沢山のモチーフが掲載されていて、取りあえず楽しいのですが。
やはり、モチーフのデザインに古さを感じます。
今は、立体的なデザインが素敵に見えてしまうのは、私だけではないと思います。
参考にして、何か編みたいと思ったのですが、眺めただけで終わってしまいそうです。

This book is wonderful, not only does it have motif's, but also how to join each one specifically. In addition to a bunch of borders there are point lessons at the end to show you where to attach stitches. The book is charts, but very clear. If you practice one or two projects prior to trying the ones in the book (simple granny square, etc) by reading a chart, you'll be able to jump in.

300 Refreshing New Motifs from Japan

This is an extensive collection of 300 designs that includes 70 designs for trim and borders. Many of the border designs also include the appropriate matching corner motif which is a welcome feature.

The photos are clear and well done. Each motif is worked in cotton or a tight ply thread that displays well. It is photographed and charted; meaning you must count stitches on a chart. The charts generally are 2 ½" to 3" across and a manageable viewing size. There is no English text. That is good and bad. The good is that since this is in a foreign language, there is no confusing text to interfere with the designs. The down side is there are no instructions beyond charts. This is a format for experienced crocheters. I recommend that those using the book might like to have a Harmony Guide on crochet handy for reference.

The motifs feature stitches from lacy work with picots and shells, there are various two and three dimensional flower designs, to medium and heavier stitches such as puff stitch, loose puff stitch, bobbles, bullion, and popcorn stitches.

The motif designs themselves, which include various shapes such as; circles, triangles, squares, stars, and hexagons, often have additional schematics giving directions on attaching them, as well as their appearance when attached.

My grandmother owned a yarn shop and I have cultivated her habit of snatching up every design photo and design book that strikes my fancy throughout the past decades. At some point even the vastest reference library becomes routine and stilted. I tired of Leisured Arts years ago and am hungry for high quality design. These Japanese motifs suit my need. They are fresh and lovely, and unique. The thread colors are tasteful, pleasing, and not garish. They can be applied to many projects, and freestyle crocheters will find their creative juices flowing with new ideas.

There are a wealth of motifs suitable for afghans, and many for shawls, scarves, to tablecloths, and clothes. Most of all they are not a bunch of recycled American motifs that we have grown tired of doing. Instruction in English would be most beneficial, and there will be a few snags along the way, but they are surmountable for chart readers.

Lastly: The seller, Colors of Japan, lived up to their excellent reputation.

1. The seller contacted me after my order was placed to make sure that I understood this book is written in Chinese. I assured her that I was aware.
2. The book preview showed that as with most current crochet books, there are both finished pictures and stitch diagrams. Upon opening this book I found that to be exactly true.
3. Even if you are a novice to crochet, if you learn how to read a stitch diagram, this book is easy to follow.
4. I own many craft "stitch manuals", but this caught my eye as I was looking for trims-edgings, as well as new blocks. I was pleased to discover that only a handful of patterns are duplicates to ones already in my library. Additionally, where the motifs are a square/hex/or triangle, there is also an additional diagram for ways to attach them to create a larger piece. This allows for a join as you go method to be used, which surely is more efficient than weaving in all the ends.

I am so very pleased that I purchased this book.

I thought I was purchasing the Japanese edition of this book. Although I’ve since learned that the Japanese edition was discontinued in 2008, the Japanese edition photo was used along with “Japanese edition” in the bold print at the top of the advertised description. However, under the read more tab in smaller print it states it’s in Chinese. Also, in the product description box, it states the language is Japanese. I missed the note regarding Chinese and purchased it. I was considering returning it, but the return amount with the shipping and return fees will be $14.50 which is less than half the original purchase price not including tax and shipping. I was frustrated and disappointed at first and felt misled, but I am glad I kept it. Not what I expected, but it’s still good

This book is just beautiful--I want to start at page 1 and make every single motif into something special. Each one is prettier than the one before it. I need more hands!

The charts are easy to follow so there is no need to be able to read the text. I've always shyed away from books in Chinese, Japanese or Spanish because I couldn't read them. This book just opened up a whole new world of crochet for me.

I've been crocheting for 45 years so I do a lot of free-form crochet. This book makes you think of new ways to make things. I just love it and highly recommend it to anyone who loves this art form.
