アナログ盤にキズをつけてしまい、ケイト・ブッシュとのデュエットのところでバチバチ音飛びするので聴くのをやめて２０年。
CD化は嬉しいのですが、残念ながらまたアナログ盤起こしですね。マスターテープはもう無いのですかね？
ヘッドフォンで聴くとざわざわノイズが気になりますが、普通にスピーカーで聴く分にはさほど気にならないと思います。
とにかく手軽に聴けるだけで個人的には十分です。
レアトラックも満載ですし、若き日のハンス・ジマーも良い仕事しています。
ただ、どこにも高橋幸宏氏のクレジットが無いですね。意図的なものか、忘れただけなのか？

Take a David Bowie look alike/soundalike, add some Gary Numan and throw in a bit of Ultravox for good measure and a lot of cheesy 70's glam rock nostalgia and you get the extraordinary Zaine Griff. This very enigmatic fellow from New Zealand put out these two albums in the 80's, and you can now listen to them back to back on this remastered CD . The first album "Ashes and Diamonds" is hopelessly romantic on the whole but at times it is a bit sleazy, with lyrics that might make some folks blush as it does have some very raunchy and thinly veiled sexual references therein. Listen to "Secret Pleasures" and "Ta Cigarette Apres L'amour, and it's pretty clear what it's all about. It's sexy as Hell. It is however an excellent album and is something I have been searching for on CD for a very long time. I could talk about each track, but you need to give it a listen and make up your own mind about it. The second album "Figures" goes the full New Romantic hog and sounds a bit like Visage in places with synths a plenty and some grandiose songs that really nail the 80's electronica vibe to the max. Overall the two albums are strangely unique and have a timeless place all of their own and are a must listen for fans of the quintessential 80's New Romantic sound. There are bonus tracks and out takes aplenty on this extensive compilation and a nice booklet as well, so you can read about Zaine and all his adventures in the music industry. Interestingly enough, both Hans Zimmer and Warren Cann of Ultravox played on Zaine's albums and the results deserve far more recognition than they have received thus far. Of course, the stand out tracks on this compilation are the beautiful "Flowers" with the absolutely gorgeous Kate Bush, "The Vanishing Men" which reminds me of John Foxx and "Passionate Reply", an Ultravox song that makes you wonder if Zaine Griff should have been the lead singer of the reformed Ultravox, as he was far more charismatic and flamboyant than the rather boring and diminutive Midge Ure. Shell out your pennies and get this excellent CD compilation before it's deleted for a rare 80's obscure delight. Brilliant stuff!

A brilliant release... for once the claim of 'Remastered' is valid as the audio quality of this release is truly excellent [congrats to the engineer who processed the two track master tape]. 'Ashes and Diamonds' really shines - a great Tony Visconti production job that this release compliments immensely. 'Figures' is sonically different from 'A&D' with a more 'electro' orientation but is still punchy and clear as a bell. The bonus tracks are a fascinating insight into the musical chronology of Zaine Griff and looking at the dates of these recording there are some surprises [e.g 83rd & 4th was initially recorded in 1978 but didn't appear on album until Figures in 1982... and it is an equally excellent version to the official recording]. Some of these tracks really deserved to be made into master recordings as there are some real gems in the 16 demos and 5 single / B-Sides here [the B sides are all great additions and nicely done as well... although strangely the B side of 'Flowers', 'Turn Out The Lights', isn't included]... the 'Flowers' demo is possibly a better version that the single / album track.
The liner notes are also fascinating as Zaine Griff provides a load of brilliant information about his career during this period in a chronological manner that is the most informative mini-autobiography I have seen on this artist... and there are some great photos included.
Sadly Zaine Griff never managed to hit the mainstream consciousness, but then perhaps he was just a little too clever and stylish for his own good as far as mass appeal goes - none the less for a lot of us who were tuned into what he was doing, the man created some great work that has stood the test of time despite being very 80s orientated. I would wholeheartedly recommend this release to fans and anyone who has never heard of Zaine Griff alike - it's a much more satisfying and stylish musical release than many of his contemporaries produced and had success with. If you remember Zaine, then you need to buy this release [and not the inferior Japanese single album versions], if you've never heard of him... then give this a listen as you're unlikely to be disappointed [that is unless you really feel that guys like Ed Sheeran and other TV show manufactured artists are stimulating and inspirational]. Ashes & Diamonds / Figures is a great release by a great artist of the time - highly recommended!

Wie geht man mit Musik um die entstanden ist, als es nur Schallplatten und Cassetten gab, als das Erscheinen eines Albums ein Ereignis war, keine beliebige Einspeisung in einen übervollen MP3-Gulag. Wie erklärt man einer, jeder qualitativen Unterscheidung entwöhnten Hörer-Nachkommenschaft, daß man sich mit einem Album anfreunden mußte, sein Cover und die Texte, auch die Credits studierte. Man entdeckte Namen, die einem später wiederbegegnen sollten. Hans Zimmer etwa, oder zu jener Zeit bekannte Größen wie Kate Bush, Yukihiro Takahashi oder Warren Cann.

Und heute? MP3 Files, ein körperloses virtuelles Bit-Gespinst, ohne Tags, ohne konzeptionellen Zusammenhang, ohne...

Und wer war Zaine Griff? Lebt der noch? Wer will das wissen? Nun dieser Mr. Griff war ein Schöngeist der späten 70er und frühen 80er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts, Neuseeländer und überzeugt auf vielen Gebieten ein Künstler zu sein. Er lernte beim Pantomimen-Guru Lindsay Kemp sich ebenso unbegabt zu bewegen, wie Kate Bush und David Bowie. Er beschenkte die Welt mit Fotografie und dünnen Lyrik Booklets, hatte aber unbestreitbar ein großes Songwriter-Talent und eine wirklich unverkennbare Stimme.

Wegen seiner Schönheit oft als "Ziggy Stardust"-Abklatsch disqualifiziert, war er eigentlich ein 'New-Romantic' aus der Szene jener, sich grandios selbst überhöhenden Kunstfiguren á la David Sylvian. Musikalisch verwandt mit den "Ultravox" der Midge-Ure-Ära, der Band "Japan" und dem musikalisch omnipotenten "Yellow Magic Orchestra", veröffentlichte er 1980 und 1982 zwei höchst artifizielle, aber gnadenlos grandiose Alben, die trotz Mainstream-Glanz, in wirklich nahezu jeder Hinsicht am Massengeschmack vorbeigingen.

"Ashes And Diamonds" (die Glam-Rock-ige) und "Figures" (die berauschend elektronische LP) waren nur etwas für Spezialisten. Nach diesen beiden gab Griff auch auf und es dauerte einige Jahrzehnte, bis er sich aus seiner neuseeländischen Musikbar mit neuer Musik wieder hinaus traute. Diese mangelnde Medienpräsenz führte natürlich dazu, daß der Künstler nahezu in Vergessenheit geriet und es für Plattenfirmen nicht lukrativ war, die alten Alben neu aufzulegen. Außer in Japan natürlich, wo das Sammeln von musikalischen Schätzen ein Muß ist (dort erschienen dann auch erweiterte "Remasters" zu stolzen Preisen)

Nach bald 35 Jahren aber, gibt es die beiden Alben jetzt auch hierzulande offiziell als "REMASTER"-Doppel-CD, randvoll mit einem ganzen Schwung Bonus Tracks, erweitertem Artwork und Mr. Griffs schriftlichen Betrachtungen jener Phase seines Lebens.

Klanglich allerdings wird der Goldschatz zur Katastrophe. Während "Ashes And Diamonds" recht ordentlich tönt (die hatte auch auf Vinyl den matteren Mix), ist "Figures" hier erneut das 2012er Japan-Remaster von Hayabusa Landings Inc. Und die ist bloß eine Überspielung von LP, ins Schmerzhafte hochgesteuert, mit Plattenspielerfahrgeräusch und "scharfem S". Das ohnehin mit viel zuviel Höhen gemischte Album, das auf Vinyl bereits problematisch klingt, ist solchermaßen aufgemotzt fast unerträglich anzuhören. Die überaus einfallsreich arrangierte Musik kann man nur abgedumpft ertragen, allenfalls über Lautsprecher, nicht über Kopfhörer!

Und da schließt sich der Kreis zu den heutigen Hörern, die diese Musik vielleicht mal aus Versehen streamen. Sie kennen weder die Zeitgeist-Atmosphäre mit ihren chic angezogenen, geschminkten Jungs jener Phase, noch wissen sie etwas über die Entstehung der Musik, die mühevoll mit unwilligen Synthesizern dem musikalischen Kosmos abgerungen werden mußte (heute sind Sequenzer und kostenlose Plug-ins für jeden verfügbar...).

Zaine Griff wird mit seiser Musik im weltweiten Netz, in dem Millionen Songs das lauschwillige Ohr überfordern, ein weiteres Mal überhört werden. Und das hat er definitiv nicht verdient.

Used to see this chap when he was in pop group Screamer and then when in the earlier rock incarnation of Zaine Griff, so the pre-new romantic bonus tracks are a treasure trove for me, although it's quality music and talent will out ! I remember most of the NR songs in their original rock format, but a good song works in any rendering and this album proves it. Specifically for fans of the 80's but also gor lovers of eclectic music everywhere....

Absolutely sublime. Adored him back in the day and a vastly underrated artist. A heady mix of Bowie / Ultravox style/ambience and sublime poetic/storytelling lyrics.
