個人的な話から入って申し訳ないが、ぼくはこの作品を発売日前に予約注文していたので、比較的早く聴いたリスナーの一人だと思う。
ノエルギャラガーのツアーに同行するなどのニュースを聞いて、海外の番組に出演した時の映像もチェックしていたのでその実力も早いうちに知っていた。
アルバムが届き、もちろん一曲一曲の完成度の高さ、アルバム全体としての完成度の高さどちらにもびっくりしたのだけれど、なぜかレビューは書きたいのに書けなかった。

しかし、昨日やっとその謎が解け、ぼくはこうしてレビューを書いている。

なぜ、ぼくはアルバムを聴き、その実力を知っていながらレビューを書けなかったのか？
それは、本物を見ていなかったからである。

昨日ぼくは、渋谷クワトロで行われたアコースティックショーケースを観に行ってきた。
バックアップのバンドはおらず、そこで観たのは一人の少年の歌声と、彼が奏でるギターのみ。

小柄の体のどこから出ているのかわからないほどの声量。時に優しく、時に激しい音色を奏でるギターと彼のストローク。
それを、ぼくも含めた観客は見ることができた。本物はすごかった。

もともと、アルバムに収録されている演奏もシンプルなものであるが、今ライブで、シンプルなセットで（もちろんレコーディング以上の）これだけパワフルなパフォーマンスをできるアーティストがどれだけいよう。

ボブディランの再来ともいわれる彼。
ギター一本で世界と対峙するその姿勢は、確かにディランのそれと同じである。
しかし、ディランが見る世界とジェイクの目に映る世界は違うはずだ。（眠そうに半開きの目だけど、彼は真剣に世界を見ている。）

今後も僕たちは彼の作品に期待できるだろう。

嗚呼、素晴らしい。思わず感嘆が漏れる。本当に、「Two Fingers」をラジオで聴いたときは、まさかまだ10代だとは考えもしなかった。そんな古きよきギターロックを現在進行形で響かせる、英国期待の新星、ジェイク・バグのデビューアルバム。

かき鳴らされるギターは無骨な雰囲気もありつつ、それでいて洗練された音の流れ。シンプルで力強くて、ときどき脆い。歌声も、青臭い歌詞の世界観も良い。
そしてなんといっても、メロディーが素晴らしい！懐かしく、人懐っこい、素直なメロディー。メジャーコードは温かく、マイナーなアルペジオさえ優しく心をなぜてくれる。もはやノイズさえ心地良い。このメロディーだけで堪らないものがある。
まずはどの曲でもいい。一度視聴してもらえれば、この感動を共有できるはず。

小細工などない、在りのままの音楽。こんな素晴らしいアーティストが、この時代に現れた奇跡に立ち会えたことと、彼の音楽史をこれからリアルタイムで追っていけることが、とても嬉しい。
これはきっと半世紀経っても聴き続けている。そう予感させてくれる大器の名盤。

彼の曲をラジオで初めて聴いた時、６０年代のアーティストかな〜と思いました。
アコースティックギター主体の、どこかカントリーのようなフォークのような曲調、そしてかなり独特な歌い方、まさに若き日のボブ・ディランを彷彿とさせました。
一聴惚れでした。
調べると若干１８歳の少年であり、更に衝撃を受けました。
この時代に彼ようなシンガーは非常に稀であり、大変貴重な存在であると感じています。
来年グラミー賞の主要部門を受賞していても不思議ではありません。

ぜひ、今のうちから注目しておきましょう。
将来が非常に楽しみです。

ライブでも1曲めに演奏されることが多く、Jake好きなら聴きなれているであろう
"Kentucky"

この曲は1stアルバムのオリジナルトラックには収録されていなかった。
そうとしらず私は輸入盤を購入してしまいました。

私と同じ目に会いたくない人は、ボーナストラックでKentuckyが収録されている日本盤を買いましょう。

特に難しいことをやらずに、

短尺な曲でまとめられ曲調といい懐かしさを感じます。
歌声にはそのまま若さが現れてはいますが、只者では無い。
そのスタイルからかボブ・ディランとかを連想してしまいます。
サマーソニックでも観てきましたが、リードギターも流暢でLiveもしっかりしています。
次作も必須ですね！

ジェイク・バグを知らない人には、やはりこのファーストアルバムを聴いてほしい。

冷めた目つきのイギリス少年。
デビューアルバムとは思えない渋さ。
だけど、若さや新しさも曲からにじみ出ている。
このアルバムで世界的に有名になったけれど、全く調子に乗る様子がない。
ひたすら曲を作り、歌い続ける。世界をめぐる。
どうしてここまでストイックなんだろう。

その佇まいに、しびれます。

Le recensioni positive sono già così numerose che non mi resterebbe altro che dire: è un disco da acquistare al volo! Oppure posso unirmi anch’io al gioco delle ascendenze vocali e dei riferimenti musicali per questo nuovo talento che posa nelle foto con aria da adolescente duro e consapevole dei propri mezzi (spettacolari le due nel libretto, frammischiate ai testi, con la sigaretta tra le dita!) Alla voce mi sembra una via di mezzo tra Paolo Nutini e Noel Gallagher. Grande varietà di ispirazione nello stile e molta retro-mania (inconsapevole o voluta, sarebbe già un bel dibattito). Lightning Bolt in apertura sembra Woody Guthrie, ma quello rifatto da Dylan. Two Fingers subito dopo ci porta verso il pop degli anni settanta (Hollies, T.Rex?) Di nuovo Dylan per Taste It, Seen It All e soprattutto Trouble Town. E avanti così, nel più divertente e arbitrario dei modi, fino a trovarci l’eco di John Denver in Country Song e in Broken (bellissima !) quella di Simon & Garfunkel in Simple As This o di James Taylor in Someplace . Tutte valutazioni assolutamente personali che altri potrebbero contraddire tale è la gamma dei possibili richiami/riferimenti. E tutte piacevoli, perché questo è quel che conta per segnalare e acquistare un disco. Però non chiediamogli di essere il nuovo Bob Dylan o chissà chi altro. Anche Dylan al primo disco pensava di essere Woody e poi diventò Dylan. Così per Jake Bugg, se son rose …. Intanto godiamoci quest'opera prima: se non è un esordio pentastellare questo, quale altro?

Perhaps it's my age or perhaps it's the times but Bugg has come up with something that's been missing for 30 years in a package that others just might get. Simply put, he writes his own music in a way that is both poetic and accessible. There are flaws here and there in the production of the album but one comes to accept and even enjoy them with repeated listening. It all seems to make sense. Considering his age, Bugg has an uncanny sense of his world and is able to convey that through lyric and music. At times, one has to chuckle at the, sometimes, jaded life he presents when we know he's only 19 years old - but, once again, he manages to pull it off. On the other hand, there are 19 year olds who have "seen it all".

As for musicianship, he's truly fine. If you listen to earlier recordings, he sometimes (rarely) has timing issues and pitch problems but those have evaporated in the short time (a year and a half) he's catapulted from total unknown to shooting star. He is one of the most musical people recording today. His melodic sense is enchanting. People like to say he has a gravely voice and that both his voice and songs are reminiscent of a young Bob Dylan. Quite a compliment but I think I actually like him better than Dylan and his songs make more sense. His voice isn't gravely either - it's just different. At times it's nasally but he's really studied it and his voice is unmistakable, a very unique signature without any pretense.

He's pure and simple, extremely melodic as well as an adept player. Most of all, he sings from the heart where we discover his tenderness, vulnerability and honesty. Our world has become jaded and too complicated a place where savoring a song that might touch your heart has seemingly gone by the wayside. There is nothing shallow about Jake Bugg.

I notice previous reviewers confessing to ages of 48 and 42 - well, I'm 65 and Jake Bugg has rocketed straight into my top 10 all time favourite singers. What is it about the age profile of his fans 48/42/65 ??!! Is he getting the young music lovers too - I presume so; I certainly hope so. He must be!!

I first saw Jake Bugg singing "Broken" on the Graham Norton show earlier this year and was mesmerised, stunned. After that I didn't see, hear or think of him again until a couple of weeks ago when I saw him singing "Song About Love" (from his upcoming 2nd album) on Jools Holland. Again, I was amazed at how powerful he was. So I decided to look further and did some research on You Tube where there are several different recordings of "Broken" and one of "Country Song" and some others - all of which are wonderful. There is one particular video on "VEVO" of him singing "Broken" in an American bar / restaurant, obviously a fully staged and choreographed video, but it is still extraordinarily moving. I urge anyone who hasn't already seen it to look at it as soon as possible.

So, is he good? Well, obviously I think so. The only other two times I remember being so instantly transfixed on hearing an artist for the first time was when I heard Janis Ian singing "Jesse" and "At Seventeen" on the Shirley Bassey TV show in 1976 (I told you I was 65!!) and then the first time I heard Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" around the same time - ahhh, the 70's was a pretty good decade for music! Of course there have been many more wonderful artists since then, and before, but those two moments were special for me, and hearing Jake Bugg singing "Broken" and "Country Song" for the first time were equally thunderbolt moments.

So, I bought the CD which arrived from Amazon 3 days ago and is now playing all the time, and I mean all the time: in the house, on the computer, on my iPod and on the car stereo. My wife loves him too and she is very serious about her music. And I agree with other reviewers, a lot of this is derivative, but as someone else said, who isn't? and who cares? He is superb. Full stop. And he is only 19!!!! My God! - he wrote "Country Song" when he was 16 !!!!! We are witnessing the start of someone who will be as famous and as important to music as Dylan, and he is just as talented.
