Carlos Chávez and His World (The Bard Music Festival Book 38) (English Edition) Kindle版
Carlos Chávez (1899–1978) is the central figure in Mexican music of the twentieth century and among the most eminent of all Latin American modernist composers. An enfant terrible in his own country, Chávez was an integral part of the emerging music scene in the United States in the 1920s. His highly individual style—diatonic, dissonant, contrapuntal—addressed both modernity and Mexico's indigenous past. Chávez was also a governmental arts administrator, founder of major Mexican cultural institutions, and conductor and founder of the Orquesta Sinfónica de México. Carlos Chávez and His World brings together an international roster of leading scholars to delve into not only Chávez’s music but also the history, art, and politics surrounding his life and work.
Contributors explore Chávez’s vast body of compositions, including his piano music, symphonies, violin concerto, late compositions, and Indianist music. They look at his connections with such artistic greats as Aaron Copland, Miguel Covarrubias, Henry Cowell, Silvestre Revueltas, and Paul Strand. The essays examine New York’s modernist scene, Mexican symphonic music, portraits of Chávez by major Mexican artists of the period, including Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo, and Chávez’s impact on El Colegio Nacional. A quantum leap in understanding Carlos Chávez and his milieu, this collection will stimulate further work in Latin American music and culture.
The contributors are Ana R. Alonso-Minutti, Amy Bauer, Leon Botstein, David Brodbeck, Helen Delpar, Christina Taylor Gibson, Susana González Aktories, Anna Indych-López, Roberto Kolb-Neuhaus, James Krippner, Rebecca Levi, Ricardo Miranda, Julián Orbón, Howard Pollack, Leonora Saavedra, Antonio Saborit, Stephanie Stallings, and Luisa Vilar Payá.

Another imbalance is redressed in an important essay by Roberto Kolb Neuhaus, the leading authority on Silvestre Revueltas, Chávez's one-time friend and colleague who became (at least in the retrospective view of musicology since his untimely death in 1940) his chief rival for dominance of Mexican composition in the 20th century. Kolb Neuhaus clarifies both the sharp musical and political differences and the shared goals of these two musicians, in the process restoring some balance to a viewpoint that has been dominated up to now by the defenders of Revueltas against the (rightly or wrongly) perceived political power of Chávez.
One major disappointment is the absence of any real discussion of the stage music (ballets and opera), as well as Chávez's less important but nevertheless intriguing involvement with electronic music. His relatively popular Piano Concerto is also given short shrift, and the translation of Julián Orbon's record-liner notes for the six symphonies is a bit of a let-down, since this is already available in English (if that translation is inadequate, Saavedra, as the editor/translator, does not say so, and implies that their publication as record-liner notes was only in Spanish), and is very general in nature. Much more valuable would have been a translation of Orbón's elaborated, far more detailed analyses of these central works in the composer's output, never available in English, although they are about three times the length of the included essay, and so perhaps too long to justify inclusion in an anthology of this nature.
On the whole, this is a most welcome addition to the literature on this today-underrated composer, providing a strong foundation for further investigation of the subject and (dare one hope) some stimulation for revival of interest on the part of performers in some music once regarded as being in the forefront of musical life in both of the Americas, but now fallen into neglect due in part to its uncompromising integrity in the face of competition from arguably less-well-composed music by Chávez himself as well as his contemporaries, which happens to appeal more immediately to popular taste.
