This new edition of Alexander Miller’s highly readable introduction to contemporary metaethics provides a critical overview of the main arguments and themes in twentieth- and twenty-first-century contemporary metaethics. Miller traces the development of contemporary debates in metaethics from their beginnings in the work of G. E. Moore up to the most recent arguments between naturalism and non-naturalism, cognitivism and non-cognitivism.

From Moore’s attack on ethical naturalism, A. J. Ayer’s emotivism and Simon Blackburn’s quasi-realism to anti-realist and best opinion accounts of moral truth and the non-reductionist naturalism of the ‘Cornell realists’, this book addresses all the key theories and ideas in this field. As well as revisiting the whole terrain with revised and updated guides to further reading, Miller also introduces major new sections on the revolutionary fictionalism of Richard Joyce and the hermeneutic fictionalism of Mark Kalderon.

The new edition will continue to be essential reading for students, teachers and professional philosophers with an interest in contemporary metaethics.

The author approaches meta-ethics with notable biases. Instead of simply presenting the arguments of proponents of various meta-ethical theories and letting the reader evaluate the arguments, the author adds his own biased opinions and arguments, which aren’t necessarily even cogent.

The book is also tedious, frequently going off on detailed tangents apparently interesting to the author, but uninteresting and unnecessary to someone interested in an introduction to meta-ethics.

I highly recommend researching meta-ethics and the theories listed in the table of contents on the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy or the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. You’ll save the price of the book and get a clearer and far more objective understanding of meta-ethics without having to wade or skim through tedious tangents and the author’s often weak arguments.

Metaethik als Zweig der analytischen Philosophie ist in den letzten 30 Jahren nach einer vorübergehenden Ruhephase wieder zu einem intensiv diskutierten Gebiet mit einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Schulen und Argumenten geworden. Für alle Nicht-Spezialisten tut eine gelungene Überblicksdarstellung dringend Not. Dieses Buch hat seine Meriten, scheitert aber Ende, zumindest, wenn man eine solche Überblicksdarstellung zum (Wieder-)Einstieg sucht. Zwar greift Miller die zentralen Schulen vom Nonkognitivismus bis zu den verschiedenen Spielarten des Realismus auf, aber er verliert sich für meinen Geschmack immer wieder im Gestrüpp der Details. Die großen Linien gehen in, wie mir schien, mitunter recht sterilen Auseinandersetzungen verloren, warum das Ganze mit Blick auf zentrale philosophische Fragen überhaupt wichtig ist (und das sind am Ende doch wohl Fragen danach, wie wir uns und die Welt, in der wir leben, verstehen müssen, bzw. welche Konsequenzen daraus möglicherweise zu ziehen sind), gerät dabei immer wieder aus dem Fokus - ein Vorwurf, den man heute der analytischen Philosophie durchaus auch aus eigenen Reihen macht. So ging es mir z.B. im Kapitel zu McDowell. Interessant fand ich dagegen die Auseinandersetzung mit der Irrtumstheorie von Mackie und Joyce bzw. der Realismus-Variante von Railton.
Unterm Strich würde ich also eine eingeschränkte Empfehlung aussprechen, und zwar für alle, die sich schon ganz gut auskennen und eine Zusammenfassung plus weiterführender Kommentare brauchen.

I haven't read the entire thing yet, as I'm using it as a resource for a specific undergraduate essay on moral non-cognitivism, but thus far it seems very clear and is a helpful starting point.
