フィリピンのパラワン島*1のプエルト・プリンセサ市*2に住む或る漁師が昨年沖合で自らの船の碇を巨大な貝に引っかけた。引き揚げてみると、貝の中から巨大な真珠が出てきた。重さ34kg。彼はその巨大真珠を「幸運のお守り」としてそのまま放置していたが、引っ越すこととなり、プエルト・プリンセサ市観光局に勤務しているオバに真珠を預けた。彼女は市長に真珠を見せ、真珠は新たな観光アトラクションとして市観光局のオフィスに展示されることになった。
パラワン州では（殻を含めて）24.7キロの真珠が見つかっている（Catherine Santos）。また、1939年には6.4kgの真珠が引き揚げられている（Elle Hunt）。
真珠というと小粒というイメージがあるけれど、それは小さな貝だからであり、大きな貝はそれに見合った大きさの真珠を生成する可能性があるわけだ。
