翻訳でよく見られるものに「例示のmay」というものがあります。
しかし、実際にはmayしか使われないわけではなく、程度の差はあれ、ほぼすべての推量の助動詞が使われるようです。
では、なぜ、このような推量の助動詞が使用されるのでしょうか。
これは具体例が実際に起こりうる可能性を述べています。

翻訳の際、これらの推量の助動詞を訳すると、不自然な日本語になることがあります。その場合、単に「〜する」、「〜である」など、平叙文で訳すと自然になります。
