Le he descubierto hace muy poco a través de la radio. Lo primero que oí fue de su nuevo disco,al final y para empezar a escucharle decidí comprar este vinilo y a pesar del precio me ha sorprendido. Buena carátula e interior,el sonido de los vinilos es .....iba a decir una palabrota. Impresionante......!!!! Para oírlo con tiempo una y otra vez,vas descubriendo algo nuevo en cada escucha. Con el tiempo será como el vino bueno sin duda.

There's nothing in this CD that hasn't been done before. That being said, no one has ever pacakaged it together like this before. What do you get with this CD? An amalgam of all of the best parts of psychadelia blended with California rock. You can hear Spirt, the Grateful Dead bits of (Aoxomoxoa and Terrapin Station), CSN/Buffalo Springfield, and lots of Pink Floyd. "Love to Love" could be off of Ryan Adams' most recent CD, and is the only misfire - not because it isn't good, but because it doesn't fit the vibe of the rest of the CD.

What makes this mix of styles great is the consistent and masteful production. It sounds great and modern, but the songs could have been lifted from any time over the past 40 years - and the songs are GOOD! Wilson also plays most of the CD all by himself, like Todd Rundgren or Paul McCartney can do. There are some high-powered guests, though - you get David Crosby and Graham Nash doing harmonies on "Cecil Taylor", and a Benmont Tench (keyboardist for Tom Petty) shows up and jams.

A great CD, easily my favorite of 2014 so far, and I can't wait to listen to this outside on a warm, muggy summer night watching the stars.

Seit Anfang Jänner hab ich mich in dieses Album eingehört und mich davon verzaubern lassen und fühlte mich nun endlich bereit es gebührend zu rezensieren, nur um festzustellen dass William Kite mit seiner Rezension (unbedingt lesen!) bereits alles auf den Punkt gebracht hat - FANFARE ist auch für mich schon jetzt das Album des Jahres und ich bezweifle ernsthaft dass mir in den restlichen 11 Monaten noch etwas Gleichwertiges unterkommen wird.

Ich habe Jonathan Wilson 2011 im Vorprogramm von WILCO in München kennengelernt, und sein Song "Desert Raven" hatte sich sofort in meinen Gehörgängen festgesetzt woraufhin ich mir gleich vor Ort sein Debütalbum zulegte. Und während GENTLE SPIRIT ein hervorragendes & anspruchsvolles Album war, so war es doch nicht makellos. Einerseits waren da sperrige Oden wie "Natural Rhapsody" und mit "Woe is me" oder "Don't give your heart to a rambler" enthielt die Platte doch auch ein paar schwache Songs.

Dasselbe kann man über FANFARE wahrlich nicht behaupten. Bereits mit den ersten Klavierakkorden des Titelsongs zieht einen die Platte in ihren Bann und lässt einen bis zum Schluss nicht mehr los. Jeder Song ist eine wahre Schatzkiste, sei es aus musikalischen oder produktionstechnischen Gründen. Bei "Dear Friend" ist von einem sanften Eröffnungswalzer über einen jazzigen Mittelteil bis zu einem Lights-Out Gitarrenriff am Ende alles dabei. "Love to Love" ist einfacher gestrickt, der wohl eingängigste Song auf dem Album, eine Liebeserklärung an Los Angeles, die einen sofort dazu verleitet den nächsten Flug nach LAX zu buchen. "Moses Pain" ist ein wunderschöner Folkrock-Song mit Beteiligung von 2/5 der Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench. "Cecil Taylor" (mit Harmony-Vocals von Graham Nash & David Crosby) geht mit seinem sparsamen Gitarren- & Percussion-Einsatz ebenfalls unter die Haut. Nach gut einem Monat mit der Platte kann ich mit Überzeugung sagen: hier ist wirklich jeder Song ein Treffer! Auch bei der Auswahl von Coverversionen beweist Jonathan Wilson wieder ein sicheres Händchen: nach dem hervorragenden Gordon-Lightfoot-Cover auf GENTLE SPIRIT serviert er uns diesmal mit "Fazon" ein Stück der eher obskuren Band Sopwith Camel. Man lernt also musikalisch auch immer etwas dazu bei seinen Alben, und Fortführen von musikalischen Traditionen bzw. das Weitergeben alter Klassiker an die junge Generation ist Wilson auch ein besonderes Anliegen. Seine Songs bieten eine enorme Stilvielfalt und als renommierter Musikproduzent Analogfetischist weiss Jonathan Wilson sie auch ins rechte Licht zu rücken.

Da überrascht es auch nicht dass die Vinyl-Ausgabe mehr als ansprechend daherkommt: 2 massive, hellblaue Schallplatten mit 3 Songs pro Seite (wie gewohnt enden Wilson's Songs nur selten unter der 6-Minuten-Marke) in einem aufklappbaren Karton mit jeweils eigener Kartonhülle und ansprechendem Artwork (welches den aktuellen Trend zur Rückkehr der Schambehaarung bestätigt). Zusätzlich ist auch das komplette Album (inklusive einem Bonus Track!) auf CD beigelegt, bei aller Liebe zu Vintage-Sounds versteht es Jonathan Wilson also durchaus seine Musik auch gekonnt im Hier & Jetzt zu platzieren. Nicht falsch verstehen: FANFARE klingt gerade auf Vinyl fantastisch, aber die Möglichkeit das Album einfach mal vom Anfang bis zum Ende durchhören & geniessen zu können ohne 3x aufstehen und die Platten wechseln zu müssen hat auch etwas für sich! :)

du pur bonheur sur galette.

que dire de plus... écoutez et vous comprendrez.
cet album fait oublier les soucis du quotidien, c'est du bonheur pur et simple.

NB: vous avez remarqué le clin d'oeil à "echoes" sur la seconde partie instrumentale de "love strong"?????
le genre de truc qui fait se hérisser les poils.

From the very first minute of the title track, "Fanfare", you can tell that this is going to be a very special album indeed, as it introduces the album with an instrumental mixture reminiscent of Pink Floyd and The Eagles before exploding into a beautiful near-classical grandiose rock, resplendent with thundering, echo-laden toms and rich strings which are more Electric Light Orchestra than Crosby, Stills and Nash. It's majestic, astonishing, wonderful stuff. One thing is for sure, this second album is a different proposition than Wilson's excellent Laurel Canyon-influenced debut, "Gentle Spirit" (although the same influences are still very much present and correct) and whether you are open to a departure from that style or not will go a long way towards determining whether you will like this album or not.

I'm going to lay my cards on the table right away. I think this is a dazzling album and one of the very best albums I have heard all year. It is one of those records that demands your attention; you simply have to stop doing anything else and listen to it. One of those very special albums that very much deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the rock classics which have become household names. I'm not convinced that this will happen, as the general public's taste in music seems to be very different to mine these days, but the musicianship and creative vision on "Fanfare" is incredible, head and shoulders above some rather ordinary records by well-known names that most people seem to gush about. Had this album been released in the 1970s, exactly as it is, it would have been heralded as an important piece of work, I'm sure, but here we are in 2013 and, sadly, this beauty will only be heard by a relatively small amount of people worldwide.

There are so many excellent tracks on "Fanfare" that it is difficult to choose highlights or, indeed, favourites. It is probably best listening to it as a whole, rather than sampling individual tracks, that way you can appreciate the rich range of textures on offer here. I mentioned the magnificent title track, but virtually everything on offer here is terrific and is evidently influenced by the very best music of the seventies. "Future Vision", for example, is a superb Lennonesque ballad which almost purposely samples the different aspects of the former Beatle's solo career, including a gorgeously dirty guitar solo. The epic "Moses Pain" reminds me of Elton John's brilliant "Levon" to start with, but then expands into a tumbling country track which features not one, but two, sublime piano solos. The guitar work in "Dear Friend" is a revelation, the lyrics in the David Crosby and Graham Nash-backed piece of acoustic perfection "Cecil Taylor" dreamy and other-worldly, the mesmerising "Illumination" slowly unfolds into a stunning piece of psychedelic rock and "Lovestrong", part Elton John, part Pink Floyd, is simply magnificent. Even the sole cover, "Fazon", fits in perfectly with the rest of the album and has a scintillating saxophone solo. I could go on, but I won't. Each song has something noteworthy about it and this is a brief review, not an essay!

I cannot recommend this album highly enough. Jonathan Wilson is an exceptional talent (songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer) and this is perhaps one of the most beautifully sounding albums I've ever heard. Quite honestly, I can't say that I've heard anything better than this all year, so it is, without doubt, a very strong contender for my choice of album of the year and a firm addition to the (as yet unwritten) list of my very favourite albums of all time. Absolutely outstanding.
