2017 release, the fifth studio album from the alt-rock band. In contrast to 2012's Port of Morrow, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and was nominated for a Best Alternative Album Grammy, Heartworms ushers in a return to the handmade. Heartworms is, as always, entirely written by James Mercer, with exception of "So Now What" (produced by band member Richard Swift). Heartworms is the first Shins album to be self-produced by Mercer since Oh, Inverted World in 2001. Heartworms features Mercer's most diverse lyrical palette to date. The result is a cohesive, yet genre defying album marked by Mercer's distinct voice and melodic composition. Unified by his singular vision, Mercer creates a sound that is both familiar a nostalgic nod to the album's predecessors - and distinctly new. The album's first single, "Name For You," is a resounding call for female empowerment inspired by Mercer's three daughters.

Posiblemente los detalles solo ocurren en alguna que otra copia, me toco que en mi copia tiene algunas rayitas que provocan un poco de ruido superficial en un par de canciones y alrededor de 5 o 6 pops bien audibles separados en alrededor de 5 canciones. El masterizado es altamente bueno pero un poco inconsistente porque creo que sobre todo para la última pista del lado A y tal vez un poco la última pista del lado B me parece que traen un poco de inner groove distortion ya que sí tienen poca longitud de deadwax.

La edición es buena en cuanto a su material de 180gr aunque es algo austera ya que no es gatefold y pues incluye una funda interna de cartoncillo delgado impresa con las letras de las canciones al estilo del arte del album (posiblemente la aspereza de esta funda talle un poco el disco) y una descarga digital aunque en mp3, no lossless como pienso yo sería lo ideal.

Si no has escuchado a esta banda creo que sí podría sugerirte que empieces por este album, ya que manejan un sonido actual sin dejar de ser un tanto experimental y con raíces de rock que me da la impresión son sus fuertes. La edición la recomiendo apenas si estas consciente de que tal vez traiga algún tallón o rayitas audibles.

James Mercer bzw. The Shins können einfach keinen schlechten Song produzieren. Wie jedes The Shins- und Broken Bells Album finde ich auch dieses hier großartig! Es ist anders als die Vorgänger, trotzdem hört man ganz klar den typischen "The Shins-Sound" heraus. Wie immer kein 08/15 Indie Pop/Rock, sondern einfach außergewöhnliche Musik, bei der man merkt, dass viel Liebe und Herzblut von der Band und ganz speziell von James Mercer in ihr steckt. Klare Kaufempfehlung für jeden Fan und auch für jeden, der auf Musik steht, die einfach mal "anders" und außergewöhnlich ist.

I loved some of their earlier albums, a particular favourite being Chutes Too Narrow. All the songs here are written by James Mercer, but the rest of the band line up has changed completely. His clever songs full of catchy tuneful hooks and refrains still shine through. It took a few listens for some of the songs to lodge themselves in my head, but with repeated plays the quality of the songwriting and playing strengthens. 2nd track Painting a Hole is a bit more discordant and jarring in its instrumentation and may not be to everyone's taste.
One of my favourite tracks is Mildenhall, an autobiographical account of when at age 15 his father was posted to a US Airforce base in Suffolk, and he leaned about music from sharing tapes with friends, enjoyed going to concerts at the Corn Exchange, and started to learn to play his dad's guitar. These were formative times for him where he acknowledges " that's where we get to where we are now". It also has a gentle countryish gait that I find particularly engaging.
Rubber Ballz is one of the most infectious tracks where affectionately he reflects wryly on his fantasy love life with a girl "I just can't get her out of my bed" that has some humorous lyrics. The title track Heartworms reflects on his falling in love with a woman, getting drawn increasingly to her particular ways, and falling deeply in love with her hook line and sinker. Penultimate track So Now What reflects on a loving relationship where "things will not turn out the way you plan" but he is still willing to stick with her through thick and thin.
This is more of a reflective album looking back on earlier formative periods of his life, his love of music and partnership with a woman, that have stayed with him the rest of his life. It hangs together well as a tuneful interesting engaging album, with much to like and admire.
