I am really enjoying the Maisie Dobb's series. I think they are very well written and would give each four or five stars. What I like about this particular story Maisie is released from her normal format and her character is extended. I have read of some criticism that the author unnecessarily repeats Maisie's history, presumably for the sake of those who have not read previous books. I have some sympathy and think it would have been better covered in a prologue. But, still, I think this story deserves 5 stars.

In this novel, Maisie continues her journey through the world, trying to shake her deep sorrow and to rediscover her sense of self. When she disembarks from the ship taking her home to England, it is because she knows that she is not ready to return. Then, as she is walking through Gibraltar one evening, she comes across a dying man on her path, and she cannot shake the sense that she must understand why he was killed and who did it. As she persists in this quest, in the face of police reluctance to assist, an old face from England shows up, also pushing her to quit the investigation. But she continues to search for clues, to put together the strands of a broken weaving..
Set in the time of the civil war in Spain, there is lots of historical information. Friendless in the city, she must forge a new network, which of course includes many interesting secondary characters.
This is a fine book! Make sure you can get through the first 25 pages or so in one reading.
