70年代、ボウイは既に12曲のトップ10ヒットと1曲のNo.1ヒット、10枚のトップ10アルバムと3枚のNo.1アルバムの記録を持つトップスターだった。

80年代もアルバム「スケアリー・モンスターズ」、シングル「アッシェズ・トゥ・アッシェズ」がともにNo.1と、順調な活動を続ける。
アルバム・チャートの記録を見てもわかるように、81年から83年にかけて旧作の再発盤や編集盤も軒並みロングセラーを記録するなど、絶好調だった。

好調さにさらに火をつけたのが、83年の「レッツ・ダンス」の世界的ヒットだった。

映画「戦場のメリー・クリスマス」での好演もあり、全世界的にスーパースターとしての地位を確立した。

その後、徐々にセールスは下降線をたどるが、少なくとも英国チャートにおいてはそこそこのヒットを記録し続けており、85年のライヴ・エイドでのミック・ジャガーとの共演、86年の映画「アブソルート・ビギナーズ」、「ラビリンス」への出演と楽曲提供など話題に事欠かなかった。

それでも87年の「ネヴァー・レット・ミー・ダウン」では低調さを感じたのか、その後ティン・マシーンを結成し、バンドの一員として活動するという道を選び、90年代を迎える。
