Famine, Affluence, and Morality (English Edition) 1st 版, Kindle版
In 1972, the young philosopher Peter Singer published "Famine, Affluence and Morality," which rapidly became one of the most widely discussed essays in applied ethics. Through this article, Singer presents his view that we have the same moral obligations to those far away as we do to those close to us. He argued that choosing not to send life-saving money to starving people on the other side of the earth is the moral equivalent of neglecting to save drowning children because we prefer not to muddy our shoes. If we can help, we must--and any excuse is hypocrisy. Singer's extreme stand on our moral obligations to others became a powerful call to arms and continues to challenge people's attitudes towards extreme poverty. Today, it remains a central touchstone for those who argue we should all help others more than we do.
As Bill and Melinda Gates observe in their foreword, in the age of today's global philanthropy, Singer's essay is as relevant now as it ever was. This attractively packaged, concise edition collects the original article, two of Singer's more recent popular writings on our obligations to others around the world, and a new introduction by Singer that discusses his current thinking.

A great book.. was recommended to me by a person at a liquor store. I used to work at a liquor 10 years ago and Strang people come into your life. A man told me about this book and told me to prove his personal point...which was ..."ORDINARY PEOPLE ARE EVIL" ...some know it some don't...and some don't care...this little book talks about your responsibility to your self to prevent your self from turning evil.

Impeccable Logic, if you don't want to think too much about it

I despise inequality and the tragedies it creates but.. the logic process behind this book is extremely close minded and closed to any kind of doubt or debate. This is not how a thinker develops his arguments

Relevance today
2023年7月2日に英国でレビュー済みAmazonで購入
Whilst written in 1971 at the time of famine and civil war in East Pakistan ( now Bangladesh ) this seminal book is perhaps even more relevant today, in terms of its message regarding the moral obligation of the rich to the poor. This is particularly the case when the current climate crisis is factored in, with the carbon footprint of the affluent west, and its implications for those in the global south.

A good read with solid arguments and revealing numbers.

What I got after reading this book:
1) Reasoning behind how people act when it comes to helping others.
2) Arguments on how we must critically think beyond our natural response when evaluating between duty and charity.
3) Numerical data on how much is the potential of individual donations.
