Nightmare Ending is the first proper Eluvium album released since 2010's Similes, the unexpectedly vocal-heavy ambient-pop record that simultaneously delighted and confounded longtime fans. But the Nightmare Ending story actually began years earlier, as it was intended to be the follow-up to the watershed album, Copia. Conceived as a way of helping loosen his self imposed ideals of perfection, Cooper labeled each Nightmare Ending track as either a "dream," or an "imperfection" a way of differentiating the philosophical concept of "dream vs. Reality."

Eluvium's work is much the way Peter Gabriel said that he wanted his to be. He wanted his albums to be like issues of a magazine, with the same editor, and fans would just see what was in this "issue." Of course, Mr. Gabriel records too rarely for that. Eluvium, though, makes records that seem to me to be dedicated volumes, or themes. Each one is unified by a purpose or exploration. What the theme is is going to be one thing for the musician and another for the listener, and there won't be a correct answer, necessarily. One cannot even say that his work is "ambient" or "electronica." It is music that comes from the bar in "thought/feeling."

This double disk at least takes on board the overall world of the dreamscape, whether that is Jungian or simply the frustrated letting go that contemporary neuroscience says is going on. Either way, the inter-world of sensory stimulus and subconscious response, as well as the potential for meaning or measure there is underway, and this is a masterpiece.

I do not have a conclusion for this, because that would be beside the point. The music never, ever lets off or underperforms its purpose.

Eluvium (AKA Matthew Cooper) creates densely layered soundscapes that wash over you like waves and wind. To some it may sound like gales of white noise—his music isn't everyone's cup of tea. However if you spend some time with Nightmare Ending you'll begin to hear the order in what seems to be chaos. Eluvium is like Brian Eno's instrumental work only more guitar oriented and assertive. Play it loud!

Eluvium is elusive. This double CD is contemplative, some piano but primarily electronic. More structure and melody than most other stuff in this genre. W orth. Exploring, along the lines of Stars of the Lid, released a few years ago.
