The man behind the beat
It’s a name you might not recognise – but you’ll certainly know his music…James Dewitt Yancey, Jay Dee or more commonly known as J Dilla, is one of Hip-Hop’s most influential producers and artists, but his genius was cut short at 32 after battling the incurable blood disease; lupus.
Jay was one of my favorite Hip-Hop producers of all time. His passion for music was a rare thing amongst people in the music industry. His music and presence will be sorely missed for many years to come.
There are way too many reasons why he is my favorite producer and that’s saying a lot because I have a mean line up of producers that have changed my life. But if you know me well, you’ll know that J Dilla taught me a lot about myself through his music. I still relax my mind to his tracks and let my thoughts wonder about, as ideas after great ideas flow until I’m done and after then I can think again. He’s only a play button away. Not a lot of people know about all his contributions to the Hip-Hop landscape. There is a depth and honesty in his music, in the way his beats melt together.
His music is full of subtle things that most people aren’t aware of – and they shouldn’t have to be. People should just enjoy it.
The normal Hip-Hop loop will be a strict four-bar pattern, but I don’t think Dilla was ever trying to be unsettling or overly technical. He just loved the effect music could have on himself and others. As listeners, we’re not supposed to notice those things. Dilla was purely about expression and he was trying to say that life is beautiful. We are lucky to be able to live it, we need to go after whatever it is that is in our hearts.
Take care brother, I wish you were here to enjoy it with your friends and family. Or maybe you can still see and hear us now wherever you are as we are with you in spirit today and for many days and years to come!

The Beat of Urban Art
This book is pretty cool. It mixes elements of street art, caricatures, music and city life. In The Beat of Urban Art, Justin Bua recollects how he grew up in New York on the Upper West Side, Manhattan and Brooklyn.
He sketches the people he met and the streets he grew up on. The pages are filled with caricatures of people who grew up in this tough neighbourhood. Life was so rough on the streets he sometimes had to act insane just to avoid getting mugged, and that was in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
It's easy to get absorbed looking at the interesting caricatures but not to be missed is the inconspicuous background art which serves as a great story backdrop. There's a very textural and grainy look to the art. After reading through his experiences, it's hard to imagine any other style more apt. He names his style of art Distorted Urban Realism.
His coloured paintings, musical influence and artistic expression goes to the second part of the book.
It's a nice art book to have if you're into stylised art. There are hardcover and paperback editions.
