題目： Direct electron transfer for efficient coupling of microbial metabolism

要旨： Microbes often grow in contact with other microbes, but it is unknown how the particular arrangement of cells in an ecosystem is related to biological activity. I will present some new analytical tools for understanding some of the consequences of cell-cell contacts, and also present data which suggests a new way of direct electron transfer between two different species. The process seems to be mediated by a surface layer of protein which contains bound heme (an iron co-factor) groups. This mode of interaction seems to be a more efficient path to couple metabolism than the exchange of a diffusible compound, since electrons are faster and only diffuse easily along conductors.
