エリザベス２世の従弟であるアイヴァー・マウントバッテン卿*1が『メイル・オン・サンデー』のインタヴューに応答し、自らが「ゲイ」であることをカミングアウト*2した。自分のセクシュアリティについて長年葛藤してきて、今もすっきり解決しているわけじゃないけれど、新しいボーイフレンドができたことを契機として、カミングアウトすることにしたのだという。 マウントバッテン卿は前妻との間に３女を儲けたが、2011年に離婚している。しかし、既に妻には結婚前に自分が「バイセクシュアル」であることを告白しており、離婚後も定期的な交際を維持している。また、カミングアウトについては、娘たちから励まされたという。
記事のタイトルで「王族（Royal）」という言葉が使われているが、マウントバッテン卿は厳密な意味では「王族」ではない。マウントバッテン家は英国王室にとってはあくまでも姻族である。
