は気にせず、
単純にカッコいいギターサウンドを求めている人間は是非聴いて欲しい。

私にはインディ信仰なんてありません。ヘルメットはＪＵＮＫと呼ばれたいわゆるグランジなんて呼び名のなかった時代に必然をもって生まれたAMPHETAMINE REPTILEから1ST「STRAP IT ON」とシングル集「BORN ANNOYING」を残し、メジャーに行きました。その後の衰退ぶりは思い出すのも腹立たしく、雑誌などはアルバムが出るごとに「これぞ最高作」なんていい加減なレビューをしていたのを覚えています。ちなみにメジャー1枚目の「MEANTIME」では1曲目が一番好きなのですが、それでもインディー時代に比較するといまいち鋭さがありません。まだ手に入るようなのでメジャー時代しか聴いたことのない人はこの1枚を是非手に入れて下さい。

ヘルメットというと、この後にメジャーから出た『ミーンタイム』が有名だと思うのですが、この作品も良いですよ。
かなりラウドで、良くも悪くも初期っぽくて荒々しいです。
中心人物ペイジ・ハミルトンがジャズ、クラシックなどの音楽教育を受けているという話は結構有名で、ヘルメットの作品の根底に流れる完璧なほどのバンドアンサンブルにもその影響が出てると思います。
40、50分聴いていて、かなり疲れる(もちろん退屈なわけじゃないですよ)のも、きちんとした音楽的素養のうえで計算されているからかなぁ。
これ以後の、アメリカのへヴィネスに決定的打撃を与えることになるヘルメットですが、なぜか日本では評価、知名度ともにそれほど高くない気がして残念です。

Helmet were the band that record labels battled over in the early '90s, just before Nirvana broke through in 1991. The year before, however, the NYC band released this jagged gem on indie label Amphetamine Reptile. They were thought of as being the vanguard of a new wave of heavy rock, and it's easy to tell why. The punishing riffs of "Repetition", "Rude", "Bad Mood", "Blacktop", and others mirror what metal bands like Pantera would do on their future records. You can call Helmet metal, but they can also be looped into the hardcore tent due to the brevity and simplicity of the tunes, and the look of the band. None of the members sported long hair by the time they broke through on radio and MTV. I remember that being a big thing to me at the time. Things were changing; you didn't have to look like Axl Rose to be in a band. This is an essential slice of '90s alternative rock that pointed the way heavy rock was going to sound from 1990 on.

...des so einzigartigen Helmet- Stils und zugleich eine Steilvorlage für die damalige New Yorker Hardcore-Szene, mutig voran zu preschen und Gitarren zu schrubben, bis die Fingerkuppen bluten!
Dieses Album ist so roh und ungeschliffen, wie Metallicas "St.Anger" sein wollte, so energiegeladen, wie Biohazard gerne wären und war damals im Stil so neuartig und sensationell, dass Helmet nach diesem Album einen Major Deal einheimsen konnten. Natürlich ist das so entstandene "Meantime" geschliffener, ausgewogener und markant. Aber "Strap it On" ist das erste Album der vier New Yorker um den Bandkopf und studierten Jazzgitarristen Page Hamilton. Die Ursuppe, in der bereits alle Zutaten des einzigartigen, rifforientierten Helmet Sounds vorhanden waren- nur halt eben noch nicht in einer solchen Symbiose wie auf "Meantime" oder "Aftertaste". Genau DAS ist dann auch der Reiz von "Strap it On": Brutal, roh, eckig, sperrig, kantig, ein Album wie rausgerotzt und dabei so authentisch und lebensnah wie der Mundgeruch beim morgendlichen Aufwachen! Insofern kann ich auch keine Anspieltipps geben, weil das gute Stück als gesamtwerk wirkt. Neun Lieder, kein Schnörkel, fertig aus. Fünf Sterne!

I love Helmet! Even though I only owned (previous to purchasing this) ‘Meantime’ and ‘Betty,’ they’re a band I often revisit and are never too far away from my CD player (yeah, I’m old...).
I decided I was going to give their original 4 album run a go and decided on this one before ‘Aftertaste’ due to the latter being pretty expensive and rare to find at a reasonable price at present, and I was curious to hear the original ‘Sinatra’ having already heard the (I think) superior Deftones cover.
The album is mostly very good, there’s not really anything that stands out as being ‘bad’ in any sense, when you compare it to the two albums that came afterwards though...it’s vastly inferior. ‘Sinatra’ is still the standout track, but all the songs are strong enough and good, there are no duds here.
On the negative side of things : the production is pretty thin, more akin to an early 80’s DIY hardcore band record than an early 90’s metal act, the mix is a little iffy and in general the songs are slightly repetitive and certainly not as finely crafted and slick as ‘Meantime’, but of course, it’s their first album.
‘Strap It On’ proved to be a highly original (and heavily plagiarised) blueprint merging metal, hardcore, drop d tuning, weird time signatures and a lot of stop/start riffs that breathe, which Nu Metal in particular copied but never quite succeeded in improving or even matching in my opinion.
If you’re a fan, an essential purchase and an interesting snapshot of a great band finding their feet, if you’re not try the next three albums first (‘Meantime,’ ‘Betty’ and ‘Aftertaste’).

ORG did a tremendous job with this vinyl release. Already a classic, "Strap It On" has unfortunately suffered from a lackluster recording. Everything has been adjusted accordingly as Page's vocals and riffs along with the rhythm of John, Pete, and Henry now all shine through tightly during the nine tracks.

It's loud, it's ugly, it's Helmet. And now their debut album sounds better than ever.
