バンクーバー五輪開会式でk.d.ラングが歌ったレナード・コーエン『ハレルヤ』
今日から始まったバンクーバーオリンピック。その開会式の生中継をテレビで観ていた。全体としては、質実さ、素朴さ、誠実さみたいなもの（？）が印象に残る内容と感じた。が、これは主催国側が国威発揚を強く意識したはずの、（しかもリーマンショック直前という時期にあった）2008年北京五輪のときと比べて、ややそう思えたということかもしれない。
こちらが登場を期待していた音楽アーティスト--マイケル・ブーブレ、セリーヌ・ディオン、デビッド・フォスターらはいずれも出番がなかったけれども、少なくとも地元っ子のマイケル・ブーブレ（"MB"）に聖火リレーしか声がかからない、というのはどう考えても腑に落ちない。そういえば、たしかトリノ五輪の時もリッキー・マーティンが出てきて大いに場を盛り上げたのは閉会式のほうだった。そこから類推して、MBの出番はきっと閉会式のほうになったんだな、と勝手に想像して、いましばらく期待をつなぐことにした。
さて。開会式のセレモニーでは、期待の顔ぶれは拝めなかったものの、それを補うだけの収穫もあった。なかでもとくに感動したパフォーマンスは2つ。ひとつはジョニ・ミッチェル作『青春の光と影』（"Both Sides Now"）のカバー曲がバックで流れる中、少年が会場中の宙を舞うところ（少年が進むのにあわせて足下の光景が風に揺れる黄金色の草原に変わっていくのが、私のなかで視覚には捉えられない心地よいものを想起させた）。そして、もうひとつは、k. d. ラング（k. d. lang）が歌ったレナード・コーエン（Leonard Cohen）作の「ハレルヤ」（"Hallelujah"）。

この『ハレルヤ』という曲、実は今週5日間にわたってNHK BSで放送されていたBBC製作のドキュメンタリー＜シリーズ 合唱団（クワイア）を作ろう＞の「響け 町の歌声 第2回 コロシアムで心をひとつに」を観ていて知った。わざわざ英国の合唱団までが採りあげるくらいなのだから、よく知られた名曲なんだろうなぁくらいの想像はその時働いたが、まさか世界が注目する国を挙げての式典で歌われるほどの曲だったとは・・・

・・・というか、観る者を感動させるにしても、まさに「これからスポーツの祭典が始まるぞ！」という開会式用に、こういう聴く人をどことなく内省的な気持ちにさせる歌詞とメロディを持つ曲--それは『ハレルヤ』だけでなく『青春の光と影』についてもいえる--を選んでくる、そのミスマッチ加減がとても興味深く、どうしてそうなったのかと後々まで気になり続けそうな予感がする。
いずれにしても、この「ハレルヤ」、名曲であることに間違いはない。
