There is music in metaphors, in the chords of individual perception played upon the patterns of human experience.

本書は、1970年代に開発されたNLP(Neuro-Linguistic Programming)の
オリジナルの開発メンバーの一人であるデイビッド・ゴードンが執筆し
1978年に出版されたメタファーに関する書籍である。

催眠家であるミルトン・エリクソン等が用いたクライアントが自分自身で
リソースを探して問題を解決できる気の効いたメタファーをどう作成すれば良いのか？
主人公や登場人物をどうプロットすれば良いのか？　リソースを探す
道筋をどのように設計すれば良いのか？　非常に懇切丁寧に述べた第一級
の書籍だと思われる。

1978年当時、まだ認知言語学によるメタファーの研究は始まったばかりで
あり、本書では生成文法を用いたシンタックスからの分析が行われている
が内容もかなり真面目につくられており日本語に翻訳されていないの
かが不思議なくらいの良書である。

Recommended by Mike Mandel, this is an excellent introduction to the concept of therapeutic metaphors. Comprehensive and deliciously detailed, this work calls for multiple encounters in order to mine it for all its worth. Reading it once is using a spoon to dig into the side of a mountain where the true treasure lies deep within. You may hear it calling you, yet the message will resonate even more clearly as you listen again and again.
