Great old style blue grass music. Hartford's laconic style of singing sounds just right and he's a magnificent banjo player with a real feel for this sound. This is very early Hartford, very nicely remastered, and he only gets better as time goes by. Have a listen to Gum Tree Shoe and the more confident and accomplished John dazzles.

A welcome reissue of two of the most influential bluegrass albums ever but ever recorded. In 1971 and 1972 young 'un's like Sam Bush and Tim O'Brien learned lick after lick and trick after trick from these recordings and you can hear why and how. Vassar Clements on fiddle, Tut Taylor on dobro, Norman Blake (from the Johnny Cash band, not the youngster from Teenage Fanclub) on guitar, Randy Scruggs on bass (!) and Hartford on banjo and whatever else he fancied combined to make a band like no others. With David Bromberg producing they cut live as possible, not hearing a single playback until the album was sequenced and mixed! It was the beginning of what is now referred to as Newgrass. And new it was. If you like acoustic folk music, bluegrass, acoustic country pickin', Americana, alt-country or simply having a good time then this is for you. Go buy. Hartford was a legend.
