Sean Ong is an author, engineer, entrepreneur, and tech influencer who has written on topics ranging from renewable energy to augmented reality. Sean’s love for virtual and augmented reality began at the age of five when he first tried the View-Master toy. Later, at the age of 14, he coded his first virtual home tour. Sean was among the first people to own a HoloLens, and has developed numerous experiences for the new platform since its release. Sean is President of the Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Association's Seattle Chapter and is well known in tech circles for his informative tutorials and articles that have helped over seven million people. He resides in Seattle, WA with his wife and three kids and enjoys pushing the boundaries of technology.

Pros: Amazing, this is the one book that combines all you need. The hardware, the software, the dependencies. It teaches Unity and Hololens. Other books are only one or the other. I am using this as a text book. This also allows you to develop for the Hololens with or without it

Cons: like any book, the installation and pictures get out of date quick. Microsoft has changed some of the software names and toolkit versions already. However, I was still able to get through the install and made holograms on the computer and with the Hololens device. Not the books fault, more Microsofts fault.

If you want to make a start on Hololens development then this will cover the bare essentials with pointers to other information. It's not really much more than willing you through a few standard tutorials, though, and didn't really cover the lower end mixed reality headsets at all in that all the advice is aimed at the AR style of the more expensive unit.

The book didn't really show me how to use the HoloToolKit as I thought it would. I can save people money by telling you what I learned from the chapters, download the HoloToolKit and examples then look at them. There was only one chapter in the book that actually goes over building an application and even then it doesn't do a whole lot to teach you how to use different parts of the toolkit. I would recommend just downloading the toolkit and following examples there, I've learned more from the examples and following free tutorials online.

A very detailed and thorough intro to developing for the HoloLens. Instead of being a recipe book to follow along to, this book explains the various components found within HoloToolkit (Mixed Reality ToolKit) with insightful text and good diagrams. There are also great tips on user experience.
