題目: Direct electron transfer for efficient coupling of microbial metabolism

要旨: Microbes often grow in contact with other microbes, but it is unknown how the particular arrangement of cells in an ecosystem is related to biological activity. I will present some new analytical tools for understanding some of the consequences of cell-cell contacts, and also present data which suggests a new way of direct electron transfer between two different species. The process seems to be mediated by a surface layer of protein which contains bound heme (an iron co-factor) groups. This mode of interaction seems to be a more efficient path to couple metabolism than the exchange of a diffusible compound, since electrons are faster and only diffuse easily along conductors.
