日曜ですが、朝からお仕事。（言語職に週末はありません）
今日はかなりの集中作業になりそうなので、
よし。 甘味を補充しておこうと奮い立ちましたが
遠出する時間がないので、和スイーツのラインナップが程よく充実していて
お気に入りのがある、近くの某コンビニさんまで自転車を走らせました。
ところが。 お気に入りの、が、なかった。
棚に並んでいる甘味製品の大半が見たことのないものだったので
もしかしたらシリーズを入れ替えたのでは… とイヤな予感がしましたが
手ぶらで帰るわけにはいかなかったので、別のものを（渋々）購入して
帰宅しました。 そして お気に入りの、はどうなったのか？
すぐにネットで調べてみたところ、予感的中。 終わっていました。
業態を考えれば、製品の入れ替えがあって当然。でも、
いとも簡単になくなるんだ と思って、切なくなりました。
こういう気持ちになってみると、同じものを脈々と作り続けている老舗や
名店の皆さまの努力は、並大抵のものではないことが
改めて見えてきます。 続けていくこと。 それがいかに難しいかを
思いがけず、こういう場面から見つめる一日になりました。
お気に入りの、があったら、このお皿でいただきたかったです。

It's Sunday, but it's a workday for me from the morning.
(language works have no weekends)
Today's assignment seemed to require lots of concentration, so
I decided to get some sweets. I didn't have much time to spare
for this mission, so I hopped on my bicycle to a nearby
convenience-store where they have so-so wagashi line-up.
Actually, I had a favorite. However, it wasn't there.
Most of the sweets on the shelf were items I haven't seen before,
so I had a bad feeling that maybe they changed the whole line-up...
but I couldn't go home empty-handed, so I (hesitantly) got
something else and went home. I got on the internet to find out
what happened to my favorite and sadly
my premonition has come true. It was discontinued.
That's not surprising considering the nature of the industry,
but even so, I felt sad to see it go away just like that.
And feeling like this made me realize how extraordinary
the efforts of long-established stores and artisanal stores
must be who have been making the same product over years.
To carry on, to continue: that must be so hard to do.
Today's episode gave me an opportunity to think about sustainability.
If I was able to get my favorite sweets, I wanted to enjoy it
on this plate.

原種／AN ANCESTOR
昨日おとずれたバラ園には、原種も多数ありました。
例えば 「ロサ・エグランテリア」 という原種は
日頃見慣れているバラとはだいぶ違っていました。一重、でした。
花びらが優美に重なりあうのがバラ、と思っていたので驚きましたが
原種が出発点となって、新しい品種が生まれてきたことを考えると
納得。 バラの名前を記したボードには
「ヨーロッパ原産・1551年以前に栽培」と書いてあったので
このバラは、460年以上も前の姿を保っていることに。
多くの新種が生まれてくる一方で、原種が消失してしまわないよう
このようにして、保全の努力がなされているんですね。
原型を尊び、後世に伝えていく努力が、お花の世界でもなされている
ことに、静かに感動しました。 原種が育てられているエリアは
「原種の谷」と呼ばれ、バラ園の一番奥のほうにありました。
ほかのエリアにくらべると地味というか、あまりお花がめだたない
青々とした緑地に見えました。次回は、ぜひ、ここを歩いてみたいです。

There were many ancestors at the rose garden I visited yesterday.
For example, an ancestor named "Rosa eglanteria" looked very
different from roses that I see daily. It was single-petaled.
It surprised me because I thought having petals in layers
was almost pre-requisite to roses, but an ancestor is
the starting point for all kinds of new variations, so from that
angle, being single-layered made sense. On a plaque,
there was a mention: "European origin, planted prior to 1551".
So this rose has been keeping its original form for more than
460 years. On one hand new variations are being produced
and on the other, preservation effort is made to sustain
ancestors. I was quietly moved to learn that such effort
to pass on the legacy and roots to the future generation is
also being made in the world of flowers.
The area with ancestor roses were called "Valley of Ancestors"
which was located in the deep end of the rose garden.
Comparing to the other areas, the Valley looked rather quiet
with not so many flowers but lots of green.
I'd like to take a walk in the Valley at my next visit.

バラ園／ROSE GARDEN
バラを見にいきましょう とお誘いいただき、ちょっと遠出して
岐阜県の 花フェスタ記念公園 へ。
素晴らしかったです。 7000品種、３万株。 圧巻でした。
たくさんあってすごかった！ のも事実ですが、それだけではなくて
それぞれのバラの個性が、よく見えました。 最初は
こんなにたくさんあったら何がなんだかわからなくなりそう…
と思ったけれど、フシギなことに、実際にはその逆でした。
いろいろなバラを見られたから、ひとつひとつの個性を味わい深く
心に刻むことができた。
そんな満ち足りた気持ちで、いまこれを書いています。
だから、お気に入りをひとつ選ぶことは、できません。
この気持ちは、どこか大切なところとつながっているように思います。
とてもステキな体験をさせて頂きました。ありがとうございます。

I was invited to go see some roses, so I gladly went out to
the Flower Festival Commemorative Park in Gifu Prefecture.
It was amazing. 7000 species, 30000 roses. So incredible.
Yes, I was blown away by the massive amount, but that's not all,
I was able to find individuality in all those roses.
At first, I thought I'm going to be so lost seeing all these
roses at once, but strangely it was the opposite.
I'm writing this now with a feeling of content that
I was able to enjoy individuality of the roses just because
I encountered so many different kinds of them.
So, I can not select one single favorite.
Maybe this feeling is connected to something important.
It was truly a wonderful experience. Thank you so very much.

大田の沢のカキツバタ／JAPANESE IRIS OF THE MARSH OF OTA
今月、何度もここに書いてきた「大田の沢のカキツバタ」の画像を
まだ５月のうちに。 実際には、もうお花は終わりを迎えていますが
この風景は、いつまでも消えることなく、私の心の中に〜

here this month. I decided to post a photo
while it's still May.
The flowers are actually almost over now,
but this scenery will be alive in my heart forever...

皐月／"SATSUKI (FLOWER OF MAY)"
皐月が咲いています。
旧暦の五月に咲くことから、この名前になっているようなので
そう考えると、少し早いのかも？ でも、うれしいことです。
英名は DWARF AZALEA （小人ツツジ） らしいのですが
どうだろうこの響き、いまの時代にあうのか… と疑問。
SATSUKI のままで、よいのでは？ と思うので
FLOWER OF MAY（五月のお花）と一筆添えて、今日の英題に。

SATSUKI flowers are blooming now.
The name literally means "May" in traditional Japanese language.
This name is given to the flower since it blooms in May of
the lunar calendar, but technically that is about a month away
so maybe we are seeing the flowers a little early?
But that's nice anyway.
The English name for this flower is DWARF AZALEA, but honestly
I'm not so sure if this is a good name in our modern age...
Why not leave it as "SATSUKI" ? The word very well reflects
Japanese culture with elegant resonance, so I'll add a little
subtitle "FLOWER OF MAY" and make it as today's blog title.
