ÂêÌÜ¡§Influential factors on the production of English /¦È/ by Japanese learners

This preliminary study is intended to investigate the linguistic and sociolinguistic

factors which trigger high frequency of /s/-substitution (i.e. the substitution of /s/ for /¦È/)

by Japanese-speaking learners of English. Although there exist several studies on

perception of English /¦È/ by Japanese learners, those on production are scarce.

Here I show that the production of /¦È/ by Japanese varied according to the various

kinds of influential factors, both concerning linguistic and sociolinguistic variables.

The results and the continuance of this preliminary study might be able to be applied to

pedagogical strategies to help Japanese learners overcome their pronunciation difficulties.

ÂêÌÜ¡§Codeswitching for different functions among bilingual children

ȯɽ¸À¸ì¡§±Ñ¸ì

This study describes the strategic use of two codes (or languages) by

six Japanese-English bilingual children aged 5;0 to 7;11 in their storytelling

activities in Japanese and English. Based on their speech data from my

fieldwork in Hawaii, this study attempts to see how children¡Çs codeswitching

is displayed in the use and shifts of alignments in their narratives

by using interactional sociolinguistics and conversation analytical tools.

The research questions are (1) how the bilingual children use switches

between languages for various functions and (2) how the Japanese/English

language choices help to frame the activities that the bilingual children

are engaged in. The results show that these children use switches

between codes for various functions, not singular functions.

Children select their languages for various communicative functions

when they create social relations in their narratives as they go into

the story and interact with their peers. Children's codeswitching

has purposes and functions when they are on-and off-task,

providing them with a flexible bilingual communicative strategy.
