Recorded in a barn-turned-studio in rural Ontario, the seven songs that make up Viet Cong were born largely on the road, when Flegel and bandmates Mike Wallace, Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen embarked on a 50-date tour that stretched virtually every limit imaginable. Close quarters hastened their exhaustion but also honed them as a group. You can designate records as seasonal, and you can feel Viet Cong's bleakness and declare it wintry. But the only way you get a frost is when there's something warmer to freeze up.

I heard viet congs (preoccupations these days) first release cassette in random tracks on youtube and couldn't wrap my head around the fact these guys weren't some brilliant overlooked gem from the 70's. These guys merge the best of underground music from the 70's and 80's. Now fast forward to their first official release and BAM! The lo-fi sound gives way to a fully realized post punk monolith. amazing guitar music, insanely precise and intricate drumming, thick chorus infused bass and deep sci fi influenced lyrics. I love the gated noise of pointless experience, the eno meets this heat intro of newspaper spoons. Continental shelf is a gorgeous television sequel riff meets synth psychedelia of the chorus. Perfect post punk blasts like bunker buster and silhouettes give way to the massive outro that is death. A huge jame based around one chord chiming away into infinity. And let's not forget their obvious nod to this heat with March of progress. If you love post punk and independent music go buy this album and support this amazing band.

Vous vous languissez d'attendre qu'Interpol sorte son nouvel "Antics" ? Que bien d'autres groupes retrouvent la magie de leurs débuts ? Voilà de quoi largement vous consoler. Comme Joy Division et Gang of Four, il n'y a pas que la provocation un peu inconséquente dans le choix du nom du groupe (qui lui a d'ailleurs valu plusieurs interdictions de représentation aux States), il y a aussi un fantastique contenu ! Prenez "Continental Shelf", emballez et c'est pesé. Seul défaut, le morceau est trop bref tellement il est beau et le nombre de titre est assez modeste. Mais c'est bien connu, qualité et quantité font rarement bon ménage. En un mot comme en cent : Foncez !
