She's about more than just movies...

The Essential series is responsible for some of the best compilations yet released. I own several of them. Everything from Dolly Parton & Alan Jackson to Michael Jackson and Carole King. They never disappoint me. No doubt about it whoever compiled the songs on other volumes of the essential series, knows what they are doing. All of the Cd's in these compilations are 2 disc and the compilers do a great job in choosing the photos and songs in this collection.
Doris Day --who just recently passed away-- is the subject of this essentials CD and once again the compilers have done a great job in choosing the tracks. They have cherry picked the best of her sides and some surprising selections that aren't as famous, but are still essential in some way. Doris Day started out in the 1940's as a big band/jazz singer. I'm most familiar with this aspect of her career. She has always been underrated and seems to be remembered today for her "good girl" image and her movies, Which include "Pillow Talk" and "Pajama Game". There's more to Doris than movies though....
Doris possessed a charming and at times considerably powerful vocal instrument. Listen to "Secret Love". Doris starts off the song softly crooning and then alternates this, with a pretty powerful belt at the songs mid section. Doris could be a powerful vocalist, but unlike today's singers, offered tasteful restraint. There's no question that Doris was a good belter, but she communicated a songs message tastefully. She could shade lines at will in almost indescribable ways. Doris had amazing tone, great punctuation and could really put a song over with relative ease. She's a joy to listen to.
I applaud the song choices here and mostly everything's here, but there are a few cuts from the "Columbia: Golden Girl" collection (1999) that would've fit well here. I think "That Jane From Maine" should've been included here as well as lesser known chestnuts such as her rendition of "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles". These are minor qualms though as the selection here is generally excellent. I love Doris voice and i'm enjoying this collection immensely. The liner notes are written by singer Nancy Sinatra and they are insightful and genuine. Doris music never got the attention it deserved in my book and that's a real shame. Because imo the music was better than the movies, but who can argue with success. Doris will forever be one of the best big band singers and hopefully, in the future she gets the accolades she so rightfully deserves.

I read all the reviews of this page, and it's difficult to say something new after that. Perhaps the introduction of Nancy Sinatra
resume all when she says than since she was a kid Doris Day was singing all the time. in her house, and we must remember that
"her" house was Frank Sinatra's house.....another legend. I think there's no other singer like her,her skill to make us BELIEVE
happiness when she is happy, and sadness when she is sad,you feel than she is "living" the song like no other singer can do.
Her marvellous voice is unique and her way to sing is timeless, she sounds great in the '40,'50,'60 ( for me and a lot of people
she was even better in the '60,just remember "Duet" with Andre Previn "Latin for lovers" "The love album.........) she sounds great
now and she will sound great in fifty years from now ! SHE IS THE BEST !!!

A superb collection of Doris' Columbia material

I own 11 Doris Day movies on DVD, and I always wondered why Sony Legacy did not add a Doris Day collection to their ESSENTIAL series (though a similar collection was released in Europe in 2006). I guess Legacy was waiting for Doris' 90th birthday, as the long overdue collection is finally here. The set ranges from 1945's "Sentimental Journey," Doris' first hit with Les Brown And His Orchestra (not yet "The Band Of Renown" that would go on and play with Bob Hope), to a 1965 recording of "Desafinado (Slighty Out of Tune)." Most of Doris' major hits are here, including her signature song, "Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)," "It's Magic," and "Secret Love"; film songs such as "Shakin' The Blues Away" (not as good as Annie Miller's original in
Easter Parade (Two-Disc Special Edition)
), "Move Over Darling," and "I've Got The Sun In the Morning"; novelties such as "Mister Tap Toe"; and many Great American Songbook classics. The CD labels are an interesting 1930s Columbia design, and the CD booklet features a lovely essay by Nancy Sinatra, whose dad's duet with Doris, "Let's Take An Old-Fashioned Walk," is also featured in the collection, along with duets by Frankie Laine, Buddy Clark, and John Raitt (Bonnie's dad).
If you are unfamiliar with Doris Day, this collection is an excellent start; if you're already a Day fan, you will enjoy this collection immensely. I hope that Legacy doesn't spoil it all by releasing an ESSENTIAL 3.0 version with a bonus disc.

This is an amazing album. Great tunes, great arrangements, great recording quality, and of course, great singer.
It is something of a period piece perhaps...But IMHO, it is timeless...
Of the 36 tunes in the two CDs, there were two tracks that I did not like ("Move Over Darling" and Desafinado"), and I think this was largely because they seemed to be out of place with the vibe of the rest of the tunes. But this is merely a quibble!
