BURRN!

Grazie.
Babymetal are a Japanese metal/J-pop group formed 4 years ago by the Japanese talent agency Amuse.
The group is a side-project of the Japanese idol group, Sakura Gakuin.
The members are Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal), Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal).
Su, aged 16 is the lead singer of the band. Yui and Moa, both aged 15 perform backing vocals and all 3 girls have choreography to perform during each song. Both in their music videos and in their live performances.
They are accompanied by the 'Kami Band', a set of very talented musicians who share the stage with the girls during their live shows.
They gained fame after their 'Gimme Choco!' music video on YouTube went viral. Currently it has amassed 16 and a half million views.
This year the group played their first ever European headline shows and even graced the stage at Sonisphere. They then went on to perform their first ever show in the States, followed by a 5-date run opening for Lady Gaga on her Art:Rave tour.
They then went on to perform at Heavy Montreal, before finishing their world tour back home in their native Japan.
The girls are currently set to return to the U.S. and England - New York and London on the 4th and 8th of November respectively as an extension of their massively successful world tour.
Now by my 5-star rating, you already know how highly I rate this album.
This is THE most important and most exciting metal album since System of a Down's 2001 release, 'Toxicity '.
The girls define their genre as "Kawaii Metal" (Cute Metal). The music is heavy, the voices are cute, even cherubic and the costumes are 'Lolita Goth' inspired.
It sounds so wrong if you're a traditional metal head. Trust me however, it is so good you'll wonder why nobody has combined these elements before.
The riffs are crushing, the solos are shredded with no regard to your sanity and the vocals are beautifully sung by Su-Metal whilst Yuimetal and Moametal contribute the backing vocals in perfect counterpoint.
This album is too immense to give you an overall summary that I'd be happy with, so I'm going to break it down for you song by song.
1 Babymetal Death
The opening track is probably the most traditional in terms of a standard heavy metal song. Starting with some very eerie vocals, the song then descends into a driving rhythm with guitars, bass and drums all playing an important part.
There is no singing on this track, instead it's used as an introduction to the band and it's members. The band name is spelled out and then the 3 girls introduce themselves in turn.
All the while, the music is pounding and aggressive and the solos are visceral. A fitting start to the album.
Used as the opening song during their live shows as well.
2 Megitsune
Definitely the most 'Japanese' sounding song on the album, Megitsune basically translates to female fox or maiden-like fox.
The song combines metal, dance and traditional Japanese music to mind-blowing effect.
Also one of Su-Metal's strongest vocal performances on the album.
After a few listens to this, you will be chanting "SORE" along with Yui and Moa.
Guaranteed.
3 Gimme Chocolate!!
Here it is, the song that started it all for the girls. The song that has had them breaking all sorts of tecords on worldwide music and metal charts.
It is practically impossible here to give you an adequate description of the song. It is just so unlike anything we've ever seen before.
Suffice it to say, if you like chocolate, metal, pop or anything cute, you will get a massive kick out of this song.
4 Iine
Literally translated - "It's good, isn't it?"
Definitely the most "electronica" based song on the album, the beginning reminded me of early Enter Shikari material.
The song then starts to sound like an Anime or computer game soundtrack leading up to the chorus.
Then suddenly rap is brought into the fray with all 3 girls getting their turn on the mic. Then with the pronouncement "Kitsune Da O!", the song breaks down into undoubtedly the heaviest moment on the whole album. The back into the poppy, anime music again to finish.
The most zany, unconventional and downright ludicrous song on the album.
Yet at the same time, utterly, mind-bogglingly brilliant.
5 Akatsuki
Meaning 'Dawn' or 'Daybreak', this song is the first of 2 on the album to feature Su-Metal as a soloist.
This song is the closest resemblance on the album to a traditional rock/metal
ballad.
Undeniably her most impressive vocal work on the album, the song is haunting yet beautiful and sentimental at the same time.
Dual-guitar solos feature and the song gradually crescendos to a climactic final vocal salvo from Su-Metal as the guitars fade.
The most spell-binding and enchanting song on the album. Majestic.
6 Doki Doki Morning
'Heartbeat Morning'. This song is like the ultimate prank or troll. It is the most "poppy" song on the album based on it's introduction but then you're blindsided by an absolutely crushing riff that comes out of nowhere.
You never really know where you are with this song, it constantly changes genres and refuses to be stereotyped or pigeonholed.
A happy, pop laden verse gives way to the aforementioned riff with Su-Metal asking "Ima Nanji?" (What time is it?)
Also the group's very first song from way back in 2011.
Love its unpredictability.
7 Onedari Daisakusen
Literally - "Beg Dad for it Operation"
This song is the first of 2 songs performed by Yuimetal and Moametal alone. As a pair, they're collectively known as 'Black Babymetal'.
The catchiest song on the album, it basically explains how flattery and looking cute and angelic will enable you to wrap your father around your little finger.
The girls very much state their intention with the English-sung lyrics, "One for the money, Two for the money, Three for the money, Money Money Money Money"
They even enlist the help of Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst with a sample of 'My Generation' taking you to the song's bridge.
On the strength of this song, Yui and Moa's fathers must be flat broke!
8 4 No Uta
"Song Four" This song like the previous one, is performed by 'Black Babymetal'.
In Japan the number '4' is considered unlucky, in a similar way as 13 is to us westerners.
However the girls expunge the theory in this song, pointing to all the positives of the number and it's meaning.
The song from the outset is very much rhythm based, led by the guitars and the drums. You soon get into the groove of the song and begin to relax and then from absolutely nowhere, Reggae raises it's dreadlocked head.
It is as baffling as the description sounds but unquestionably magnificent at the same time.
9 Uki Uki Midnight
"Hilarious Midnight"
The most "futuristic" song on the album, it fuses techno, electronica and metal into one glorious song.
Definitely the song most well-suited to a nightclub environment.
Featuring a great call and response section much loved by the fans during their live shows.
Additionally, you have to look at a translation video for this song.
I won't spoil it for you.
10 Catch Me if You Can
This English-titled song starts with an ominous sounding clang, followed by approaching footsteps.
Probably the closest thing to death metal on the album, the dark, menacing guitars and accompanying growls lend the song a particularly macabre tone.
However, the catchy, poppy chorus lightens the mood and contrasts the rest of the song perfectly.
A lot of input from Yui and Moa too during the verses.
11 Rondo of Nightmare
The second song featuring Su-Metal on her own is a dark, sinister piece with a constant driving accompaniment from the guitars and drums.
The song never really sets you at ease and feels taut as Su's amazing vocals convey a sense of dread.
No light-heartedness in this song, just Su-Metal's uncanny ability to hold an audience in her thrall.
12 Head Bangya!!
"Headbanger"
My favourite song on the entire album, it literally gives me goosebumps on every listen.
Starts with Su-Metal singing a jovial refrain before Yuimetal and Moametal start the "Hedoban" chant alongside the greatest riff on the whole album.
The song never lets up, it keeps driving you to new levels of emotion.
I feel I shouldn't say any more because this song needs to be heard with fresh ears and no concept of where it's taking you.
Gets the Kisune signs raised at their live shows, that's for sure!
13 Ijime Dame Zettai
"No More Bullying"
The album closer and their usual set-closer too during their live shows.
The song is somewhat of an opus, clocking in at over 6 minutes.
The song starts with a piano, shortly joined by Su's gentle melody. Then the song erupts into pure metal - galloping guitars, lightning drums and driving bass.
The girls deliver their message emphatically here and what a great message it is.
The live version of this song HAS to be seen for Yui and Moa's "fighting" scene alone. Such innovative choreography.
The song ends with a triumphant fanfare on the guitars, heralding not only the end of an epic song but also the end of one of the greatest metal albums since Metallica's 1991 'Black Album.'
This album is astonishing, breath-taking, inspirational, puzzling, emotional, beautiful, fun and just simply epic.
There has never been an album like this and probably never will be again.
Well, until the band release album number 2 of course.
Unsure whether or not to buy this album after everything I've said?
Just ask yourself one question.
ARE YOU READY TO MOSH'SH?
