UK three CD set. In May 1978, Todd Rundgren performed a series of concerts at The Roxy Theater in West Hollywood, California with a band comprising members of The Hello People (Bobby Sedita, Larry Tasse, Greg Geddes and Norman Smart) along with keyboard player Moogy Klingman, bassist John Seigler and drummer John Willie Wilcox. This clamshell boxed set includes the entire set from the 23rd May concert over two discs, along with a third disc comprising other soundboard recordings made by Todd during his residence of shows at The Roxy. This release also features an illustrated booklet and is a welcome addition to Esoteric Recordings' Todd Rundgren Archive series.

７８年ロキシーシアターでのライブ記録。

　７８年のライブ盤「バック・トゥ・ザ・バーズ」の完全版と思いきや、そうではなかった。このＢＯＸセットは、１、２枚目が７８年５月２３日全米でラジオ放送されたカリフォルニア、ロキシーシアターのライブ。ウルフマンジャックのＤＪ、スペンサーデイビス、ホール＆オーツ、リック・デリンジャー、スティービー・ニックスのゲスト参加。「バック・トゥ～」と収録がカブっているのは、スぺンサーがハーモニカを吹くカントリーソングとゲスト陣が揃ってコーラスをつける「ハロー・イッツ・ミー」くらいか？「バック・トゥ～」は、７８年ツアーの良いところを集めて編集されているようで、バックもユートピアのメンツが中心なのか演奏に迫力がある。このＢＯＸのライブは、ハローピープルのバック演奏がメインなのか？「バック・トゥ～」に比べるとちょっと物足りない感じがした。とはいえ、７８年４月に発売されたばかりの新作「ハーミット・オブ・ミンクホロウ」からの曲やホール＆オーツをフィーチャーした「サムタイムス・アイ・ドント・ノウ・ホワット・トゥ・フィール」、「シーズ・ゴーン」などが聴けるのが嬉しい。リック・デリンジャーの曲もあるし、最後の「ジャスト・ワン・ビクトリー」まで聴けるのも嬉しい。３枚目は、同じロキシーシアターでの別の日のライブ。「アナザー・サイド・オブ・ロキシー」のタイトルで発売されているもののようである。ユートピアの「ラブ・イズ・ジ・アンサー」、「ヴァーブ・トゥ・ラブ」など若干の違う曲の収録もある。このＢＯＸセット、７８年ロキシーでのライブ記録として貴重だし、トッド・ラングレンのファンなら満足できるものだと思う。「バック・トゥ～」とは、別物のライブとして聴けるところも、「バック・トゥ～」を愛聴しているファンにもお薦めできる。

大先生トッド様は、山下達郎先生と同じく、ライブではサービス精神の権化となって、しもじもに大満足を与えてくれます。しかし、１９７８年のLAのロキシーでこのCDは、アーガイブでなければ、お蔵入りが
正解です。出だしのリアル・マンからトッド様の高音がかなり怪しい状態です。ブレッドのサビのシャウトは聞こえないし、極端な抑揚が少ないキャン・ウィー・スティル・ビー・フレンズでもボーカルが怪しい。７日間連続ライブの最終回と思われますが、本当にラストまで大丈夫かと心配になります。
しかし、この日は助っ人が大勢サポートしてくれているので、実際の観客はそれで、大興奮満足して
いるのではと思います。ラスト前のクッドン・ジャスト・テル・ユーは、本当に危ない状態で
聞いてるこちらがハラハラする始末。ということは、バック・トウー・ザ・バーズは、本当に
お化粧及び編集の極意のLPではなかったかと納得しております。トッド以外のバンドの音も
今回のロキシーはひどくない？？。CD１と２は、散々ですが、やっとCD3で、買ってよかったと自己満足
でした。

FENの放送で聞いていた、ウルフマンジャックの司会で始まるライブ。現在、単身赴任中で満足なオーディオ環境にないため、CDラジカセで聴いているのですが、それがかえっていいのか、という懐かしい感じです。

貴重な音源だが、荒っぽすぎて残念

収録は1978年らしく、名盤「ミンクホロウ」の曲も演奏しているから、リリース後のライブと思われる。

当時の名曲が目白押しだし、ホール＆オーツの「She's gone」も聞きものだ。

しかし歌も演奏も荒っぽい部分が多く、音のバランスが悪い。

歌よりベースが大きくうるさい個所があるし、コーラスも近くなったり遠くなったりする。
我が家のオーディオのせいかと、セッティングを見直したほどだ。

これをライブならではの臨場感と見る向きもあるかもしれないが、
「臨場感＝荒っぽい」ではないはずだ。

かの名曲「Can We Still Be Friends」で音外してどうするのよ.....

というわけで、長年のファンではあるが、星二つしかつけられない。

I saw this collection of songs show up on Amazon Music unlimited, and then disappear for some reason. So, I ended up buying it.
I was at this concert. Drove up from San Diego without a ticket, and bought one from someone outside the Roxy. I will never forget it.
Back to the Bars has many of the night's songs on it, but this is like they took the recording from the night in its entirely. Again, AWESOME.
I actually brought a cassette recorder into the concert and recorded it. I think I still have the tape somewhere. This is much better.

Todd Rundgren est une légende aux Etats-Unis, beaucoup moins connu en France, un artiste complet qui a signé d’excellents albums (A Wizard, A True Star sorti en 1973 par exemple) et de gros succès. En 1978, il part en tournée et se produit au Bottom Line à New York et au Roxy à Hollywood, 2 salles mythiques dans l’histoire du rock. Les concerts dans ces 2 salles ont donné lieu à un double live sorti fin 1978, Back to the bars. Ce coffret de 3 CD comprend l’intégralité du concert au Roxy le 23 mai 1978, dernier de la série à L.A. (CD 2 et 3) dont la particularité est d’avoir été enregistré pour une diffusion à la radio dans tous les Etats-Unis : lors de la diffusion, l’audience a été gigantesque, historique. Il faut dire que Todd s’est entouré d’un groupe d’excellents musiciens et il interprète quelques-uns de ses meilleurs titres : Real Man, Just one victory, It wouldn’t make any difference, Black Maria ou encore 2 de ses chansons les plus connues, incontournables, Can we still be friends et Hello It’s me. Ses reprises sont toujours réussies, on peut en juger par le medley sixties qu’il interprète et qu’il avait enregistré pour A Wizard comprenant I’m so proud/ Ooh Baby Baby/ La La means I love you/ I saw the light. C’est un très bon chanteur doublé d’un mélodiste fantastique. Et surtout, pour l’occasion, il invite quelques ami(e)s à se joindre à la fête et là, ça devient un véritable événement. Pas n’importe qui : Spencer Davis, Rick Derringer (il jouait sur A Wizard), Stevie Nicks qui vient faire les chœurs sur Hello It’s me et Just one victory, Hall & Oates eux-mêmes faisant les chœurs sur 2 morceaux et reprenant leur She’s gone ! Quant au concert, il est présenté par le grand DJ Wolfman Jack, pas mal quand même !!! Le son est parfait. A ce concert a été ajouté un 3e CD qui contient des titres enregistrés au Roxy les soirs précédents, avec un son un tout petit peu en dessous. Un très bon concert qui complète parfaitement Back to the bars.

I was lucky enough to be at this show back in the day. Todd had played several shows at the Roxy over a span of a couple of weeks and as I recall this was the Grand Finale. These were truly great times for Todd fans. The cd captures the excitement of the show which was being heard by millions of listeners via radio broadcast with fun and goofy moments in between songs that only Todd can provide. Wolfman Jack’s introduction of Todd at the beginning of the show prior to Real Man emphasizes the popularity of Todd at the time. The selections of songs he performed is fantastic and I fell in love with Karen Darvin as she danced like a ballerina as Todd performed Can We Still Be Friends. I own a lot of live recordings of Todd and this one is undoubtably his absolute best. A blast to listen to from beginning to end.
