本作はまず、全く違うノリのバンドの曲が彼のソロアルバムの中に混在していて、曲順で言うと2、4、8、15曲目は私的には不要だ。それを除いて、時の過ぎるのを嘆いた3曲目の歌詞、ハーブ･アルパートの曲みたいな5曲目のインストを挟んで、6,7曲目が挙げられる。10曲目は詩が良い、11曲目はブライアンらしい詩で、12曲目は「ペット･サウンズ」のインスト曲的なサウンドだ。「セイル･アウェイ」のメロディアスなベースは、ブライアンが自分で弾いているのではないか？次の「ワン･カインド･オブ･ラヴ」もまた「ペット･サウンズ」のようなホルン等の音がする。ここで言う“無条件の愛”というのは何も手を加えていない“無償の愛”というニュアンスに近いだろう。「ザ･ラスト･ソング」は補足すると、今は亡き弟の二人に両親、そして子どもたちの事のこと、家族の事を思ったと自伝にはある。「イン･ザ･バック･オブ･マイ･マインド」はとても情緒あふれる歌唱だ。彼という人は、特に心に不安を抱えている。そんな生き方に心から共感する。男が男に惚れるとはこのことだ。ありがとう、ブライアン･ウィルソン。そして、体には気をつけてください。最後の「ラヴ･アンド･マーシー」は先の17曲目と共に、彼がピアノを弾いていると思う。 アルバムのバックのフォトを見ても、優しそうで、いい人に見える。又、苦労も感じる。今の混迷した時代にあって、支えになる。なお、自伝映画の「ラヴ･アンド･マーシー」では、この同名曲と前述の「One Kind Of Love」がエンドロールに流れてくる。何かいまだに涙が出てしまう･･･ そんな関係性を持ったアルバムである。

ここ最近のブライアンの好調さの集大成とでも言えるアルバムです。
まさに質、量ともに、かつて最もその才能が充実していた時期にも勝るとも劣らないほどの作品を創り上げています。

何よりすごいのは、７０歳過ぎにして、全く老成した渋さに陥っていない点でしょう。
メロディもこれぞブライアンという極上のメロディを書いていますが、それに加えてどんな素晴らしいソングライターでも、
この歳に至って、ここまで若さというか挑戦的な作品を作ってくる人を私は他に知りません。
これはマラソンやボクシング選手に近い感覚で、生涯にどれだけ試合に出たかが結構関係しているのでしょうか。
長期リタイアのあったブライアンは、７０歳は過ぎていても、間３０年くらい飛んでタイムスリップして今がある感じがします。

今作の特徴は、ゲスト参加が多い事で、ブライアン・ウィルソン・プロジェクトのようなアルバムになっています。
とはいえ、ビッグネームをゲストが支えているという感覚ではなく、あくまでブライアンが理想のアルバムを作るために、
適材適所にゲストをチョイスし、編み上げた作品という趣向で、かつての「ペットサウンズ」や「スマイル」に近い
コンセプチャルな作品と言えるでしょう。
確かにブライアン復活の初期にはワンダーミンツのメンバーが、まだ病み上がりのブライアンを支えていたという面は
あると思いますが、ここ最近のブライアンの作品から感じるのは、サポートを自在に使う術を完全に掌握してきたなという事です。

メインボーカルを取っていない曲でも、打ち込みで作られた曲でも、全てアルバムの雰囲気作りのために自らやっていることで、
とにかく、僕はあらゆるプレッシャーから解放されてやりたいことをやっていくよという強い姿勢を感じ取れるのです。
「That's Why God Made the Radio」で復活したビーチボーイズも、またごたごたで空中分解してしまい、以前のブライアンを思うと、
そのことで精神状態が悪くなってしまう気がしますが、今のブライアンは頭をサッと切り替え、この作品を創り上げました。
一時は廃人になった天才でしたが、逆に今やそのことは彼があらゆる束縛から自由になるための必然だったという気がします。

『No Pier Pressure』は、2015年に発表されたブライアン・ウィルソンのスタジオアルバムだ。

オリジナル曲を中心としたソロアルバムとしては2008年の『That Lucky Old Sun』以来7年ぶりとなる（間にジョージ・ガーシュウィンのカバー集『Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin』（2010年）、ディズニーソングのカバー集『In The Key Of Disney』（2011年）、ビーチボーイズとしてのスタジオアルバム『That's Why God Made The Radio』（2012年）を挟む）。

一聴して驚いたのが、70歳過ぎとは思えないみずみずしいサウンドだ。本作ではアル・ジャーディン、デヴィッド・マークス、ブロンディ・チャプリンといったビーチボーイズのメンバーだけでなく、20代～30代という孫世代のミュージションとコラボレーションしている。そのことがいい方向に働いたのだろう。全曲自分がリードヴォーカルをとるという縛りから開放されたのも大きい。

ポール・マッカートニー『New』を聴いたときも思ったのだが、「ポップスの神様」は才能が枯れるということを知らない。年齢相応の枯れた表現をするという道もあっただろうし、それも決して悪くないのだが、そうならないのはポップスがもともとティーンエイジャーのための音楽だったからだろう。

昔からのビーチボーイズファンにはうれしい贈り物もある。「Somewhere Quiet」は『Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)』（1965年）に収録されていたインストゥルメンタルの名曲「Summer Means New Love」に新しい歌詞をつけたものだ。どんな曲に生まれ変わったかぜひ聴いて確かめてもらいたい。

日本盤には2曲のボーナストラックが付けられている。アルバムの流れという意味では「The Last Song」で終わったほうがいいのは間違いないが、このボーナストラックも見逃せない。

「In The Back Of My Mind」は『Today!』（1965年）に収録されていた曲で、オリジナルはデニス・ウィルソンが歌っていた。今回収録されているのは1975年のデモ音源でブライアンのヴォーカルとピアノだけだが、あの頃のブライアンの歌声が胸を打つ。ブライアンのファンであればこの一曲のためだけに買っても後悔しない名演だ。

様々な、主に若手のミュージシャンをフィーチャーし、同時代的なサウンドで新境地を切り拓きつつ、自らのキャリアを集大成する（過去の自らの作品や、他のミュージシャンの作品へのオマージュが全編にちりばめられています）、または‘80年代以降の、自らが十分に機能出来なかった時期の埋め合わせをしようとしているかのような、非常に高度で内容量の多いアルバムである様に思いました。

一曲に込められた内容が非常に多い（しかしシンプルに聴こえる様に仕上げる）のはいつも通りというか、それ以上な位なのですが、それに加え音楽的な方向性が非常にバラエティに富み、そして曲数も非常に多く、70歳を過ぎた人間の作品とは思えない驚異的な創造力を感じます。

まず1．This Beautiful Day は前作の最終曲Summer's Gone のまさに続きという感じで始まり、全曲素晴らしいのですが、ブライアンらしいメロウで美しいメロディの3.Whatever Happened、アンニュイな女性ヴォーカルが「イパネマの娘」を思わせるボサノヴァ曲4.On The Island、晩年のマイルス・デイヴィスを彷彿とさせるトランペットをフィーチャーしたインスト5.Half Moon Bay、讃美歌のような6.Our Special Love、映画のエンディング・テーマ的な壮大さの14.One Kind Of Loveが個人的には特に気に入りました。

前作「ザッツ・ホワイ・ゴッド〜」で‘60年代後半からほとんど重荷でしかなかった（そしておそらくは、ずっと前に終わらせるべきだった）ビーチ・ボーイズにけりをつけ、このアルバムでは13.Sail Awayと来て、16.The Last Songで終わり、ブライアンの音楽キャリアがこれで本当に最後になるということなのかなとも思いました（未発表・未完成音源はまだ沢山あるようですが）。

ボーナス・トラックの2曲はいずれもピアノの弾き語りによる再録で、17.In The Back Of My Mindは’75年のデモ（ジョン・レノンの晩年のデモ曲に雰囲気が似ています）、18.Love And Mercyは’05年のチャリティー・シングルのカップリング曲として収録されていたものだと思います。17.は急激に声質が変わる過渡期のブライアンの、非常にエモーショナルというか悲痛な歌声によるものなのですが、オリジナルとはヴォーカルが違うだけでなく（オリジナルはデニス）、歌詞もメロディも大きく異なり、ほとんど別物です。特に”In the FRONT of my mind〜”と始まるサビの部分は全く違い、非常に興味深いです。

文章が長くなり過ぎてしまいましたが、それだけの内容のあるアルバムです。

Excelente disco doble, de buen gramaje , buena presentación del folder y lo conseguí a buen precio. Canciones muy Frescas, al estilo The Beach Boys. Aunque lo triste es que el código de la descarga digital ya expiro, deberían de dar mas tiempo o incluir un cd.

This album is spectacular, I originally watched a television special celebrating the music on this album. The music heard on the show made me curious enough to buy the album. I was not disappointed, the known sound that Brian Wilson is known for is heard throughout. I have always wondered why a musical group that has been around for many years that once could write hit after hit is unable to write a decent song. This album is not like this at all, if you are a Beach Boy fan this album will not disappoint. Maybe it is all the guest singers that aided with this album and its songs or maybe it is just that Wilson is still able to tap into his creativity and is still able to write music that people want to hear and can sing along with.
This album will not disappoint!

Something unusual happened in the past two days. I have listened to the same album over & over. I just don't do this, even with albums I really like. The album I've been listening to is No Pier Pressure. And I didn't have to TRY to keep listening to it, ...it just keeps pulling me back.

First, I am interested in everything Brian does ... good or bad. To me he is the single preeminent composer and arranger alive, and I always want to hear what he's working on. Since I first heard Surfin' USA on the radio as a boy, Brian's music has taken me to a place of freedom, awe and wonder. Just to give an idea of where I'm coming from, my favorite Beach Boy's albums are: Friends, SmiLe, Sunflower, Summer Days & Summer Nights, Today. Oh yeah, Pet Sounds too! I thought the last Beach Boy's album, That's Why God Made The Radio was very strong with a couple of clunkers.

With the exception of Brian's version of SmiLe, (which is a special circumstance, a modern reconstruction of a timeless, lost treasure), I find Brian's solo albums to be spotty. They are mostly excellent, but with pieces that sometimes don't quite fit: a bridge that doesn't work well here, a clunky verse there, a lead vocal that is overprocessed or off in some way. But I still think Brian's solo albums are quite strong and all include some incredible work.

I came to No Pier Pressure a skeptic. Some months ago when I heard clips of the album I wondered if the songs would stand up, or were the layers of vocal harmonies a beautiful way to make so-so songs sound better than they are? I have listened and listened to No Pier Pressure and my skepticism has left. For me, No Pier Pressure is Brian's best solo album of new material. The songs are all in the excellent to very good quality range. It is fantastic to have Beach Boys Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin, and David Marks join in. The other guest artists work well too. I love Blondie singing Sail Away, and She & Him on On The Island, ...and Al, all over the place. They all do what I have thought Brian needed for years -- take the lead vocal pressure off him by having others help out more (as was done in the Beach Boys). When I saw Brian on his tour with Jeff Beck, I wondered why he didn't have Al Jardine handling more of the lead vocals (Al's voice is in much better shape than Brian's these days).

The one flaw I found with No Pier Pressure immediately, was that the placement of Runaway Dancer as the second track ruined the flow of the album. (I think that's true even if you like the song, which I didn't at first. I find myself liking Runaway Dancer better after seeing the live version that Brian did on the Conan O'Brien show).

Luckily in this day of playlists I can create my own track listing, which I offer below. I have programmed it like two sides of a record. It reflects the flow of songs that work together as suites, as well as which songs I like the best, and which fit well soundwise and thematically. Since Runaway Dancer is a song Brian seems to be featuring, I moved it to the leadoff spot on Side Two. Anyway, if you're interested, see what you think.

P.S. I love the bonus tracks on the Target version: Love & Mercy, and In The Back Of My Mind (Brian's 1975 demoish version of a song Dennis sang on the Beach Boys Today album. (Which is an interesting inclusion, since to my ears some of the songs on No Pier Pressure have a Beach Boys Today vibe).

P.S.S. Props to Brian's GREAT band, including Scott Bennett, Probyn Gregory, Nick Walusko, Nelson Bragg, Paul von Mertens, etc.!!! I'm really glad to hear Matt Jardine (Al's son) is back in the band as well!

I judge how well I like an album by the number of needle skippers on it and there's maybe only one on here, but even that's not on every listen. I've seen some reviewers say they don't like the over-production and want to hear Brian's voice warts and all without auto-tune. I don't subscribe to that, as I prefer to hear the songs in as good a condition as possible. Some on here forget Brian made his name as much for his revolutionary production techniques, as the gorgeous songs and voices. No one complains for instance about the double tracking of what were very young men's vocals on virtually all his seminal work to make them sound better. Yet now, when his voice as a soon to be 73 year old man needs a bit of assistance, some are up in arms! Back in the day it took dozens of takes to get the vocals right. Brian would hear someone just slightly out of tune and make them do it again. I don't think either he or Al would physically up to that now, yet some folk are reacting like he's the only artist who uses auto-tune! Plus, like it's not fair to expect Bowie to produce another Alladin Sane, it's not right to expect another Pet Sounds or Smile. Get real and relax and listen to what is a really lovely, mellow album full of Brian's trademark ooohs and aaahs.
