年末が迫ってきました。先週末から大掃除をしようと思っていたのですが、まだ手つかずの状態。一番厄介なのが本の整理です。今年も、たくさんの本を読むことになったのですが、それが実際どれくらい身に付いているのか？どれくらい、自分の智慧として消化できているのか？たくさん、読んだのですが、思ったより身に付いていないのではないだろうか？実は音楽について考えることで、自分の「本の消化の仕方」について問題意識を感じるようになったのです。

私は音楽が大好きです。ジャンルは、ソウルからロック、最近ではジャズもクラシックも聴くようになりました。

４０も半ばすぎにもなったのに、アメリカのiTunes　Storeに行っては、ヒットチャートをチェックしにいっては未だに大人買いをしています。iTunes　Store、ＣＤショップ、レンタルショップなど全部含めると、月に３００曲くらいは、ハードディスクとiPodに追加されいる状態。

先日、音楽好きの友人と久しぶりに会ったのですが、彼がこんなことを言っていました。「大人になって、たくさんの音楽を買い始めると、１曲１曲への思いが、いつのまにか、ドーンっと小さくなっているよなぁ」

そりゃ、月に３００曲も新しい曲があれば、新しい曲だけを聴くにしても、月に何回かしか聞くことはありません。そこで、iTunesで自分がどれくらい買った音楽を聴いているんだろう？と調べてみました。結果は、４回以下の再生回数が５分の４くらい。２回以下の再生回数が３分の２くらい。思いが小さくなるどころか、ほとんど聴いていないという事が判明しました。

好きになりすぎると、消化スタイルが、「音楽を消化（感動したり、音楽で何かを考えたり、いい気分になったり、歌を覚えて鼻歌を歌ったり）するためではなく、集めるためになるのではないか」となっていたのではないかと。「音楽が大好きだ！」と思っていたのだけれど、そんな消費スタイルになっていたとはビックリです。１０回以上の再生回数な曲は、ほんの僅か。

振り返ってみると、私が中学生の時は、アルバムを買う金などなかったから、１枚アルバムを買うと、ホントに１００回近くそのアルバムを聴いていたと思うんです。

それが、レンタルショップが高校あたりから現れて、安く購入できるようになった。そうすると、手元にあるアルバム数（当時は、テープにダビングしていたのですが）が、年単位で言えば、１０倍以上に増えるようになった。そして、よく聴いたアルバムでも、３０回近くしか聴くことはなくなった。

そして、現在。曲単位でみても、たぶん数年間の累計でも最高が５０回の曲がＮＯ１。こんなに軽い消費パターンになっていたんですね。自分でもビックリ。

もちろん、私のような消費スタイルの人が増えれば増えるだけ、音楽業界にとってはいいのかもしれません。音楽に落とす金が増え、市場が広がるのだから・・ある意味、私などは音楽ジャンキーみたいなもんかもしれません。新しい音楽を聴かないと、落ち着かないから、音楽を購入するという音楽ジャンキー。

しかし、音楽の作り手にとっては、「バカにするな」という気持ちになるかもしれませんね。（買ってくれて印税が入るので、それでいいよというミュージシャンもいるかもしれませんが）

では、ユーザーとして自分はどうか？今は、自分が聴いている曲が「何という曲か？」というタイトルさえ浮かびません。アルバムタイトルも。かろうじて分かるのが、アーチスト名くらい。それもiTunesで曲単位で購入したモノに関しては、アーチスト名も分からない。いつ位に出た曲程度を覚えているくらい。友達から、「今、どんな曲を聴いているの？」と聴かれても、即答することができず、iPodを見せて「こんな曲を聴いているんだ」というしかできない状況。

当然、こんな聴き方になっているので、１曲（１枚のアルバム）から得ることができる感動もとても、小さくなっていると思います。学生の頃とは、感性の劣化があるからかもしれませんが、原因は、この聴き方の方が大きい気がします。

大量に消費をしているので、音楽通になったような気がしていたのですが、全然違うんですよね。昔は、彼女から振られて落ち込んだ気分から抜けだし、もう１回チャレンジしようなんていう勇気をもらったり、入試の失敗でドーンと落ち込んだ気持ちから抜け出すキッカケを与えてくれたり、１曲の音楽は、たくさんのモノを与えてくれていました。音楽を消化することで、様々な力を音楽からもらってきたのですが、今は全く、血肉化されていない状態のままの単なる消費・・

これって、音楽だけなのかと考えた場合、本も同じような傾向になっていないのか？大量に読書をしていき、本が毎年増え、年末の大掃除に、いらなくなった本を処分する。数回、読み直した本が何冊あるのか？本を、勉強の為に、ノートにまとめ直したことが何冊あるのか？音楽と同じように、消化せずに、ただ消費していることはないか？学びブームの中、学びのジャンキーになるのでなく、学ぶことを消化していくことが大事ではないか？

大量消費時代になったからこそ、ジャンキーになるのではなく、自分なりの消化スタイルを見直していく必要があるのかもしれませんね。来年は、もっと本を智慧に消化できるようになっていこう！
