4枚組の普通のCDのボックスだと思っていたら、なんとLP盤のジャケットの大きさのケースに、4枚のCDが並んで収まってました。届いたときに、ありゃ、ビニル盤買っちゃったのか、と思った。ベスト盤らしく、オリジナルのジャケット写真がきれいに並んでいて懐かしい雰囲気です。

ウエス・モンゴメリーやスタン・ゲッツのヒット作で脚光を浴びた名プロデューサー、クリード・テイラーが設立したCTIレーベル。斬新な編曲、豪華なジャズ・アーティストそしてオシャレなジャケットで「フュージョン・ブーム」（当時はクロスオーバーと呼ばれた）の牽引力になった70-75年の最盛期のアルバムから39曲をチョイスしたCD４枚組。
LPサイズのジャケットには、名作たちが散りばめられ、18pの解説付き。値段も手頃。
これまでCTIのベスト盤はいろいろと発売されてきたが、アーティスト別だったり１枚組だったり、満足な企画はなかった。[Straight Up][Deep Grooves/Big Hits][The Brazilian Connection][Cool and Classic]の４テーマで構成。ミルト・ジャクソン、ジェリー・ミリガン、チェット・ベイカー、ジム・ホール、ケニー・バレルなどの大物や、若き日のジョージ・ベンソン、グローバー・ワシントンJrの作品も。もちろんボブ・ジェームスやデオダート、ロン・カーター、ヒューバート・ローズたちも元気。実に幅広い音楽ジャンルをカバーしたこのレーベルならではの企画。

確か1972年頃だったと思います。いつも行ってるレコード店の方からいつもクラシックばかり
聞いてるから、たまにはこんなアルバムも聞いてみたらと試聴したのがデオダートのﾂｧﾗﾄｩｽﾄﾗはかく語りき
でした。それ以来約40年CTIの大ファンです ジャケットも素晴らしいですね。
当時買ったレコードも今でも大切にしています (ジャケット見ながら当時の若かった頃を思い出します)

5 étoiles sans aucun doute!

4 cd classés en 4 thèmes:
Le premier regroupe des incontournables du jazz: So What, Moment's Notice et Autumn Leaves pour ne citer qu'eux.... Donc c'est du classique interprété de façon magistrale...
Le deuxième cd s'intitule deep grooves/ big hits et du coup porte très bien son nom! Red Clay donne tout de suite le ton! 2 morceaux d'Ester Philipps sont également très agréables... Le grand hit de Deodato et le merveilleux titre Mister Magic!!! Vraiment que des hits!!
Le 3eme cd avec des influences brésiliennes se différencie vraiment du reste de la compil avec des perles comme First Light,Salt Song et d'autres morceaux avec un coté jazz samba très plaisant.
Le 4eme cd est une merveille!!cool and classic.... Tous les morceaux sont bons et le dernier Concierto de Aranjuez interprété par Jim Hall est vraiment mythique!!!!!
J'ai beaucoup de cd de CTI et cette compil retranscris très bien l'esprit de ce label incroyable!!!!

If you like CTI jazz this is an excellent package.
Most of the cuts are strong with the exception of "White Rabbit" from George Benson.
Benson recorded many stronger cuts that have aged better than this cover of a rock tune.

It is a great accomplishment when a colection is "pulled" together, as successfully as this was, from an enormous pool of talent and ground breaking music as far back as 40 years ago and still sound contemporary and innovative. I applaud all those involved.
Creed Taylor had a vision realized. All the artists contributed to every album recorded, many sitting in on sessions just for the experience, all knowing that something unique was being created. As Bob James says, he spent at least "5 days a week at Rudy's (Van Gelder) studio sessions" and he loved all the talented musicians.
The collection is broken down to 4 discs, with titles like "Straight Up" for disc one and "Cool and Classic" for disc 4, and, with very few exceptions, every cut fits.
The Bossa Nova influence is not overlooked either. That is Disc 2 with an alternate take of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Brazil" which is nice, but, curious, at the very least, to be included where I would have used the original version.
The "Hits' disc is exceptional, but, again, I would have not included the Esther Philips disco cut. It does not fit. She had so many other wonderful tunes that may not have been "hits" but were known and would have enhanced this disc. Otherwise, Deodato's "Also Sprach....(2001 theme)" Bob James "Westchester Lady" Grover's "Mister Magic" are a comfort reminder that even in the forgotton jazz world there was crossover music that appealed to everyone. This was Creed Taylor's mission. To make this type of music accessible to all without imposing the preconceived notion that jazz is strictly for purists.
I also have to mention the album art which was as slick and contemporary as any in any other genre.
When the salesman from CTI came into my music department in 1972, where I worked for the Alexander's retail chain, and, introduced me to the various artists, I was hooked. The look, the sound, the presentation was nothing I had experienced prior.
I hope you will be "hooked" when you purchase this collection.
I cannot wait for the next set. Soon I hope!
PS-I still have many of the original vinyl albums and they still sound great on my 1966 Lafayette amp.

CTI-Records wurde von dem renommierten Produzenten Creed Taylor gegründet. Das war 1968 und schon zehn Jahre später war wieder Schluss. Was aber dieses Label in diesen 10 Jahren geschaffen hat, war nicht weniger als "the cool revolution", eine ziemlich unbescheidene, aber zutreffende Selbstbeschreibung. Die Programmatik war nämlich, ganz gezielt die breite Masse für Jazz zu begeistern. Erstklassige Arrangements, zwischendurch tanzbare Latinrhythmen, perlende Pianoklänge auf dem Fender-Rhodes, hin und wieder der behutsame Einsatz des E-Basses anstelle des Kontrabasses, hier und da das Wah-Wah-Pedal als Klangerzeuger für die Gitarristen, und der federnde Beat der Schlagzeuger waren die Zutaten, den Jazz hoffähig zu machen und neue Hörerschichten für dieses Genre zu erobern. Alles eine Zumutung für Jazzpuristen, natürlich, aber die Stars des Labels wie Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, George Benson, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Stanley Turrentine, Grover Washington, Chet Baker, Hubert Laws und viele andere praktizierten keinesfalls beliebige Loungemusik. Im Gegenteil: die Ästhetik des Jazz blieb trotz mancher Streicherzutaten immer erhalten, und die Musiker machten verdientermaßen auch ein wenig Geld. Die 4-CD-Box zum vierzigsten Geburtstag von CTI, deren Verpackung einer LP nachempfunden ist, gibt einen wunderbaren Überblick über das Schaffen dieses wichtigen Labels. Die sorgfältig zusammengestellte Musikauswahl und ein informatives, großformatiges und liebevoll gestaltetes Booklet machen diese Veröffentlichung aus dem Jahre 2010 zu einer echten Kostbarkeit.
