Dale Farm is a travellers site/encampment in Essex, UK (England).
Travellers are Gypsy, Roma, a tribe of nomads. They use mobile homes/caravans for living.
Dale Farm was a scrap yard from the 1960s to 1990s.
Then the land was sold to the travellers. They own the land.
But after 2000, the county council stopped to give planning permissions.
Before of that, they even encounraged travellers to buy the land.
Since 2005 the council has sought eviction of so called "plots".
There are some legal plots with residence permission, but more travellers
moved in. Altogether about 1000 people live there.
In the past few days eviction was enforced by appointing bailiffs (private security),
and police forces. There is press coverage all over the UK by major newspapers.
Costs are about £18 million. Damage of reputation both for the county council and the UK
might be much higher.
Actually these people do not have alternative place to go.
And they even own the land legally. However, about half of the plots do
not have permission for residential use. And it is unlikely they will ever get it!

Basildon Council votes to go ahead with the eviction. The Conservative-run authority is backed by Prime Minister David Cameron, who says it is an illegal development and "those people should move away".
