Digitally remastered and expanded three CD edition. The Sweetest Illusion is the third solo album from Basia. This deluxe edition of The Sweetest Illusion follows the success of Time And Tide and London Warsaw New York, Basia's debut and sophomore albums, respectively. This edition features 42 tracks including the original 11-song album alongside 31 bonus tracks, 13 of which are previously unreleased. Two tracks make their first appearance on CD. The bonus material on this collection features all of the singles, b-sides, remixes, and alternate versions that were released during the promotion of the original album. Additionally, an instrumental version of the original album is featured as part of this deluxe edition. Nearly all of the instrumental mixes have remained unreleased until now. This set comes with a beautifully designed, carefully researched, and spectacularly detailed 24-page full color booklet that contains brand new liner notes, lyrics, photos, an illustrated discography, comprehensive credits, and written contributions from producer Dave Bascombe, plus track annotations from Basia and Danny White.

As with Cherry Pop's previous Basia reissues, the foldout packaging contains full lyrics, new liner notes, recollections from Basia, Danny White, and her team, and a complete period discography.
I don't know if Cherry Pop is going to do a deluxe reissue of BASIA ON BROADWAY, but in addition to any missing live material, it would be nice to have a compatible region-free DVD of the concert (if it was filmed). They could also release a DVD version of Basia's video, A New Day .
Now that Cherry Pop is apparently done with Basia's Sony catalog, I'd like to see them give the same deluxe treatment to the Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine Sony/Epic back catalog, if Gloria and Emilio Estefan approve, of course. Cherry Pop would have a lot of material to choose from - English versions, Spanish versions, 7" and 12" single remixes, instrumentals, the whole nine yards.
Another five-star Basia release.
"The Sweetest Illusion" was the first time real instruments were used throughout the album, rather than continuing the synth pop stylings of the earlier albums "Time and Tide" and "London, Warsaw, New York", both of which have excellent deluxe editions. (I wonder whether there will be deluxe versions of "Butterflies" and "It's that Girl Again"...) The extra polish (no pun intended) gives an extra touch of class and cool, in line with her vocal abilities.
Big shout out for "An Olive Tree", with all its jaunty time signature changes, which puts me in mind of Jobim's extraordinary composition, "Surfboard". Smooth jazz, with detours. Not a new version, just a fantastic piece of music.
The deluxe edition is a triple disc collection, including some desirable tracks which were not included on the original release, such as "Clear Horizon", "Angels Blush", "Go for You" and the excellent cover of "Waters of March". The sleeve notes mention that a Basia album of Jobim covers had been mooted at one point, but this was the only one that got recorded. I would be delighted about a "Basia sings Jobim" project. Who can make that happen?
"Half a Minute" gets an update, which is not unwelcome, although I still prefer the Matt Bianco version with Ronnie Ross on baritone sax, sadly missing here (RIP). "Half a Minute" was Matt Bianco's second hit, which showed that Basia was no mere backing singer, but rather a distinct vocal talent who had clearly eclipsed the band she was in before the album "Whose Side Are You On?" even came out.
Most of the second disc is taken up by instrumental versions of the main album tracks. Not everyone will appreciate this, especially those who are here for the voice, although if there is any justice, these instrumental versions may possibly boost Basia's presence on karaoke catalogues. Basia and long-time collaborator Danny White are superb musicians with a fine sense of detail, so it's interesting to get a chance to hear clearly what is going on behind the voice.
Disc 3 contains six remixes of "Drunk on Love" and four of "Third Time Lucky". None of these improve on the originals and quite a few are pretty poor, trampling all over Basia's lovely jazz chords with very unimaginative alternatives, in many cases pushing her remarkable voice right into the background of the mix. What a travesty! Can't blame Ms. Trzetrzelewska for those missteps. That is what the skip button is for, but there's another way round this problem: I'll tell you right away that Disc 3 wont get much rotation at my place.
Gorgeous packaging, giving plenty of space to the lush art direction, which felt a bit crammed-in to the original release, and interesting (but not overlong) sleeve notes from Basia and Danny make for a very pleasing physical product. Bravo to Cherry Red for getting this aspect perfect.
Essential for Basia completists, of course, but maybe a single disc version with the few original extra tracks tacked on, sans remixes would have been a better value proposition for most fans.
