"That's All," Bobby Darin's second LP, is his most important record. Darin's reputation as a teen idol was established in 1958 and 1959 with the Top Ten hits "Splish Splash," "Dream Lover," and "Queen of the Hop." Later in 1959, That's All broadened his appeal and secured his immortality. The LP begins with Darin's trademark song, Three Penny Opera's "Mack the Knife" which was number one for an impressive nine weeks. "That's All" won Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Best New Singer. In his first attempt to select more mature material, Darin chose songs like Ira and George Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Porgy and Bess and the Hammerstein song "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise." That's All is an album of pop standards but also includes the Top Ten hit "Beyond the Sea." Much is made of Frank Sinatra's band leader Billy May, but Richard Wess shines on Darin's early LPs. His orchestration in "I'll Remember April" is a brassy and swinging success. That's All might not be a new fan's first Darin purchase. However, it is an important release in the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's career. This LP proves that not every rocker suffers the "sophomore slump." That's All was on the Billboard charts for 52 weeks and peaked at #7.

直いい親父

最大のヒット曲、「マック・ザ・ナイフ」が収録されていて、非常にジャジーなアルバムです！

　映画「ビヨンド・ザ・シー」が2004年に公開され、
　これで、ボビー・ダーリンを初めて知った人も多いのではないでしょうか？！
　しかし、ケヴィン・スペーシーは、よく似ていましたね・・・歌ですよ！・・・。
　ボビー・ダーリンについては、以前、「初恋の並木道」でのレビューで経歴などは記していますので、
　興味のある方はそちらを参照してください！
　さて、「ザッツ・オール」ですが、彼の最大のヒット曲、「マック・ザ・ナイフ」が収録されていて、
　最大のヒットアルバムになっています。
　1：マック・ザ・ナイフ、クルト・ワイルのオペラの曲で、殺人鬼の歌ですが、なぜか大ヒットしたんですね！
　ボビー・ダーリンも非常にジャジーに唄っています。
　2：ビヨンド・ザ・シー、原曲は、シャンソンの「ラ・メール」ですが、
　これをアップ・テンポにアレンジし、ジャズ風に味付けしています。
　ヒットしたのは、やはり原曲がいいということもあるのでしょう。
　3：スルー・ア・ロング・アンド・スリープレス・ナイト、これは歌い方が、プレスリーによく似ています。
　4：朝日のようにさわやかに、いいですね！スイングを利かせて、これは本格的ジャズです。
　5：シー・ニーズ・ミー、一転して、美しいバラードです。
　10：少しラテン調のアレンジですが、これもいいですね！
　12：アップ・テンポで軽快に唄いますが、このスキャットはあまりいとは思いません！
　全体として、非常にジャジーな感じがします。また、アップ・テンポの曲とスローな曲を交互に入れ、
　上手く対比させていて、非常に効果的だと思います。
　もし病弱でなく、長生きしていれば、
　きっとフランク・シナトラの衣鉢を継ぐシンガーになっていただろうと思います。
　残念ですね！！！

朝日のようにさわやかに・・・を追い求めていたら、意外な人物ボビー・ダーリンに出くわしてしまった。そうかあの時代・・歌うかもな・・・と改めて時代を認識した次第。いい曲が詰まっています。オリジナルの時代でなくいい曲を自分の持ち味で表現する時代であったような気がします。マック・ザ・ナイフを筆頭にビヨンド・ザ・シー（これってラ・メールですよね）、他に聞いたような曲が出てきます。一時期美女の名を欲しいままにしたサンドラ・ディーの旦那さんです。生きていたらフランク・シナトラみたいになったような気がします。もっと生きていて欲しかったなあとつくづく思います。

Ｂ・ダーリンを私が知ったのは映画「Beyond the sea 」。ＤＶＤの付いている「Aces back to back!」をまずＣＤ店で買ってみましたが、曲目がどちらかというとＲ＆Ｒタイプの物が多く不満が残りましたが、この「That's all」は良いです。有名な"Mack the knife" "Beyond the sea"はもちろん、２０年代の古いスタンダード曲"Softly …"もとてもカッコよくアップテンポで歌っています。健康や思想的な理由から人生半ばで終ってしまった彼ですが、Ｆ・シナトラに継ぐ大物エンターテナーに成るべき人であったんだと実感させてくれるアルバムです。値段も安いしお奨めです。

Before his untimely death in 1973 Bobby Darin had released 29 albums but none were as important, or as good, as his sophomore release from 1959 just two months before his 22nd birthday. Bobby had established his rock 'n' roll credentials with three top ten hits, "Splish Splash", "Dream Lover" and "Queen Of The Hop". But with "That's All" he demonstrated that his was a talent that could secure him international stardom.

The album kicks off with his signature song and number one hit "Mack The Knife", a version that even Sinatra could not better, and "Beyond The Sea" a swinging arrangement of the Charles Trenet classic, "La Mer". He follows this with ten other classics from The Great American Songbook chosen with care and impeccable taste.

Much credit for the album's acclaim must go to conductor and arranger Richard Wess who demonstrated that he could match Billy May or Nelson Riddle and who went on to work with Connie Francis, Sammy Davis jr and Nat King Cole. His sparkling arrangements of the standards together with Darin's superbly understated deliveries made the album a critical and a commercial success. It secured for Darin a lasting reputation as one of the greats and made him the very first rock 'n' roller to cross over into Standard territory. It also won a Grammy award for album of the year and best new singer.

Make no mistake, this isn't just a great record it's a masterpiece in the history of popular music.

Not so much a review but an attempt to redress the balance for a very negative review on this page that is highly critical of the sound quality. I suspect that the dodgy download has been taken from the Hallmark release of the same name and not this genuine Atlantic release. Hallmark are notorious for their poor quality vinyl to CD transfers and I avoid all of their out of copyright (i.e. recordings over fifty years old), releases as they are unlikely to have been taken from the master tapes. So be warned, do not be fooled by their "original artist, original recordings" hype. Yes they are the originals but they don't bother telling you when they are transferred from vinyl.

Back, to this release. Darin fans will know what to expect - and don't worry, the sound quality is fine.

Hopefully someone in Amazon might read this "review" and remove the negative review from this page and place it where it truly belongs.
