Neon Indian (aka Alan Palomo) debuts VEGA INTL. Night School, the long awaited follow up to 2011's Era Extrana and the standalone 2015 single "Annie." The record was conceived during a period of aesthetic reinvention for Palomo, as he retooled the lo-fi and spontaneous writing style he'd developed as Neon Indian by incorporating elements of the cleaner production values and dance oriented approach of his previous recording moniker VEGA, ultimately merging the two into one fast lane. Developed over a four year period, the album brims with funk-centric guitar lines, pronounced Balearic rhythms, and the most elaborate songwriting of his career. Composed and recorded in a variety of locations including, but not limited to, the cabin aboard a cruise ship, DFA's Plantain Studios in New York, Pure X's practice space in Austin, Ben Allen's studio in Atlanta, and mixed in Brooklyn with Alex Epton (XXXchange).

全世界で5400万本超を売り上げたゲーム、「GRAND THEFT AUTO V」に収録された名曲"Polish Girl"がヒットを記録してからはや2年。
もはや「チルウェーヴ」は完全に死語になりつつありますが、多くの先人が証明してきたように、真のミュージシャンはジャンルの盛衰などには左右されないものです。
Neon Indianのサード・アルバム"Vega INTL. Night School"は、やはりファースト、セカンドに劣らぬ傑作でした。

16ビットのレトロなチップチューン・シンセ、ピッチシフトされたボーカルという、Neon Indianの基本的なスタイルはかつてのままです。
ただ唯一にして最大の違いは、ビートがアップ・テンポに一新されていること。
なんでもクルーズ船の上でレコーディングされたそうで、端的に言ってしまえば「南国風」。イビザやレゲエとまではいかないにせよ、非常にバレアリックです。
内省的な薄暗さが漂っていた前作"Era Extrana"よりも、デビュー作"Psychic Chasms"の系統をさらに発展させたように聞こえます。

特に#8"Slumlord"、#9"Slumlord's Re-lease"、#10"Techno Clique"の流れが絶品。
歪んだチップチューンとPalomoのすかしたボーカルが、南国風のビートの上でぐちゃぐちゃに交じり合いながら跳ね回っていく様子をぼけーっと聞いていると、Todd Terjeの"It's Album Time"よりさらに倒錯した高揚感・酩酊感を味わえます。（できればクルーズ船の上で夕日を眺めながらコロナやら青島やらをラッパ飲みしつつ聞きたいですね。周りからはドン引きされそうですけど。）
胡散臭いジャケットはなんとなくツイン・ピークスを連想させますが、たしかにこの熱病に浮かされたような異様なハイ・テンションはリンチの系譜と言えなくも無いのかもしれません。

今までで最大級の期待がかかった新作だったと思いますが、そんな気負いを全く感じさせない素晴らしい一枚となりました。
このままこのスタイルを貫き続けて欲しいですね。

Llegó más rápido de lo que prometían. No lo he abierto todavía porque es para un regalo pero escuché que la calidad del sonido era buena, venía bien empaquetado, no tenía ningún rasguño.

I discovered this artist on a suggested playlist on Spotify in the track Slumlord. It weaves a dance track with Latin rhythms which became so addictive that I needed the CD. The album is packed with a diverse array of tracks covering ballads, reggae and disco. My particular favourites are Baby's eyes and Dear Skorpio Magazine.

You can hear the influences of Prince, Hall & Oats and Todd Rungren. However there is no straight imitation but generous compliments with a modern twist.

In an age of dull, repetitive beats and idol status for many untalented artists, it is marvellous to have an album of lush musical textures which is a joy to listen to.
