I used to think I had a favourite television series - now I now beyond any debate that I do. And now we know his Christian name.
As a nation we have sculptured some truly engaging and enduring detective figures and produced for TV some truly excellent series but I think now Endeavour surpasses them all. Pointless to waste time pouring forth my stilted prose - my advice to anyone who has not watched a single episode and has half a desire to be truly entertained, buy the complete series and watch it, and pre-order anything new as soon as you can. I hope nothing prevents Endeavour running for years and years until he is finally forced to take that step forward into the past and morph into Morse - sad to say how dated and flat he looks set against his younger self.......
The characterisation of all the main players, not least Morse himself, is superb and they will become good eagerly anticipated friends - Thursday, Bright, Strange, in fact there is no-one weak or wooden. As a backward glance to the 60's the episodes are both authentic and real capturing another age, and not without provoking a mild sense of nostalgia. Of course one or two stories are not quite as good as their siblings but to maintain a consistency in quality that the makers achieve is, I would say, a very rare achievement. I found myself rationing my viewing knowing that an end would come all too soon but anticipating sitting down to watch another episode produced a very rare sense of excitement and warm familiarity. Don't feel motivated to watch anything having just turned off the last of Series 5. Going to have to order some seriously absorbing books from Amazon until Series 6 is ready.........
