この前、「水五訓」という言葉を聞いた。
黒田如水が述べた言葉だと伝えられている言葉だそうである。
けっこういい言葉だなぁと思う。
「水五訓」
一、自ら活動して他を動かすは水なり
二、常に己れの進路を求めて止まざるは水なり
三、障害に遭ひて激しくその勢いを倍加し得るは水なり
四、自ら潔くして他の汚濁を洗ひ、しかも清濁併せ容るる量あるは水なり
五、洋々として大海を充たし、発しては雲となり雨と変じ、玲瓏たる氷雪と化すも、其性を失はざるは水なり
試みに英訳してみた。

1. It moves itself and others: water.
2. It always continues to seek its own course: water.
3. It can redouble its force strongly when it runs into obstacles: water.
4. It is pure itself and washes other’s impurities, furthermore it can take the bad with the good: water.
5. It fills the wide wide sea, evaporates to the cloud, changes to rain, crystallizes into ice or snow, but it never loses its own nature: water.
