I was one of those folks fortunate to enjoy knocking back pints of Courage down the Croydon market at the Dog and Bull while Major Surgery was playing. It was around 1974-75, and it was a major event for me every week. It was the real deal in a small, dark and smoky place and I remember more and more people adding to the crowd every week. This was an excellent slice of the jazz-rock going around at that time, and Don Weller and band were just amazing! I was delighted and surprised to find this CD, and it brings it all back... even though I can't get a pint of Courage around here.

I used to go to see Major Surgery gig every week in Croydon in I think 1971 or 72. Although I have some more recent Don Weller on vinyl I had never been able to find recorded work of this group of the '70s. Now I have and it is a super reminder not only of a favourite band of mine but also just how wonderful pub live music was in those days. It was way way pre Simon Cowell Karaoke Crap of course. I am indebted to the producer for re-issuing The First Cut. It is at present and will for along time be my most played CD. The fusion of Jazz and Rock was and remains daring and exciting.
This album is such a joy to listen to from start to finish . Musicians playing off each other and producing just the right mix of jazz, rock, melody and repetitive honking! It really works for me
