Saw them live at Blue Note Tokyo. And while they didn't play any of the Mahavishnu material at that time, they presented a brilliant set. This CD surpasses that in energy and presentation. It is totally engaging and well worth listening to if you want the energy of Mahavishnu plus 4th Dimension. On this CD they seem to be able to combine both. Even better than the Jimmy Herring set which is good, but doesn't have the oomph of this.

1曲目のMeeting Of The Spiritsから、マクラフリンの魂の叫びを感じる。
それに呼応したメンバーの鬼気迫る演奏。たまらない。
これだけキャリアを重ねても、全く衰えることのないインスピレーションは凄すぎる。

エレクトリックマイルスやマハヴィシュヌオーケストラでお馴染みのギター神、ジョンマクラフリンが、フォースディメンションを率いて、２０１７年、ロンドンンのジャズクラブ「ロニースコッツ」で行われたライブの模様を収録したアルバムです

メンツは、ＧａｒｙＨｕｓｂａｎｄ（Ｋｅｙ）というお馴染みのメンツに加え、ＲａｎｊｉｔＢａｒｏｔ（Ｄｒ）、ＥｔｔｉｎｎｅＭ‘Ｂａｐｐｅです
正直、ゲーリーハズバンド以外は知りませんが、強力なリズム、そして、ソロを聞かせてくれます

さて、ジョンマクラフリンというと、インドミュージック等々、様々な音楽にチャンレンジしますので、聞くまでは、「いったい、今度は、どんな音楽をするんだろう」とやきもきさせられますが、今回は、皆が、一番、聞きたいであろうＪＡＺＺＲＯＣＫをやってくれています

また、嬉しいのは、ｔｒ１，２、７，８等のマハヴィシュヌ時代の楽曲もプレイしてくれていること
また、ｔｒ２は、「６０回グラミー賞　Ｂｅｓｔ　Ｉｍｐｒｏｖｉｓｅｄ　Ｊａｚｚ　Ｓｏｒｏ」に輝くなど、聞きごたえ十分のギター神のアルバムです

John McLaughlin formed the first Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971 and pioneered a jazz-rock fusion with soul and power. Miles Davis (with the help of McLaughlin) may have been technically the first exponent with Bitch's Brew, but "The Inner Mounting Flame," was in a different category. I was stunned when I first heard it through headphones when I was about 14-years-old.

John has been on the scene ever since (and before) and has explored many musical possibilities. With this offering, John plays about the best jazz-rock fusion available today. He even returns to three Mahavishnu tunes, which is has seldom done since the band disbanded long ago. The Fourth Dimension is comprised of virtuosi, who support John wonderfully and add their own soloing skills. You will not find the energy of the original Mahavishnu, because they are one of a kind and never to be repeated. What you will experience is soaring and challenging music sure to delight any old jazz-rock fusion fan

Some of us are also happy that John McLaughlin no longer exhibits the guru-inspired mysticism that he did in the 1970s. Whatever his worldview is now, all good gifts come from God, and this music is a gift. In fact, John's playing seems more inspired than I have heard in years.

Uno dei piu grandi chitarristi elettrici (e acustici) di sempre ci regala quest'ultimo live al Ronnie Scott: probabilmente quest'anno sarà l'ultimo per McLaughlin per quanto riguarda la sua attività concertistica e quindi il disco ha un sapore particolare: lo si intuisce immediatamente dalla track list: riproposizione di qualche vecchio classico della Mahavishnu Orchestra accostato a qualche brano della sua ultima e recente fase.
Personalmente mi sento di dire che rispetto a diversi album in studio di questi ultimi 10,20 anni, qui ritroviamo il "vero" McLaughlin,ipertecnico, attorniato da grandi musicisti. Troppo spesso infatti negli album in studio di questi ultimi anni (ma a dir il vero dalla fine degli anni '90) si stentava a trovare un McLaughlin in grado di sfornare assoli con quella sua grande tecnica che tutti conosciamo. Per l'occasione però devo dire che in questo live finalmente ritroviamo il "fuoco" e non possiamo che ammirare questo chitarrista ultrasettantenne che non sfigura affatto,nei suoi fraseggi,rispetto alle generazioni dei più giovani. Forse l'unica pecca è che per un'occasione del genere ci sarebbe voluto un bel doppio con una lista di brani più comprensiva di altri suoi periodi spesso sottovalutati: basti pensare alla One Truth Band o eventualmente anche alla band di Heart of Things che per molti versi secondo me è da accomunare a quest'ultima. Comunque,per i fan di questo grandissimo della chitarra,direi che vale la pena sentirlo!!

As an exemplar of musical longevity, this takes some beating. I first saw John McLaughlin in 1972 at the Crystal Palace Bowl, and at the time four of the tracks on this live set from Ronnie Scott’s were still relatively new. I last saw him about three years ago, before some of them were even composed. Although not my largest collection of recordings by a single artist, the one representing McLaughlin covers the longest timeframe, from an early album recorded with John Surman alongside records with Tony Williams’s Lifetime, Miles, Mahavishnu, Shakti, Trio of Doom, 4th Dimension and Five Peace Band.

All nine of the tracks on this new record feature on other records I have, some of them several times, yet successive performances always add something special and fresh. It feels, at one and the same time, like listening to the familiar and the new. The only thing I miss from the earlier music, I have to confess, is Jerry Goodman’s violin, but it’s great to hear old and new together to hear how the two now inform each other, and how McLaughlin overall has evolved over the decades.
