The Cold Equations (English Edition) Kindle版
THE UNIVERSE DOESN'T CARE
A pilot is on an emergency mission to a planet whose colony is doomed if he doesn't get there fast. He has just enough fuel to reach the planet—then he finds that he has a stowaway, a young girl wanting to be with her brother on the colony. If the pilot spaces the girl, the ship will barely make it to the planet. If he does not, the ship will crash and both of them as well as the colony will die. What will he do This story rocked science fiction when it first appeared.
Also in this volume is Godwin's long-unavailable novel The Survivors, which poses another problem in survival: If hostile aliens have marooned you and hundreds of other people on a nearly uninhabitable planet, how do you not only manage to endure, but to get revenge as well
This is a massive volume by a master of science fiction adventure, with added dimensions of speculation and cold, hard realism.
At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (DRM Rights Management).

A recent Netflix film brought this to my attention and I am glad it did. The whole thing adds an edge to SF fiction kind of missing today. Not all the stories are bangers, but all bring you into their little worlds and it isn't difficult to identify with the characters.
I do feel it is important to remember how long ago it was written, as the futuristic aspects seem dated, but nonetheless this was a pleasant read well worth the price of entry.

Fantastic stories by a great writer
Do not be put off by the sexist 70s cover of this book. Nowhere in the stories is there a scantily clad warrior woman. Instead I enjoyed all of the stories which are well written, suspenseful with a very human element. I originally read the short novel, "Survivors" in another compilation of sci fi stories, and bought this book as a result. Tom Godwin portrays his worlds as stark and unforgiving frontiers, and his characters as pioneers. Each story draws the reader in, and has a moral dilemma at it's core. I really enjoyed this book, and would highly recommend it.

A 40 Year Old Nightmare
I discovered this book in the early 1960's at the time I was mostly sustaining myself on Heinlein and his more upbeat proliferation of classic science fiction. The centerpiece of "Cold Equations" is actually not the title work, but the included novel "The Survivors", included in this volume of Godwin's works. Known in the early 60's as "Space Prison", this novel relates the 200 year long saga of a group of humans relegated to a planet after being attacked by barbarians during a space journey near the planet Ragnarok. Fully half of the thousands of colonists aboard this ship are relegated to this planet, declared uninhabitable by prior explorers (the other half is taken into slavery). Ragnarok is noted for its 1.5 G gravity, and the collection of ferocious beasts inhabiting it. On the first night alone, 200 of the colonists are killed. At the low point, the colony is reduced to only 49 individuals, before the group finally learns to adapt to the harsh conditions and to thrive and start to grow in numbers again.
The novel is a mixture of desperation and total hopelessness coupled with incredible yet believable examples of humankind's efforts to survive and succeed under incredible adversity. The story is very haunting, and finally ends when descendants of the original group of colonists escape from the planet.
I can think of only a handful of science fiction books that have stayed with me 40 years later after only a single reading, and I have occasionally looked for a copy, only finding old collectibles as a source. I could not have been more pleased when I found it had finally been reprinted only last month: I ordered it on the spot and await reading it again with great anticipation and sharing it with my 17 year old son.

impressive sci-fi stories
“The Survivors” was amazing, not only as sci-fi, but as a testament to the survival instinct gene which we carry. A solid base, upon which is built, layer upon layer, of amazement, and of hope. Other stories were equally memorable. I was not that wowed by “The Cold Equations”. It mostly made me uncomfortable.

Good imaginative stories

It was worth purchasing this collection for "The Survivors" and "The Cold Equation" stories which are both excellent with plenty of suspense and drama. The other stories in this collection were OK but I did not feel they were quite so imaginative.
Although a bit drawn out in places Tom Godwin has the ability to fully immerse the reader in his stories, though this does not always work.
